Samsung Photos always disoriented

Ron Carmichael shared this question 8 years ago
Answered

During the recording of a track in Locus Pro, I create numerous points using photographs (add new point photo). The images are never correct - the photos are upside down when the phone is upright, or 180 degrees awry if the camera is sideways.

Is this unusual, or consistent for all Samsung phones? I am using the Note 3, running Lollipop, on the Sprint network in the U.S.

Other than exporting to something like Geosetter, and editing it there, is there a way within Locus to rotate the image to proper?

Good day Ron,

if you photo took by Locus display in any external application, it display correctly? You also wrote, that you see photos upside down - only in Locus in "attachment" tab?

Also you may attach one photo that is incorrectly rotated in Locus and I'll check it.

Last question - you are using official application for photos or any alternative?

I think what you are asking is, if I use a different program, such as Irfan View, do the photos automatically right themselves when I view them after taking them in Locus Pro? No, they are still sideways, upside down, etc. The KMZ exported from Locus Pro to my dropbox which has the photos, is at

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ghusgunu7xzrg7w/june6finaldraft.zip?dl=0

(I renamed it to a zip so I could drop a new icon png file in it).

The KPX track that was exported separately is at

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hdd6ywly3fdkoxt/june6finaldraft.gpx?dl=0

The photo I attached was taken with the phone in the upright, portrait mode, position. As you can see it is on it's side when displayed by Irvan View or Windows Preview. When a photo is taken with the camera horizontal, in landscape mode, Locus displays it upside down when asking if it should be saved or discarded. When I get it to the computer, Irfan View is displaying it proper orientation.

Interestingly, I am careful to type in a name, title, and description for each photograph as I take them, but they are not written to the file header, so I must type them in again in Geosetter before making a KMZ file that I can give to each archer as a "map" for them to follow in a field archery tournament.

Many thanks, by the way.

Ron, I'm not sure I may help here.

Locus do not modify any orientation or other parameters in EXIF files, except coordinates. So if camera write wrong data to EXIF, it is not a Locus problem and in this case, I suggest to try different application.

I'm trying to display attached photo and seems that it has defined "orientation" parameter to "1", so image do not rotate at all. And i think, this has nothing to do with Locus.

Funny thing - I had a couple of photos display sideways on the map months ago. No idea what happened but it was months back and hasnt happened again and I assumed I must of had "auto rotate" or somthing turned off on the phone itself causing the camera itself not to rotate for the shot

Have you

got "auto rotate" turned on in your samsung settings? the only thing i can

think of is your camera itself isnt rotating? wierd issue maybe just a "glitch" try rebooting your phone perhaps you never know (and slide x2 fingers down from the top of your phone screen - not 1 finger like you do for your notifications - a menu opens check that auto rotate is enabled)

Just somthing to try I wont be of any further help sorry as it stumped me at the time too, and just seemed to start working properly all on its own the next time I used locus lols (so i assumed a phone glitch)

Hi, Daniel, and thanks. I am running Lollipop, and there is not a specific applet speaking to autorotate for photos, though there is one for screen, which I always have on. I take *many* photographs, using a variety of apps for my purposes as an elite archery coach, and as an inveterate photographer since the age of 6. (that's embarrassingly more than 5 decades - I had free developing through my dad's Rexall Drug Store's exclusive Kodak dealership until the late 70s...

Anyway, I think my solution is to use Irfan View's excellent ability to rotate the image, AND edit the IPTC data to put in a title, description, etc., which Geosetter was choking on. If I am right, then I can go back/use Geosetter to spin out a good, shareable track with popup thumbnail photos as desired. I'm working on it now, and if I get 'er done, I'll post the example up here, with a how-to. Wolfgang has been incredibly patient and helpful with getting me to this point. Sure like Locus Pro. Just have to make my track with a little magic. :) Oh, and I have always, in every time I've used LP to record tracks (6 or 8 times) had the photos be upside down/wrong orientation since the very first time I used it. Again, I need to install it on my wife's S6 and see if it does the same thing, but I don't have an Apple or other brand android to test it on to see what might be wrong with my technique as opposed to a little buglet in Locus. It's entirely possible there is some *other* setting in droid that is messing things up. Who knows...?

Yeah interesting issue mate. And I wish I could help because it did happen to me once as well (sideways photos in LP) and I have no idea what was going on but it seems to work ok for me since

Maybe my recent photos all show correctly because Im not usually recording a track while taking the photo -

Im actually going kayak fishing in a few minutes so I will do some track recording and try out a couple of shots at the same time and see how I go. Maybe I can confirm your issue on mine as well - Im interested as I have seen the problem myself even though only briefly.

I have a samsung s5 now but its on 4.4.2 kitkat original stock no root. regards the rotation settings I meant - yeah I did mean just the normal "global" phone setting one (just incase - thats what I thought I must have done months ago when i had a couple of issues the same as yours until I saw your post hahahha it just seemed so random for me at the time until now)

I couldnt reproduce the issue my end - dunno whether to be happy its no longer affecting me or sad that I cant confirm it on another device for you lols

Daniel - thanks! I have found a work-around - I was able to use Irfan View to edit the orientation, as well as the information in the header that Geosetter uses to create photo thumbnail popups for POIs. :)

If you load an image in IV, then hit the letter "i" twice, you are in the IPTC edit dialogue, and for the orientation of the photo, it's easy to just hit L or R to rotate the image, Ctrl-S saves, veeeola!

Good this works. Anyway I still think that it should work even without this extra steps. Works in expected way like for Daniel.

Did you tried to use any alternative camera application in your device, like for example "Camera Zoom FX" or any other ... there is quite a lot of such apps

Menion - yes, I have Coachs Eye, Fast Burst, several others. I have not/do not , have this issue with those applications. The exception is when I record videos on my camera, If I hold camera upright (portrait orientation) the video will be sideways. I can only take videos in landscape orientation. But photos are always displayed normally, as I took them. No big problem now that I work out how to adjust them in the track...

THANKS! Appreciate your time and help.

Oki. I'm not sure if I helped you, but you seems to be satisfied now, so me too :).

I discovered tonite that there is a known problem in lollipop. If your photos are coming out sideways or upside down in Locus, perhaps this will help - it seems to have fixed my Locus photo-disorientation issue:

  • From the home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  • Tap Settings.
  • From the General tab, tap Application manager.
  • Swipe left to the ALL tab.
  • Scroll to and tap the Camera application.
  • Tap Clear cache.
  • Tap Clear data
  • The application cache and data is now cleared.
