Backup to Dropbox/Google Drive

Jan Pieter Drost shared this idea 10 years ago
Completed

I would like to make a backup directly to a Dropbox/Google Drive folder (in the same way files can be exported). Not only would the backup be safe then, but it would also be easier to copy all data from one device to another (e.g. from phone to tablet)

I support this too :-)

Yes, I'm all in!

... OR are you more in favour of the complex sync/backup solution as proposed here http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/cloud_map_and_data_storage_sync ?

Dropbox or I'd prefer Google disk as Viber and WhatsApp already do (on demand): http://www.thenerdmag.com/backup-restore-viber-chats-using-viber-backup-androidios/

See that 135MB is not a problem for the users.

Locus offers sharing the backup file to Dropbox (and other services) right after creating it.

Thanks, I hadn't noticed that option before. That feature is pretty well hidden, the user has to react within 10 seconds, and last but not least: when restoring data, I still have to copy the backup file from dropbox manually. So I keep hoping this feature will be added to the program.

agree

@Michal

Maybe a short note(sreenshot) are welcome in...http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:tools:backup

I'll add it. I myself voted for this idea but I'm afraid Menion has too many other priorities in queue. And perhaps in some visible future we'll skip this task and start working on this one that would solve it even better.

thats the only right backup, when it is to extern.

What I really miss is to backup maps too!

A backup must always be external

And OneDrive backup also

I also find a backup must always be external. Dropbox is here the best known and best solution.

Hello, I pass this application that I use and it is useful to me (not just for Locus).

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite

It can help them maintain a backup copy of the backups in the cloud or pc.

Greetings.

Hi guys,

I've just uploaded new Beta version on Google Play. In Beta is enabled new option "Upload to cloud" in automatic backup manager. This option is available since Android 5.0+, not for older versions, sorry.

Let me know after some tests, if this works fine for you or now.

For your information: in case of enabled "Upload to cloud", Locus Map will create backup only in case, wi-fi connection is available. In opposite case, it will just sit and wait till you enable wi-fi. it is currently made that local backups will remain and this option for now really only "upload" created backup to cloud, nothing more.

Hope you find this solution useful. In case of any ideas, let me know here.

Hi Menion,

I like this possibility to backup into the cloud. But did you forget the checkbox to disable the notification in the automatic backup configuration?

Good day Wolfgang,

this option was removed. I believe that it was not-necessary settings and that small system notification in toolbar is welcome confirmation, that system works as expected. Thanks for understanding.

Thanks for implementing this, Menion

An option to upload over mobile network would be nice. The backups files are not that big, and sometimes I am not on wifi for weeks on end.

Hello,

perfect, glad it's useful.

I'm not perfectly sure, if current system is ideal.

Main problem here is, that it is whole based on tool offered by Google since Android 5, where as a developer, I only define conditions and backup is then started in moment, all conditions are valid. In this case, condition is time and Wi-fi connection. Problem is that in case, you will be week out of wi-fi, no backup will be done at all. On second side, immediately you get to any wi-fi connection, task will start.

Anyway to your point ... I would really like to stay with wi-fi only system for now, which I expect will be most common use case. Thanks for understanding.

Does this mean no normal local backup either?

photo

Yes.

photo

Hm, it's not so good then. Doing local backups without wifi as normal and then uploading last 3-5 backup files to cloud on wifi would be better, if possible.

Automatic Local backups saved my everything Locus twice to this point. Once in the wild without any connection at all. I think I've even raised my hands to heaven and said "thank you Menion" if I recall correctly :)

Otherwise, wifi only is totally fine. I can always back up manually on mobile connection.

A good feature!

But can you add Yandex.Disk, if possible?

How does this function works? I have set up upload to Google drive but backup is still in local. No any files uploaded on Google drive. Thanks.

Hi Ondrej,

try to remove GDrive association from Locus, and add it back again, including log in.

photo

Dobrý den

Zkusil jsem, ale Locus neudělá zálohu na Google drive. Zalohuje vždy každou nebo až když se shoduje pocet záloh podle nastavení. V tomto případě 5. Diky

Ondrej, please, go on in English as this topic is in English, thanks. The information can be useful also for other users.

As a matter of fact, I don't understand your last note - you write Locus doesn't make a backup to Google Drive and then you write it makes a backup. Could you please better explain? Thanks.

Hello. Sorry for Czech. Any way, Losus makes backup but in local folder on SD Card even i have selected gdrive backup. See attachment. I tried to remove Google acount and do it again as you mentioned but without any succes. Could it be because of -= chars in path? Just inficonu. I can normaly browse in folder in gdrive when i choose folder for backup. Let mě know if you will need more info.

Many thanks.

Hello guys,

please wait with additional discussions to next version. There were a lot of changes since 3.28.1 so reported problems may no longer be valid. Thank you for understanding.

I already install version 3.29.0 and backup still not works.

Backup to cloud is made from two "independent" actions now:

  • local backup: it should be done in required time ( +- 15/30 minutes ) and it's result is always stored in Locus/backup/auto directory, so you may check if new backups are done there
  • upload of backup to cloud: it should happen anywhere in future (usually +15 minutes after local backup) , but only when Wi-fi connection is available!

Still not work even if you know system?

Hello Menion

Now the backup on gdrive works! Anyway i have set up on 00:00 3.2.2018. Today morning i wanted start Locus but when i click on locus icon it falled down. I notice locus icon in notification line with comment "backup files are uploading on cloud". After that I could start Locus normaly. Is it ok? Does it mean that Locus makes backup during first aplication start after preset time/date?

photo
1

Good morning Ondřeji,

what means "falled down"? In case of active action no 1. ( as wrote i my previous post ), Locus really needs to be terminated and cannot be start. Anyway in this case, you should get big popup info with text "Auto-backup is currently running. Locus cannot start now".

When action no 2. starts ( upload to Cloud ), there should be no problem with start of app. Check it next time please and let me know exactly what you see next time if it happen. I'll be watching it more carefully too, thanks.

photo
1

Hello people,

believe that we may close this task and mark it as "done". In next version will be solved hopefully last remaining problem (backup won't happen in the case, app remains running on the background without proper termination). Thanks for help and testing!

Is there a possibility to manua backup to the cloud? I see cloud tabs only in restore or automatic backup.

photo
1

Hello Denis,

this is a good question. Currently this option is not possible and backup is always made to predefined base directory. In case, you wants to depend only on these manual backups, I'm sure it should be possible to define some "sync" app that should automatically supply this task.
