LocusPro sees only SD as Read-Only but it is already read & write

LOCUS READ ONLY 128GB SD: I use a Samsung Galaxy S5, Android 6 with a 32GB external SD card (FAT32) for map store for Locus Pro; it has been working well in NZ, Denmark, etc.

HOWEVER, I recently inserted a new 128GB SD card (exFAT) and copied several files and apps to the 128GB external SD card. I have run checks on the 128GB card using an adapter in the PC and all is working. Apps such as MS Word and Excel and all other apps transferred to the 128GB SD are working well, so the 128GB SD card is recognised and is Read & Write. BUT Locus Pro keeps telling me that the external card is “read only” and will not access the Locus Map Directory. In the Locus Pro App (that I have kept in the Mobile internal memory) I successfully changed Locus/Settings/Miscellaneous/Default Directories and have Set “maps/” directory to storeage/0000-0000/Locus because that is where I have copied the Locus maps; the directory is shown as blue (not red). I have restarted mobile phone several times to no affect. I have also set Settings/Maps/Maps/ Maps General-Offline/Personal & LoMAPS/ to Auto-load maps of any type. PLEASE WHAT DO I DO NEXT??

Technical question : Why not just put the plain text ? While it may be better formatted in the docs, it is a big nuisance to all who would eventually want to reply. Note that you did not express the post topic in the Subject at all. ( merged topics, edited by Menion )

Thanks

Hi Peter,

Q1: OS Android, beginning with 4.4.2 version, does not support full read/write permissions for external SD cards. A few things were changed (improved) in 5.0 but still, you can not use SD card root directory for storing raster maps. A detailed article about this can be found here: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:faq:use_sdcard_on_kitkat. Please read it thoroughly, it contains optimized settings how to use Locus with external SD.

Q2: LoMap language can be changed in the particular LoMap detail window. Go to Maps > Offline > Europe >Greece > three dots menu > Information&language > Language >English. In Locus settings > Language&Units, there you change language of the app, not maps.

Dear Michael

Thank you for your reply to my query. I had seen the fix for Android6 but I was and still hesitant to launch into this.

However, I have got LocusPro working again with the 128GB SD (exFAT).

My error: I had the following directory setup that did not work. 128GB/Locus/"Locus, sundry (x Items)"; & "Maps Directory" with maps stored here.

IN STOREAGE

I now have (reading from SamsungGalaxyS5 file manager), the maps as follows:-

128GB storeage/Locus/mapsVector (3 items)/_themes, Europe (6 items), Oceania (3 items)

In Europe I have England, Greece (english), Italy. (I have moved other europe LoMaps to /maps/Archive in 128GBSD).

In oceania I have Australia (15 items, NSW, NT, Qld etc) plus NZ east (2 files)

LocusMapPRO

App Default is in Internal (phone) storeage (confusingly called SD) /Locus (13 items)

LocusMapPro default dir:

I now have Settings/Miscellous/Default Directories/ as follows

  Set "maps/" directory: /storeage/0000-0000 (128GB external)/Locus/mapsVector

  Set "mapsVector" directory: storeage/0000-0000/Locus/mapsVector

  Set "mapItems/" directory: storeage/0000-0000/Locus/mapItems

etc

I note in passing that in the Internal Memory LocusPro has the same/similar sets of files/folders that are in  the 128GB SD in Locus/ incl mapsVector etc; there is one item in mapsVector (internal memory) namely _themes (0 items)

SO NOW TO: OPERATION

Starts: flashes briefly "unable to manipulate with ",/custom" file

Then opens/shows last map opened eg Greece.

Menu/Maps/shows STRANGELY two main ITEMS (caps)

MAPS VECTOR (icon is black folder with L in circle) /storage/0000-0000/Locus (NOTE no sign of subDir mapsVector even though the maps are stored in mapsVector under Europe), shows subset Europe (as coloured icon LLM) with faint England, Greece, Italy) CANNOT CALL UP INDIVIDUAL MAPS, SHOWS ALL 3 MAPS AT ONCE

OCEANIA (icon is black folder with L in circle) /storage/000-000/Locus/mapsVector this has a subDir Australia (icon as map of Aust) para says NSW, NT, Qld etc and pressing leads to choice of map (each with coloured icon LLM). And also New Zealand East (two items, coloured icon LLM)

So we have LocusPro/Menu/Maps shows-

MAPSVECTOR

  /storage/0000-0000/Locus

Europe coloured icon, countries in grey (cannot open individually)

OCEANIA

 /storage/0000-0000/Locus/mapsVector

Australia (icon is map of Aust), choice of NSW, NT, Qld etc ie can open individually

New Zealand East (coloured icon, as for Europe!) can open individually

So I can get things roughly working with the 128GB externalSD but even though all maps are now in the mapsVector Directory, LocusPro is still not seeing Europe properly even though the maps are all in the mapsVector directory. Strange that Oceania works normally but that europe does not??

Any further thoughts please?

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter,

two things cause problems - 1) directory named "Locus" on your external SD card - as is recommended in the manual, don't use directories with the same names on your external drive as in your internal drive - the app gets confused. 2) It's not possible to have /mapItems/ directory nor /maps/ directory directed on external SD card - only folders for vector maps, SRTM data and backup files. All this information is in the manual which I recommended you to read and follow thoroughly. Otherwise you'll experience issues all the time.

Dear Michal

I have looked at the online LocusPro manual and find it hard to use in some ways.

I have been cut and pasting to my own word document but would prefer a .pdf file to download even though I know you are updating continually.

Questions I would think we all need to know are:

OK store LocusPro on phone memory but big maps can be stored on external SD cards.

I have now maps stored as follows:

128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/auto (12 items) (Is this OK here please?)

128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/backup (2 items)/auto (5 items) + 2017-02-12_Locus Maps.zip (I have no idea what these are??)

128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/cache (11 items)/images (16),images-int(336),import(0), map(4), nav_tracks(1),nmea(0),temp(0),track_rec(0),various(1) (again I have no idea what these mean eg images_int?)

128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/custom (0)

128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/data(12)/incl srtm(487) (what are these?)

128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/mapsOnline(3)

128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/mapsVector(4)/_themes(0),europe(12),oceania(3),UK(2)

I have archived offline maps purchased that I am not currently using:-

128GBxSD/DocumentsXSD/zArchiveMaps, this is also where I may keep the LocusPro Manual I am building.

LocusPro is now working well although UK maps insist on being shown as /storage/0000-0000/MapStoreSD and not in europe in mapsVector folder (which is where UK/england is stored) and as all the other maps are happy to do. Indeed I have just bought Spain and it Auto loaded to 128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/mapsVector/europe happily!

Hopeful for your comments

Regards

Hi Peter,

1) manual in PDF - if you know a simple and reliable way how to convert a wiki-based hyper-texted document into a hyper-texted multi-page PDF, please let us know. We've tested several ways (tools, plugins) but without desired effect.

2) "OK store LocusPro on phone memory but big maps can be stored on external SD cards."

- all big maps can be stored on extSD but only vector maps (LoMaps, OpenAndroMaps...) can be downloaded directly there - other maps have to be moved there manually and added to Locus as External maps (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:faq:how_to_maps_sdcard#raster_maps)

3) "128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/auto (12 items) (Is this OK here please?)"

- if this folder is added to Locus as external (see the manual link above) and Locus "sees" the maps, i.e. display them in Maps manager/offline tab, then all is OK.

4) "128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/backup (2 items)/auto (5 items) + 2017-02-12_Locus Maps.zip (I have no idea what these are??)"

- if you have the path to the folder defined in Locus settings/Miscellaneous/Default directories/set 'backup/' directory, it's OK. the 2017-02-12_Locus Maps.zip is probably a backup file. You can tests it by Backup manager > Restore

5) "128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/cache (11 items)/images (16),images-int(336),import(0), map(4), nav_tracks(1),nmea(0),temp(0),track_rec(0),various(1) (again I have no idea what these mean eg images_int?)"

- all this should be left in the inner memory / Locus/ - I recommend to remove it from the extSD.

6) "128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/custom (0)" - remove

7) "128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/data(12)/incl srtm(487) (what are these?)" - /data/directory must remain in /Locus/ directory in the inner memory. Only SRTM folder can be moved to extSD and an appropriate path defined in Locus settings/Miscellaneous/Default directories/set 'srtm/' directory

8) "128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/mapsOnline(3)" - must remain in /Locus/ directory in the inner memory (remove it from extSD)

9) "128GBxSD/MapStoreXSD/mapsVector(4)/_themes(0),europe(12),oceania(3),UK(2)" - absolutely OK

10) "128GBxSD/DocumentsXSD/zArchiveMaps, this is also where I may keep the LocusPro Manual I am building." - you can add this folder to Locus the same way as other external maps

11) "UK maps insist on being shown as /storage/0000-0000/MapStoreSD"

- move them to /storage/0000-0000/MapStoreXSD/mapsVector/Europe/

cheers

Michal

Menion: copy of separate ticket made by email response:

Dear Michal

1. Thank you so much for the detailed response, that I will follow. All is working well.

2. I am copying data from the online manual to a MSWord document .docx. This can be saved as a .pdf.

3. One last question please. I store Points all the time. Where are these kept, which folder please? I could not find any reference to points store in the online manual.

Kind regards

Peter

Hi Peter,

points are "stored" in a database file waypoints.db (Locus/data/database)

There is something amiss.

1. Before your suggested ACTION I had Locus/menu/Maps that showed choice of Europe (with France South, Spain etc as usual), OCEANIA, and MAPSVECTOR (England).

2. Your suggested ACTION I moved England(2 items) to Europe folder.

Now after ACTION, (0000-0000=128GB extSD in Galaxy S5), the Menu/maps has reverted to error-

Locus/menu/Shows only (at top of screen) MAPSVECTOR (sub heading England, France South, Spain etc) storage/0000-0000/MapstoreSD (not working properly, shows Europe as a single map and gives no choice of countries) and (below) OCEANIA (storage/0000-0000/MapStoreSD/mapsVector. Please note the different directories

3. I closed Locus, and put England back into UK directory ie undid your suggestion:-

So now we have (at top of screen)

MAPSVECTOR that contains sub-heading UK (england)/storage/0000-0000/MapStoreSDxSD/mapsVector/europe (spain, france north etc), oceania (NZ aust) and UK (england). Restart Locus/menu/Maps/ now has EUROPE /storeag/0000-0000/MapStoreSD/mapsVector (and this is back to normalshowing individual maps of spain, France north etc), OCEANIA, and  AGAIN please not how locus trates the directories.

  OCEANIA

and  AGAIN please note how locus changes the directories.

Maybe I should leave it at that BUT the error seems to be with Locus deciding that MAPSVECTOR is a country directory, or the UK map is somehow corrupted?

Hi Peter,

it's difficult to help with such complex information from you - maybe there's something amiss as you say. I don't know what it is. I've recommended generally valid source of information about using Locus on ext. SD card and I can't give more focused advice regarding your own personal device and settings.

Dear MichalI store waypoints in

 internal phone/Locus/data/database/

My waypoints have been stored in two waypoint.db files of the same name. I am keeping the old file in a separate folder. Can these files be merged please? Or, how can I transfer the data on old waypoints to the current file?

Hi Peter,

the only way how to merge two point databases is via export/import. 1) export all points from the old dtb, 2) import them to the new.

Merging waypoint file data. Success, I did it like this (you may like to use the procedure):

1. With LocusPro off, Using file manager: go to Phone/Locus/data/database then Move currently used files (a) waypoints.db & b) waypoints.db-journal out of  to another folder say in xSD

2. Move old waypoints folders (c,d) (for points to export from) to phone/locus/data/database

3. Start Locus, go to menu/points/my points/three dots/export, the exported data then sits in phone/Locus/export/My_points.gpx

4. stop Locus, use file manager move Old files (c,d) out to another unused folder anywhere, eg xSD

5. move current files (a,b) back to phone/locus/data/database, Start Locus Pro and import files, use menu/import/three dots/Locus Maps Direct/export/My_points.gpx

6. All done, current files now have all waypoints showing.
