Map colored by elevation like UK topo map

I would just love a theme like topo maps on my LoMaps... maybe there is one already?

I do not like mapshading altitude, cause mapshading overlay (lowland blurry greenish) seems to cover everything.

Like the UK picture below, is it possible to come even close with todays settings and possibilities?

a theme can't do it for you.

I agree , probably no way with themes, even if I do like the altitude colouring of OSM Topo for zooms 0-8. It would be nice to have available low-zoom-OSM-Topo-like vector map. :-)

Before using the transparent overlay approach for low zooms, I used fast map switching Vector --> OSM Topo 0-8 as the low zoom ( and fast ) overview.

I do not like the recently implemented altitude colouring, as it often corrupts by a colour cast the information provided by colour of map features. I use only hill shading.

Good Hallgeir,

as gynta mentioned, it is not a question of map themes, as they cannot help here. Theme has influence on items in map, roads, points, areas, but cannot affect coloring by elevation as you need this here.

Solution is to try "elevation coloring" as Libor mentioned. Check http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_settings:misc > Map shading settings > colored elevation. This should partially helps here.

Not sure if I should make a new topic or just a feature request.

Would it be possible to make the elevation color layer hierarchy be between the topo lines and the large polygon objects so that the topiary info and roads markers etc. is displayed unmasked. Also transparency slide and possible color pallette for ranges of elevation.

Good day Brian,

quite complicate task, unfortunately for now not possible to implement.

And there palettes may be freely edited manually in text files. More about it here: http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/altitude-map#comment-27717

I have to admit, I kind of knew this answer. Some time in the future I want to have this type of map on lower zoom levels, because I was really surprised by how much terrain info ...bla bla

Thanks everyone :-)

I am resurrecting this old thread with a related question:

With "Map shading" --> "Colored Elevation" as recommended above, we have to select a theme such as "Lowland", "Highland", "Alps", "Mountains".

Is there a way to set Locus so that it automatically adapts the shading color range to the minimum and maximum elevation which is currently on the screen?

Like on https://de-de.topographic-map.com/

Everytime you scroll the map on that website, the highest elevations on the screen will be colored red, the lowest elevations on the screen will be colored blue.

This is easier to use than manually changing the colored elevation shading preset based on which map area we are currently looking at.

If there is currently no way to use Locus this way, would you consider implementing it?

Kind regards

Andreas

Hello Andreas,

this is a very nice web page and I have absolutely no idea, how to do this like on this web. Compute of elevation values is not so quick and also values are immediately converted to the colors based on the current palette, so this approach means a completely new system ...

Hi Menion, that's unfortunate. Maybe one day a good idea comes to your mind, how to easily implement this in Locus :) Until then, I'll continue using topographic-map.com. Thanks for Locus, it is a great app anyway!

As a bicycle hiker this would be perfection for me. I often run into unnescessary 'roller coaster' elevation that could be avoided by seeing it so clearly :) I believe many people would be attracted by this feature.
