Auto zoom based on distance to waypoint

Excuse Fykantrollet I copy your excellent idea from the old forum to get satisfaction so we can vote for it! (anyway Fykantrollet sounds like a Swedish friend !?) ;-)

Hi!

Changing zoom by speed is a nice feature. But for me when kayaking it is not exactly applicable.

What I would really like is for the zoom level to be set so that it is based on distance to next waypoint or a set number of waypoint ahead. What I mean is that if I select auto zoom to two waypoints ahead, the auto zoom will try to keep these two waypoints visible at all times.

It would also be good to be able to set the maximum zoom level when using this function.

Could be also useful for geocaching when aproaching to the final waypoint.

Zailor, no problem :) Not been so active on the forum lately...

And make that a Norwegian friend ;)

If it is possible to implement this idea, please, I`ve thought about it several times already.

Exactly this is the best option for that:)

Thinking about it, some sort of delay should be considered to avoid switching too much between zooms. I can see that when changing direction might get more waypoints in view for a short while causing zoom changes. So maybe a 30 second delay before switching to the correct zoom level.

Or maybe add some special button which will be zooming out for a while to see the whole situation, and then the zoom will get back to the original zoom level, after the user will release the special button ( or after a few seconds )

Good suggestion, but my problem is that I can not use the screen when the waterproof bag gets wet. So some automatic function would help me.

Hi!

If this idea is not to be implemented, would it be possible to have the speeds for auto zoom (already implemented) user configurable? With profiles if possible? I think most users of the app use it fo walking/geocaching, cycling or kayaking or some other sport. Which means speeds of 120+ km/h are rarely achieved ;)

Very good idea ...

Why it is status changed from "Planned" to "Under Consideration"?

I have changed all old ideas from GetSatisfaction that were "Planned" to this "Under consideration". They were "planned" for very long so this work lost it's meaning I think. I have to rethink which ideas are really planned and mark them seriously only in case, they will be done. But right here is a really big chance :)

Hi guys, who will have a time, check please latest BETA version. There is completely new auto-zoom feature and also this task should be implemented!

Idea is, to make most things automatic. So "autozoom based on distance to waypoints" starts work when you're closer then 2000 m to waypoint. Till then works normal autozoom. Try it and you'll see what I mean ;)

Is the BETA open for everyone? How do I get hold of it?

Thank You! It worked pretty fine. Maybe current position could be a little closer to the edge of the screen. I would also like to be able to configure the cutoff to something else than 2000m.

Hmm glad to hear it, thanks for testing.

Distance between your location and edge of screen is there, because in case distance to waypoint is drawn on opposite side then is real direction to waypoint (so closer to edge), space to edge is right enough. Also in case you are (your location) closer to top, bottom or right edgem where should be visible panel with buttons ...

About distance - value 2000 is really experimental. I'll gladly hear suggestions for "better" value. Best for me should be found optimal value for all cases. If this won't be possible, I'll make it configurable

Ok, I now understand the extra space.

I have scenarios where I would like it to be infinity, or at least half the earth circumference :-) If I'm travelling but not navigating, for example on public transport or in a car driven by someone else, I would like to have an overview of the map with both my location and destination shown.

So after three months of usage, I do not get any serious negative response, so I'm glad it's possible to close this task as "Completed".

If anyone will have any ideas for improvements around this feature, feel free to create a new topic (idea) for extra voting for people interested in such feature.

Is this feature mentioned in the online manual? All I can find is auto-zoom based on current speed, NOT distance to waypoint.

Hello Andrew,

I can forward this to Michal who wrote manual, but what is it really important? Zoom based on distance is applied only in case, you are closer to single point you guide to. Then Locus switch from auto-zoom based on speed to zoom based on distance. You miss this in manual? Well, you are probably correct :). Michal? Thanks
