Connecting to Geocaching Live takes ages

Not a Problem

Hi!

Is it only me or does connecting to Geocaching Live take longer and longer in the last time? I went out caching yesterday and wanted to direct upload the fieldnotes from the cache descriptions. I had a perfect 3G connection, yet connecting to Live took around 2-3 minutes to give me the possibility to upload my fieldnote. After that, I tried the same thing at home with a 16mBit WIFI-connection, but it also took around 2 Minutes. When having an edge-connection, I have to do around 2-3 tries to even get a connection to live. Is it only me or is there a problem with Live or the connection LocusLive?

In one of the last updates the log/fieldnote - Dialog was changed so that "save offline" is Chosen first when writing a fieldnote. You have to manually change to "upload fieldnote" and then wait for locus to connect to live. When the connection problem is on the server side, perhaps something in this workflow could be tweaked to make the fielnote upload more convenient.

Same problem, but much more annoying is that fact, that every time when i close the Locus, the Geocaching plugin "logs out" from the API and i have to write login/password and allow access every time i open the locus/plugin. Can somebody fix this? I know two more people with the same problem.

funny "emotional" :)

guys, there`s not much to do on my side. I`m checking times and on my home wifi, it took

- 1.0 s to connect to gc.com and download your profile (3,3 kb)

- 0.1 s till Locus parse received data and create all necessary stuff

- 0.2 s till display dialog with your profile

last two items are always same. Should be of course slower on slower devices, but no more then max 0.5s. Just first part is independent on Locus, which is logical right? So, unfortunately ...

EDIT: btw. as I see I never answered on Gas report. How it`s status now? Is login little bit faster? (I think it depend mainly on groundspeak servers). What about creating field notes in last version?

In case of logging more caches in the field, I usually recommend to log them all offline and in the end, upload all at once to groundspeak server

Hi Menion,

storing the field notes offline and uploading them at the end is really the way to go.

The download still takes a lot of time. I just tried it again and when using wifi it takes around 15-20 seconds, but when using UMTS/HSDPA it still takes around 1-2 minutes to connect. Using Edge/GSM, even when having full reception, takes more than 3 minutes and eventually gives a timeout and an "error occurred" message.

When the connection itself is established (eg. when I get the Geocaching Live - menu) the other things go just as fast as when you tried it. Also posting a fieldnote is quite fast then. It is only the initial connect that takes so much time.

I can agree with the Gas. The connection takes a lot of time. 10-30 seconds on wifi (and the wifi is via ethernet connected to our ISP which has 10Gpbs conection to internet [i know, i`m working there as admin]). If it is only one second, it will not be an issue.

On the other side, i`m using it only for uploading the field notes at home/work (same network :D ).

so, I completely rewrote whole system for connection to Geocaching Live. There were some problems with trackables and I also wanted to united some stuff I wrote in different times. For me, speed remain almost same, but please if you`ll have some time, test this version http://forum.locusmap.eu/viewtopic.ph... and let me know if something changed. If not, then it on 90% will be a problem on groundspeak server

Hi Menion,

I tested it and the process of allowing the app to connect to gc.com with my gc-account drove me into an never ending loop.

Starting Live at Locus brought me to the "allow" page of gc.com, having put in my gc credentials, I pressed "allow" and as I remember I was referred to the login-page of gc.com again. Is looped 3-5 times and gave up then.

Las couple of days, the GC Live in Locus uploads only one field note at once (and the note is not deleted - therefore i think that the api returns some error code, or something similar). Can you please check it out? I have the current version 2.12.0

Richard sorry, this is problem on my side. It ̈s already fixed and will works fine in next release (probably in Monday/Tuestaday).

Till then, you should upload Locus/gcFieldNotes.txt file on geocaching web manually (as a workaround)

OK, it`s not an existence problem, i used the file for some years on WM platform :D Thanks for update!

Hi!

Sorry, completely forgot about that topic!

Unfortunately it didn`t get better with the latest update. The longest time was today, it took around 7 minutes to connect. As Locus is not usable during that period, I had to kill it with the task manager.

As the problem itself seems to be not fixable on your side, maybe some timeout would help. Or you could use the new "waiting" - dialog, as with the navigation function.

Hello guys,

I see this topic has a lot of votes. Unfortunately I still see no way to improve it.

Is this still happening? I believe this is problem more on a side of Groundspeak then in Locus. Because if this should be a problem in Locus, then all tasks that needs internet connection should be also slow (they all use same method to connect to internet).
