Not a Problem

I've used locus across many HTC devices but my on my new m8 I'm getting no hardware compass functionality (rotate map doesn't do anything) . Seeing same issue in GPS essentials which I've used for years also. compass by gabenative works fine

Good day Antony,

fact that compass do not work for you also in different application, should mean there is something wrong in your device.

Anyway as I think about it, I suggest to check

1. "Use hardware compass" - enabled ( http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:settings:sensors )

2. compass calibrated - to do it, just wave it few times in air

3. also suggest to check directly Maps applicion from Google as another confirmation that problem is/or isn't in your device.

Thanks, I've actually raised a ticket with HTC. I returned the m8 and got a new one..compass needed calibration frequently with the new one until I accepted the 4.4.3 ota update at which point the compass stopped working altogether...same as the original unit. I think theres a problem with the HTC one m8 and/or android 4.4.3

Hmm interesting.

Just yesterday one guy mentioned similar issue with HTC One M8. He told that his HTC device has some "battery saving mode". When he disabled it, it works as expected. Don't know what he talk about exactly as I don't own any HTC device, but maybe it may helps you.

cheers...i have battery saving off also. it's odd tho as when you open googlemaps, the compass rotates ok for a few seconds before locking up...swtiching apps and back to maps starts working again for a few seconds before locking up again. Can't believe I'm the only one with this problem when i've had the same issue on two different M8's especially as last night it happened immediately after the OTA update...oh well...see what HTC have to say I guess

It's not a locus issue tho, I should add...love the app !

Same issue, same phone. I'm in South Africa. The compass works (badly) for a few seconds and then locks up. I must have tested it with a dozen apps already and tried calibrating it countless times. It just doesn't work.

I've been looking at the specs of the M8, turns out it does not have a magnetic compass sensor, but rather has compass function via a-gps or Assisted GPS, which uses GPS along with cellular data. GPS signals won't be well received indoors, so likely the compass function won't work indoors either since it isn't a true compass.

I wonder why the newer phones aren't being provided with an actual compass?

not sure about that...it has a digital compass..which incidently now works since the 4.4.4 OTA Update. HTC confirmed it was a firmware problem in the version it shipped with 4.4.3.

Confirmed. I did the 4.4.4 update last night and the compass works as normal.
