Add waypoint with coordinates from clipboard does not work very smooth/accurate

Wolfgang shared this problem 7 years ago
Solved

Hi,

I very often copy coordinates or a formula from a geocache listing from locus to my text app simplenote. Inside simplenote I calculate and bring the next waypoint to the usual format and copy it to the clipboard. Then I'll insert it to locus as new waypoint. Often it works pretty fine, but also very often it's impossible to get these coordinates accepted by locus. Sometimes there are (not really seen blank or maybe special chars between the numbers) but most of the cases I don't understand why it does not work and I then I give up.

Just have a look at the screenshots.

From GSAK (Windows Computer) I'm used that the string may look like it will there also may be unneeded additional strings in the coordinate field. Always the right numbers are extracted and set. This works like a charm.

Happy day, Wolfgang

Good day Wolfgang,

understand your troubles.

Locus is able to handle many +/- correct formats, but there will be always some specials.

Little "funny" is, that when I insert your values to Locus Map manually, it all three seems to work correctly.

May you please write me exact! steps I should do, to simulate your issues? Thanks. I think there needs to be some more copied then just visible text (some invisible characters), so I would like to simulate this issue on own device to fix it. Thank you.

Hey Menion,

I don't think I would be able to send you a way to simulate it. It's so different once it happens the next time it's fine.

I'm almost sure that there are some not seen characters between.

Wouldn't it be possible to just purge all non usable characters and blanks from the string that is insert from the clipboard? I think this just would eliminate all problems and should not ne a big thing to realize?

I mention blanks because I often realized that sometimes apps and/or keyboards put a blank behind a dot. It also would make it easier to handle if it doesn't matter if we use a dot or a comma. Because some calculators have a comma instead of a dot when you calculate the minutes part of the coordinates.

What do you think?

Happy Day, Wolfgang

Hello,

it is really so unpredictable? You make ten times same operation and everytime, result will be different? I'm surprised, because I would expect results always the same.

Simulation has one huge advantage ... I simulate problem, fix, and also verify if fix is correct! In case you do first step, I cannot do last, this is the reason, why I always force users that reports issues, to describe me steps. And here is it same case. Thanks for understanding.

Yes I know how important it is to simulate a problem. I work with IT too. That was one of the reason I never published this problem because I have it almost since I use locus.

I can't tell you how this happens because it's always different which part I copy from locus to simplenote. The reason is I use my fingers and not a keyboard to mark the needed information. Often I have too much of content, but I don't care it's just temporary. Then I edit the next waypoint in simplenote it's also always different.

And I really cant tell you which special chars I copy because I don't see them ;)

Luckily I was able to restore my recent simplenote from trash which seems to have these problems. When I have a look on my computer on it it seems ok. Probably the app has different content. But I don't have any app to have a deeper look inside the clipboard string.

So I only can send you the source of the problem. Maybe simplenote malforms the string....

Here a link to that note: http://simp.ly/publish/VG6gCv

If you are note able to simulate it, then you have to install the simplenote app and give my you mail address (via PM) then I may share the note inside the app.

Hope that helps.

Good day Wolfgang,

thanks for a note you shared with me. When I copy it's content with device native browser or Chrome, it indeed contains html text, anyway text is correctly removed when adding to edit field.

Did you tried to copy text also from shared web page if this works for you? It looks like your "Simple note" application may cause troubles and incorrectly share note with html code as plain text. Then Locus Map use shared text also as plain text and problem is here.

I'll try to add a tiny improvement into next version. Not sure if this helps, but we may try it. In case, troubles will be still there, I'll install mentioned application for test. Thanks for now.

Hi Menion,

thanks for the feedback.

Yes when I use the share link via Web there is no problem and it works fine here too. Tested it once again directly from the app and the problem is still there.

If you know any app with which one I can see the real content of the clipboard I may provide you with the real string. I did not yet find any text app that displays everything...

Good evening,

only app that may display what I need is new beta version of Locus Map. It looks like you really wants to fix this. Please try this version and send me a screenshot of "clipboard screen". Thanks (it is Locus Map Free version, so if you don't have LMF installed, no worry).

Hi Menion,

thanks for the beta. Sure I want to get this fixed ;)

I installed the beta on my tablet and got the same behavior. But the clipboard content seems to be fine....

I took a photo, screenshot did not work on tablet ;) Hope that helps you.

By the way - simplenote supports MarkDown but this is not active on my app.

Hello Wolfgang,

thanks for a testing, this is really really interesting.

Look on my screenshot ... I've put exactly same text into clipboard, set also whole device to German (hope I'll be able to put it back) and this is what I see when I tap on "create new point > coordinates > clipboard":

c43d1c6bf0d70b21a26590e942627826

So let's try another version. Please put same text to clipboard again if possible and simply open Locus Map > data manager > add new point over '+" button > icon next to coordinates and tap on clipboard. (or similar method). In that moment, Locus Map should print out some information about own log. Log is stored in Locus/logs directory, so send me it please, thank you.

Ah sorry, in previous post was invalid version that do not generated logs. Here is the correct one: https://nas.asamm.com:443/share.cgi?ssid=0hZbLgp , thank you

Hi Menion,

it has nothing to do with the language. On my usual device I've setup english. Just on my tablet there was the default setup with local language. And it happens on both.

I did your task. The needed part is in the logfile. Don't hesitate to ask for further tests. The next days I'll be very busy maybe it takes some time.

Do there maybe exist different degree sings in UTF-8 ?

What a complicated problem, thanks for a log, it helped!!

Issues seems to be in "non-breakable whitespaces" , that looks like common whitespaces and were not correctly handled by Locus Map.

I'm testing it and seems that issue is finally fixed. Thank you very much and please let me know after you test next public version, if it works for you as expected. Have a nice evening.

Wow that sound's great! Thanks for your support. Looking forward to the next version :D

Looks good with my test data. I tested it once again before and after the recent update. Big Thanks !

Uff I'm really glad to hear it. This one was hard :). I thank you too!

Hi Menion,

I have bad news. On my holiday trip it happened once again. Maybe it's because it was West and not East this time...?

I am still able to reproduce it with that sample data.

Just checked... you seem to use wrong degree symbol, or your keyboard/note-app use wrong character set. Have no idea what this slightly enlarged degree symbol is.

Just my 5 cent

photo

No it's not a wrong degree symbol. The resolution of the Moto X Force is not the highest one - that's the reason why it looks like that. Menion already debugged and fixed it two months ago. It has to do with whitespaces. I guess this time once again....

I understand, and remember reading about this when copying coordinates from webpage.

If you have access to windows computer and type ALT-0176 you get degree symbol... what about ALT-0186? (Hold ALT key and type 0176)

Hi Wolfgang,

are you copied these coordinates from any webpage? So I may try it on own device as well. I think it will be something similar to problem before, exactly as Hallgeir say. Probably it's same looking symbol, but on background it's just different.

photo

I've copied these coords once again from simplenote (app). Last times the easiest debugging was that you gave me a modified beta version of locus which one wrote a log file. This did help you.

I remember our latest test and yes it worked, but it's quite a lot of work for both of us.

May you please simply copy directly in your mobile coordinates from your simplenote app to comment here in this topic? I will then copy them from your comment into my running Locus. This should help, thanks.

photo

Yes that's a pretty good idea which could work. Here is the string:

N 36º 44.351 W 005º 10.086

photo

Thanks perfect.

Exactly as Hallgeir wrote ... invalid character.

Test place for example: https://r12a.github.io/apps/conversion/

Your degree symbol: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/ba/index.htm

Correct degree symbol: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/b0/index.htm

I'll improve this in app itself, so it will always firstly replace this "invalid" character before conversion to coordinates. Thanks!

photo
1

Thanks to you both. I haven't thought that it's a wrong character. Very good Hallgeir!

I don't know if in Spain the degree design is different or maybe just that owner took a different one in his listing. The source was a GC listing.

Thanks once again. Great support. I'll buy in future again some maps - even if I don't need them really. But it's a way I found to support further locus development :)

Hehe, you are welcome. And don't buy maps, rather save your money for something more useful ;). Best you may do to support Locus Map is to report such problems, just to make app better ;). Thanks too

Yes but I complained the most of the time I used Garmin devices (approx 7 devices in over 10 years) about their software. And since I have locus I'm a happy man. That's not only a few Euros worth. You do a very well support and sometimes I want so spend something for that ;)

Thumbs up :D Thanks!

Perfect. I'm looking forward to another weird characters ;)
