App should be usable in Samsung maximum power saving mode

Sometimes I go hiking for a few days with my tent and use Locus Map for orientation. The problem is that I always have to worry about the battery. Therefore, I would like to enable the "maximum power saving mode" of my Samsung Galaxy S8. Unfortunately, this isn't possible because Locus Map isn't available in that mode (although other apps like Google Maps are).

I assume that either the phone comes with a whitelist or that apps could enable themselves with configuration. With rooted phones, it is possible to enable all apps (see https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.xperiacle.upsm.manager) but I do not want to root mine.

Would it be possible for you to get in touch with Samsung and figure out how Locus Map can be used in the maximum power saving mode? I don't see a reason why Google Maps should be the only available maps app in this mode.

Good day Joel,

this is interesting topic. I'm searching and till now I found around 10 topics all about the same ... list can't be simply modified and only way is a root and some app on Google Play.

Only topic around this from developer point of view is here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/39083670/how-do-i-make-my-android-app-appear-in-ultra-power-saving-mode , but no useful answer there.

Interesting topic is here: https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/175427/whatsapp-is-disappeared-in-ultra-power-saving-mode , here is looks like Samsung developers decide on their own, which app may be available in this mode.

I'm sorry, for now it looks there is no option to add own application to be available in this battery saving mode. To be true, if this option should be there, almost every app developer will wants to put own app there. And well ... then battery saving mode won't make sense, right? :).

Thanks for your reply. The battery saving mode is interesting to me because it reduces background work, the energy consumption of the operating and the home screen. As soon as I start using an app, I don't expect any savings. Therefore, I think it's pointless to limit the apps which can be used. Anyway, I personally cannot do anything about it (except for rooting the device). However, I think there is at least a chance that Samsung will add a professional third-party app to the whitelist if the company behind it asks them. Would you mind giving it a try?

I'm checking also some more advanced developers thread about this problematic and

  • there really seems not to be any official method how to include app into this list
  • even a mentioned hacks ( with rooted device) seems not to work on latest Samsung devices ( at least based on comments on Google Play and interesting XDA forum )

I'm sorry, from my point of view it looks like really a lot of work to make this work with unsure result and unsure compatibility to the future. I perfectly understand your problematic which is problem almost to everyone who use device outside. Key is to keep screen off for as long as possible and optionally keep charged power bank in pockets :).

Thank you for understanding!

  • If i go geocaching for 2 hours, i loose 50 % power (with active use of locus incl tracking)
  • If i go geocaching for 2 hours with activated "Flight Mode" (offline), i loose 10-15 % (with same active Locus use)

If i go hiking with tent, i activate flight mode and bring along a solar chargable powerbank.

And agree with family and friends about contact hours... like 12 oclock and/or 20 oclock..

Thats my way, yours could be alot different :-)

Another option as the energy supply are foldable solar panels. Mine has 6W max output and A6-like folded size. Unfolded, it is about 50x20 cm and fits well even a small 20L backpack rear side, being attachable by a thin rope.

Great tip, Libor!

I just bought this

Thanks :-)

Mine is very similar, with 4 plates and 6-7 small fixing rope loops along the sides. It is usually recommended not to charge the device directly, but a power bank instead. As at low light conditions the power may not be sufficient to charge the device under usage.

Hmm interesting. I also had a lot smaller solar panel maybe five years back and in that time it was totally useless.

Do you guys know, how quickly it fill PowerBank with known capacity in summer shiny day? ( maybe some compare to current not so shiny weather in Czech as is now? ). Looks usable anyway, nice tip!

25% use per hour? Clearly it will vary between phone models and battery condition, but 25 is very high; almost unusable. I consistently measure 2.5% per hour with cycle track recording, and 3.5% with recording+navigation. Both with display turned off, of course. I wonder why such a big difference?

@Menion: I had similar experience, also 5 y ago in Uganda, with small solar powerbank, having the panel of size about 4-5*8-10 cm. Useless for serious usage. My folded panel has about 16 times bigger area,so 1 h Sun exposure is like 1.5-2 days with that crap.

I have not tested the panel much yet. I have bought my panel just before my month trip to south Africa in August, but I have not used it much, as electricity was available. It looked like it could on full Sun charge most of powerbanks during the day, comparable to a normal phone charger. Even on relatively low room light it could still charge the powerbank. My guess is, even if cloudy, it should supply the total energy comparable for one phone charge.

There are also more powerful panels, like 13W or 20W, aiming for tablets and notebooks, some with 12V output. But these may be less handy for portable usage mode, like being carried attached to the backpack, or to the bike luggage. I guess they are better for charging at static conditions, like in the morning/evening before/after the trip, or during a break. A friend of mine had some last year to charge the tablet on our bike pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela ( Spain). Folded, it was like 20*25 cm size.

@Andrew: At bad cell signal conditions ( especially if 3G mode is used, but even for 2G ), even a standby phone periodically ( is trying to ) communicates with the cell tower at high power. I remember my old dumb/feature phone Siemens MT50, that got at such conditions its battery drained in some 8-9 hours, being standby.

My measurement of 2.5% is with Airplane/ Flight mode, maximum power saving Stamina mode and every other app where possible turned off except Locus.

Yes, Airplane mode with Sony Stamina is quite a powerful saver. Do you keep Locusmap as exception ?
