missing AutoBackup Notification while backup is running

Wolfgang shared this problem 6 years ago
Not a Problem

Hi,

when I switch my Smartphone on the autobackup starts, because of my settings, every two days. That's a great feature. When I now want to start locus I get the message as seen on the screenshot.

Shouldn't there be any notification to see that there is a backup currently running?

It would also be great to stop such a backup on the notification bar.

When the backup is uploaded to the cloud there is already a notification. There it also would be great if it could be canceled.

Thanks Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang,

notification of automatic backup appears only in case of a problem or unsuccessful backup. When the app creates and uploads a backup, it can't be started which is exactly the case when the alert you are reporting appears.

Hi Michal,

'only in case of problem' is exactly my problem.

I startup my smartphone with I use with locus. Then in background a backup is made - but I want to start locus. I'm not able because locus makes it backup.

Because I have a large DB in locus I have to wait for some time. So I click and click and click always on the locus icon till once locus is able to start.

If I would see that locus is doing it's backup I could wait till it's ready and then I start locus.

And if I then would have an option to stop the backup it would be much better if I don't want till it's done.

Hi Wolfgang,

do I understand correctly that you switch your smartphone on just before using Locus on it? And otherwise the smartphone is switched off? If it is so then it's understandable that Locus creates its backup immediately after the device is turned on because it is programmed to create backups each two days. I would recommend to set a longer term of creating backups (let's say 5 days) and turn your smartphone on more often, not just before going out with Locus.

Hi Michal,

yes you understood me right. I bought a smartphone only for Locus and Google Maps ;) I have my usual Smartphone (Android) but I don't want to use it for Geocaching.

In some Facebook Groups and from some Friends I heard - oh I can't use Locus I have an iPhone. I asked them where the difference is between buying a new Garmin Device or a dedicated Smartphone. Nobody could it really explain ;)

Coming back to my problem. I know I can extend the backup interval. But let me explain why I like short intervals.

Once my Garmin device in holidays got broken. What a mess if you go in holidays only for Geocaching. Years later I switched to locus I had once a problem with a messed DB - here I was happy to have a local backup but it was not current :(

So I like the automatic backup and I don't want to miss it. Today I'm able to restore it on my "normal" Smartphone in case of a broken device.

The only bad situation is that locus is blocked for some time. Okay I maybe could switch my device earlier on, but I'd like to save battery and so I do it just when I need it.

Wouldn't it be possible to just make a checkbox: Notify while backup or not?

Thanks Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang,

OK, I perfectly understand your point. Nevertheless, I would recommend to switch your "Locus" smartphone on when you're still at home before your trip for a few minutes - with phone charger plugged in and wifi on - you can auto backup to Dropbox or Google Drive which is even better in case your phone gets damaged (not just database).

Originally, Locus informed about any auto backup - running or when there was an issue. Other users, though, asked us to remove the "positive" notification as it was bothering them (0709 has posted the thread here). Therefore, we'll not give it back nor add another item in Locus settings that are too huge now and we struggle to make it less complex and complicated :)

Hi Michal,

that's too bad that it has been changed and has not been optimized.

I think it's not wrong to know what happens in the background. So a progress notification it's an important thing, from my point of view. To get informed that a backup has been running and was OK is really not so important for such an app - but to know that it runs is not wrong.

Sorry for coming back to this. Locus does it not consequent, because when a backup is uploaded to the cloud the next time I switch my device on - then I get a notification. That's good that I get one. I only miss that one while the backup is being created.

Hi Wolfgang,

we've been recently working on a system of backup independent on running of the app so that it wouldn't prevent Locus from starting. That should solve your case as well.

best regards

Michal
