Problems with srtm downloads (Italy)

I had problems with the last three update of Locus Map Pro that caused me to reinstall the application with all files;

After receiving your suggestion to experiment and use Livetracking I have bought Locus Map Pro for my wife and after installation I have bought Italy and Swizzerland maps but the download of srtm files on her tablet produced multiple errors; for have the same version I have installed the new version and studing the instruction of live tracking I have discovered many interface difference, and I have decided to make a full installation of Locus Map Pro, result with the new installation of Locus Map Pro bought for testing and using private livetracking as suggested by you was impossible for me download the srtm files of the Italy Nord and Italy South update that I have bought; another problem is that all the srtm files already downloaded buying Locus Maps reinstalled in the Data/srtm folder aren't recognized by Locus

Hi,

I'm sorry for troubles - issue will be fixed in next version. Problem is in Italian translation that cause your issue. Please do following:

  • delete *.hgt file from /Locus/data/srtm
  • start Locus > menu > settings > language & units > select any non Italian Language (e.q English)
  • Open Locus store > search / open Italy North or South > tap on icon for downloading elevation data
  • after downloading switch back to Italian

Thank you for understanding

Hi Peter,

your suggestion works, tonight (I have worked all night to 5 in the morning to solve the problem) I thought that could be connected with the language but for some reasons changing the language dosen't solve the problem (I have made many different installation and I have moved the Locus folder in all the place possibile) now I have removed the micro SD where I have the "menion.android.locus.pro" folder in the Android folder and also a Locus SD folder with all my maps, all GraphHoper files and apk for testing different versions when I install an update; after I have removed Locus and cleared all files present in my internal SD and after I have reinstalled the Locus map pro app. but without installing maps, srtm files, extensions, to be sure to have a clear installation of the last release of Locus to be sure to have all the dialogs and menu that are shown for understending how to use Livetracker.

Could be that cancelling all files could have removed old files (I have bought Locus to substituting OsmAnd in the may 2016 and I have allways installed all undate on the original install.

Anyway your suggestion works fine and now I could go on and tonight I will download all srtm files of the maps that I have biught.

Hi,

ahh I'm sorry you should write earlier. Honestly I'm little bit lost what steps you did but I'd like to only mention that some troubles could be caused due to wrong directories settings. In Menu > Settings > Miscellaneous > Default directories is possible to change directories for Locus maps or data. The best solution is keep everything in internal memory. On Android 5.1 and higher is possible to change dir for vector maps and srtm data to sdcard but I already read that some user has troubles with it.

However feel free to email me in any furher issue or question

Hi, in this 25 monthes of experience with Locus Map Pro I have experienced all possibile configuration and I have discovered that the best solution is: make an attent choice of themes (I love absolutely for my uses Elevate 4); mantain all maps on the external micro sd (to maintain maps and songs I have decided to use a Duo USB key with a double cable that permit to give energy to the duo drive) and move only the maps that are necessary to the Locus map directory (transferred on the Android folder on the ext sd), after the development of the GraphHopper plug-in, I have added some files for the planning of tracks and I have placed alla the locus files on an other micro sd that is usable for integrate.

In this way I have reached the most efficent configuration, solving some litle problems that was connected with speed.

Using external maps placed on the external SD some time generate problems, placing all necessary files into the internal memory Locus works smooth and fast but the memory became a problem.

Modifing some conditions I have obtained a good and fast configuration and GraphHopper has shown a fantastic ability in find bike track with very low traffic (in december 2016 I was involved in an accident with a car that caused me a serious brain injurie and find low traffic route is a must; two weeks ago for riding bicicle to Piacenza, 36 km from my smalltown I decided to leave GraphHopper decide for me, I have made 85 km of trip than 72 km but without traffic problems and I have my tablet on the handlebars of my bike and use it as tachimeter and navigator and is perfect).

Thats all, thank you for the solution.

Have a nice day

Hi,

oh I can see that you're quite advanced Locus user :) and I'm sorry for mentioned accident.

I guess that you don't want to risk any experiments with navigation but maybe some tips:

- with route planner is possible to define "no-go" points that affect navigation - see http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:tracks:planning#define_areas_to_avoid

- some user also use navigation with BRouter and create custom profiles where is possible to define custom preferences

http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:faq:how_to_navigate_offline#brouter_setup

Maybe you find it useful.

Hi Peter,

I'm using Locus Map Pro from may 2016 and som days after installing it I have installed imediately Brouter but there are many problems with SD carc and I have preferred to use other solution untill you have published the GraphHopper plug-in; I'm interested in exploring the possibility to set up maps and create filters to find track, but I'm busy and I have to chose standard solutions. Actually, in relation at the safety of itinerary, GraphHopper is a quite oerfect solution and find track that leave me always surprise but when the tracks are used from the point of the real condition of low traffic ad safety for cyclist are perfect. I know the use of nogo points, but riding bycicle not always is usefull for find different itinerary with low traffic for a lot of reason (the regional area where I'm leaving is p'leasant but with complex altimeries and different traffic conditions) and creating profiles for Brouter for me isn't usefull because I have searched ad used all information for installing Brouter profiles on external SD card and nothing work, this mean that the space inhibit to me the use of Brouter.

Cuold be possibile than, if I will have time, I will start to study how create profiles for GraphoHopper because has a method to find tracks that is really efficient, for my personal needs.

But I will soon read and study what you suggested.

Thank you, I go back to recharge the 80 GB on my externa SD card to ripristinate my tablet.

Have a nice day

Hi Peter,

I have immediately read what is explained in the links that you have given to me. The nogo points are usefull and I use them but, in this area, are not usable for expluding high traffic route because the traffic is local and is specific, if you don't live in that particular area isn't possible to know what kind of traffic you could find (as intenisty and as quality of drivers) but with graphHopper (possibly for information included in the description of different parts of a route) it evaluat and finds tracks, when you choose the profile bycicle, than are suprisingly efficient for the specific condition of low traffic and safety for the biker. The first time that I have uses GraphHopper for define a track I have to go in a smalltown at 10 km from my house, after I have to go to another town at 12 km from the second town and after I have to go back home; the tour, if I use the short tracks with less altimetry (the way used ususally by BRouter) I have to do 30 km approssimatevely of ride but GraphHopper found tracks for 50 km; I have decided to experiment that tracks and I was surprise because I ride route that never I had choose to do that journey but using the tracks indicated by GraphHopper I haven't find traffic and the safety of the journey was perfect; that's is what is necessary in many area: find safety tracks for bikers and also for hikers because cars and camions travels without any atention for this kind of users.

Thanks for suggestion I will consider to make a more efficient use of nogo points for that areas at known high traffic.

Have a nice day

Hi,

OK it's quite interesting and I think that the graphHopper is getting better and better (at least the online engine). The best option would be to use real traffic data but it's sounds of the future :)

Hi Peter,

I made, when I have time, many test between GraphHopper plug-in and on-line tool; actually, in my area they produce the same result, I know that this could be related only a this specific area but you have made a good job with the plug-in. I can not say how is possible because I don't know all the data that are archived in OpenStreet Maps, but in my geographical area (a live at Castell'Arquato that is a small hill town between Parma e Piacenza) when GraphHopper find a track, using the profile bike, and I ride along that track the traffic is really low and the route is usually really safe. Thats is one of the most usefull helps of navigators softwares.

Hi,

the graphhooper use only the OSM data. For some areas are OSM date little bit poor but it's getting better and OSM data can contain useful info as type of surface, scale for MTB, etc. with combination with profiles it can generate ideal track. So thank you and I'm glad that you're satisfied.

I'm sure that what you say it's true, I have switched immediately from Brouter to GraphHopper and when I will have some time I will study how made profiles for graphHopper.

Another think; the use that I made of navigation programs are exentially two:

  1. find tracks for traveling (car, bike, kike, foot, public trnansport) analizing all possible difficulties to solve related to the moving method; in this case I use this programs to discover area and route that I don't know and where I was never gone (thanks to this function, using Komoot, I have discovered a very beautifull route for do a trip of 17 km using route that wasn't unknown to me);
  2. the other function of this programs is to have a very detailed geographic atlas for study and explore many different regions and countries; some time I go to Locus Store and by all maps of a specific country (yesterday I have completed Japan, today I have bought full India); the new organizazion of the Locus Store is very pleasant but produce a strange difficulty in going back to the list of maps for a specific country after the opening of the intersting map for buy and download; coul you take a look and correct this problem?
Best regard have a nice day
    C.M.
