Moving the map in the direction of movement

Frank Pusch shared this idea 5 years ago

If you fix the GPS position in the centre of the map and use the option that the map moves in the direction that you are moving, you might have problems if the way is very twisty.

I had my mobile phone fixed at the handle bar of my mountain bike and motorbike and rode very twisty mountain paths.

Locus maps moved the map always right left right or clockwise so that I had to stop and wait for the programm to get organized again. You can simulate it by holding the mobile in your hand and moving it.

It would be an idea to have a damping function / option so that the map moves very slowly.

It would be much better than to use the app while riding.

Thanks.

Hello Frank,

thanks for an idea. To better understand ... you "simply"want from the rotation of map to react a lot slower on changes in orientation right? Problem is not in some shaking of the map because of the low filter of orientation, but simply rotation caused by the shape of the road you ride along, right?

Hello Menion,

yes, you got it right. I am not writing about problems caused by a weak gps signal or the movement of the app menue, that means landscape / portrait.

When you are not walking but riding faster, you might be forced to stop riding and to check the junctions in the forest while standing. During the ride, there is too much movment in the map.

I guess rotate to point x meter ahead of track (custom setting) would be a better solution because I can't imaging a situation where a slow/damped rotation would be useful because you have to wait even longer for the map orientation after turning into a junction.

But if the map would show your arrow and keeps oriented ahead on track you would get your orientation correct before your turn into a junction get complete.

Current position button centre of the display, and next point 1000m ahead of track: top centre of the display.

Here is an example how rotate to point ahead of track would look like:

44043d6693446e9dc240da80f0507a7d

and that is the current GPS rotation where you can't see anything if you are in front of a turn:7c9a8f00e739cf71c620296ca7dabf57

But I still like GPS rotate, because if the map gets empty in front of me I know that I have to pay attention and to do anything.

@Frank Pusch does the last picture with gps rotation and disappering track line match to your bad experience? Or did you have another problem?

Hi Falco,

can you help me which settings are to change to get your results?

I would like to check it. My problem was to get the right decision, which way junction in nature follows my track before turning in it.

This is a solution idea, it's not implemented yet. Does it match your problem or did we missunderstand your need?

Ok,

no I think it does not help my problem.

If I ride an mx bike and come to a junction where the paths seperate more or less in the same direction, I must look for additional references in nature and the map. So it seems to be under some circumstances easier if the map does not rotate as much as the handle bar moves. Otherwise I have to stop and wait for the map to stabilize and look around in nature. If the map would flip around less quickly, I could do this before the junction by riding more slowly but keep on moving.

Then you just need to diasable magnetic compass. GPS direktion would be much smoother. You could twist your handlebar as much as you want without moving the map if you use GPS direktion instead of magnetic compass direction.

I did that but this does not help enough.

Thanks

Or did you have enable magnetic compass? You should disable magnetic compass above 3km/h to get smooth map rotation. Because if you are moving GPS rotation is a lot more accurate then magnetic compass and alot smoother/slower/damped

Or ?

Twisty roads. Phone mount on bike handlebar.

Pse check:

Settings > Controlling > Display > Orientation lock > Map screen > Portrait mode. (select !)

No thanks,

that helps only in a way that my app menues do not rotate but my handle bar does not rotate that much to activate the app orientation.

Thanks

Q: What are you’re actual settings ?

Q: Settings > GPS & Sensors > Orientation > Compass > Orientation only by the hardware compass ?

Did you try ?

Settings > GPS & Sensors > Orientation > Compass > Orientation via GPS or use Auto-change (3.6kmh) !

When moving is by the GPS orientation and when halted by the compass (auto change after some delay)

When halted and phone mounted on the bike handlebar (away from metal bolts) orientates the map by the (calibrated !) hardware compass direction.

Good day Frank,

I've read once more carefully comments here and I still do not have a clear idea, how this optimization may technically work and be useful. The map rotates quite quickly and I can't imagine creating some kind of "delay" in this system. Sorry, idea declined.

@Falco, idea with "rotate to point ahead" looks interesting. I see there one big negative: in the moment you look on the map, you can't clearly see if you should turn left or right because the map is not rotated in your exact direction. I think that exactly visible turn left/right turn is essential but can imagine moving wit center of rotation (your location) up and down a little, based on needs. Thanks for a tip.

exaclty, you need to analyse the direction of view like on a map without rotation.

It's a bit like garmin compass navigation but twisted because if the moving direktion points to the right to the display you need to go left. Moving direction straight go straight. Moving direction left to display go right.

I don't have any practise with this but I know people who work without map rotation. These guys have practise with reading a map where view direction not equals map direction.

Frank, are you sure that your map does rotate to much even with GPS rotation instead of compass roration?

That could only happen if your GPS position is all over the place and jumping konstantly from left to right. If you are sure, please share the GPS segment where the map rotation isn't stable because I did never see this issue. I guess nobody of us did see this because we all didn't understand what you need and did suggest many things which are not related to your issue.

  • We did tell about problems with compass
  • We suggest turning compass off which you already did
  • We thought about possible problems of unusefull map rotation (my proposal with track related map rotation)

It would help if you could make a video how bad it is then we know what you mean. Then we could think about improvements.

Hello,

sorry for the huge delay in responding.

According to some circumstances I could not keep track on this problem in last months.

I will check your ideas out in the next weeks and will write again, if my problem still exists or is not to solve with your ideas.

Thank you very much anyway for your good advice!

Frank
