Locus Pro with maps on external SD Card under Android 5

Hello,

I still use Locus Pro with Android 4.1 – without any problems. I really like this App very much and I use it with many different maps on my external SD Card. Now I want to buy a new Smartphone and of course I want to use Locus Pro with the maps on external SD Card.

As far as I know it is not possible to use maps on external SD-Card with Android 4.4. But now

there is a new Android 5. Can you tell me if I can use Locus Pro with maps on external SD Card now again with Android 5 or is there still the problem which appeared with Android 4.4.?

Thank you.

Kind Regards

Good day Marcus,

problems in Android 4.4 are caused by permanent change in Android system, not by some issue in Locus. And this change remain same in new Android 5.0 and probably also it's future updates. So limitation with access to SD card remains same.

Thank you for the (bad) answer...

Is there any good and reasonable possibility to use Locus Pro with new Android System without rooting the Smartphone?

Hi there,

I use a Samsung Galaxy S5 and got Android 5.0 today.

I've heared that with 5.0 Google allowes Apps to write to the "external SD Card" when the user agrees. It is said, when an app first time wants to write to the sd card it can ask the user if he allowes. If he does, the app will get able to write even to whole directory-paths.

I am looking forward to dooing this. How could I configure this in the actual Locus Pro?

Thanx a lot!

Hello gernangeo,

I'm well aware of this option. Anyway you cannot enable it as a user, it has to be integrated on developers site.

Hello Menion,

Yes , of course, I am aware of that it is a developers problem.

That's why I would like to kindly ask you, if you are already focusing a solution and maybe we 5.0 users can hope for getting it in your next release?

That would be really great!

Thank you for your work , that brings a lot of joy to us users!

Ah, fine. I was reacting mainly on your sentence "How could I configure this in the actual Locus Pro" ...

Anyway it won't be in next release and I also do not work this yet. It's not core problem for now and also amount of Android L users isn't too much. Anyway as I wrote, I'm aware of this possibility and I'll look on it deeply during next weeks for sure.

Cool that you're going to look at it more deeply in the next weeks :-)

I think the circle of 5.0 users will be growing and the circle of users wanting to put their locus-path to the SD Card is already huge today.

I read about the workaround for putting the big .map (as Germany.map) files to the SD card and will try to do this sidestep until the above mentioned solution comes.

I've just updated to Lollipop and was looking for moving my maps to the SD card. I guess I'll have to wait for a while. Hope this comes soon :)

You Do not have to wait at all! Just Use the workaround I have linked above and you can use Map files that are at the sd card. But you have to move them there by your PC.

I'm sorry, I've messed up when I was talking about maps only. I had in mind the same thing as you did, with Locus being able to get the write permission under Android 5 so that other data could be stored on the external SD with and the whole business with map be smoother. I've put it to vote

http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/allow-maps-on-external-sd-android-5

(with the same mistake - focusing it on maps only. I don't know what I was thinking...)

just to make this topic complete... Android 5 did bring more options for apps to write on SD card but unfortunately not in the same range as it used to be before 4.4.2. As we wrote here, here and here, only backup, SRTM and vector maps directories can be placed on SD card.

I.e. not even custom SQliteDB maps by MOBAC, that would not be modified ? Just in case I am buying the phone in future.

My friend downgraded recently bought phone to A4.3 because of Locus.

Edit: Hm, perhaps even not them , if auxiliary SQLite files are to be created there. Damned.

I wrote about working directories, i.e. those where Locus has to write into. Custom SQLite maps from external sources like MOBAC can, of course, be stored on SD card and added in Locus as "external" maps. Even those SQLite maps created by Locus can be moved to SD card but added as externals then without option to be modified by the app.
