Not possible to remove LOAD MORE INFORMATION result of the point

ta-ka shared this idea 8 years ago

I sometimes want to load the extra information from google places search by tapping LOAD MORE INFORMATION, but not want to save the point with unnecessary result like pictures or opening hours. There seems no way to remove them for now.

Hello ta-ka,

so may I understand it that you wants to display these information, but not save them? There really is no way how to remove them, but my main question here is: why to remove them? Any problem with storing few bytes more?

Hi menion,

> so may I understand it that you wants to display these information, but not save them?

Yes. I want to see the information. Then save only useful information but not save wrong picture, for example. I've got a photo of empty milk bottle when I searched for hot springs. The picture was useless at all and I don't want to see it.

> why to remove them? Any problem with storing few bytes more?

Few bytes more is not a problem of course. But I don't like incorrect or useless information are shown.

Since Address, TEL No, URLs can be removed, I thought pictures and opening hours could be removed as well. Not easy or need a lot of time to implement?

Hmm understand, but still have to ask. When you search for Google Places, you firstly import all points into database and then you check how they look like?

And for example geocaching data also cannot be removed. In this case it is same ... special point created by Google Places where such information belongs.

I agree that it should be possible to remove the pictures - sometimes Google has nonsense, and sometimes there are a lot of similar or useless pictures.

Another thing: It would be nice if you could choose one of the pictures as the icon displayed in the flyout - right now, it's only ever the first manually attached picture.

And speaking of those pictures: http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/google-places-pictures-shown-too-small-due-to-badly-sized-window

So main problem here are images right? I was for some time thinking about improving "attachments" tab, so maybe these images should be also placed into this "attachment" tab? Does it solve this problem?

Yeah, I think it would solve several inconsistencies.

1.As you said, Google Places images should be just like attachments, so they can be deleted, but also be used as icon for the point.

2.All images from the attachments tab should be shown in a scrollable thumbnail section like the Google Images right now. This feature is extremely useful and should not be scrapped. You can have a lot of attachments, not all images, so just viewing the images in an easy way is not possible. Like this, it would be one nice quick image viewer, plus a tab to manage all your attachments. While you're at it, don't forget http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/google-places-pictures-shown-too-small-due-to-badly-sized-window ;)

I think it should look like this:

Of course the Google Places info could be condensed or extended (don't know what the API provides...)

What do you think?

PS: I'm aware ta-ka also wanted to get rid of the textual information - it doesn't bother me personally and I see no real upside. BUT: There should be a button to update it! Google's data is usually up to date, so if you have an old point, your opening hours might be out-of-date. That sucks, when you're standing in front of the restaurant ;)

Hello

  • I was immediately also thinking about placing quick small image gallery from attached images into the first tab, so agree
  • Option to update info is missing, agree as well

A complete update of points & track screen is on road plan. Damn, still too much work ... :/

Always good when we agree ;) Don't worry, it's definitely not highest priority, totally usable as is, but it's good to know that it's on your mind - looking forward to it.

@Menion: Any news when this might be tackled? ;)

Hello Ingo,

depends on what :). Because in the latest version, Google Places were removed, this idea may be closed because an option to load data is no longer possible.

Really? Why?? Sorry, I didn't notice that until now. Is it because of some constraints by Google? Because that ability to automatically display opening times etc. was fantastic!

Anyway, my point 2 above is still a valid idea, even without the Google Places images:

2.All images from the attachments tab should be shown in a scrollable thumbnail section like the Google Images right now. This feature is extremely useful and should not be scrapped. You can have a lot of attachments, not all images, so just viewing the images in an easy way is not possible. Like this, it would be one nice quick image viewer, plus a tab to manage all your attachments.

There were two reasons. First, to be honest: we paid for Google Places but still, one condition was not met. One of the "Terms of use" was to display results only on Google Maps. In August 2018 Google increased prices to some crazy numbers and with one-time payment for Locus Map, we are unable to pay such services. So a good time to get rid of it.

About screen with attachments. I'm almost two months now working on a completely new map core for Locus Map, so all other stuff are on the second row. Update of point/track screen is definitely planned and I'm sure it will be the reality in 2019 ;).

Thx for clarifying - I feared it might have been something like this. It's a shame, because the feature was quite useful. So when the update of the point/track screen is on your table, please consider this again, and perhaps some ability to manually add fields like "Opening Times" (see alsohttp://help.locusmap.eu/topic/adding-own-attributes-to-waypoints).

And looking forward to new map core :)

I know. We will try to improve LoPoints during next months to contain as much available info as possible.

I believe it was the correct step to remove places. Not because of price, by mainly because I still had a bad feeling we use something we should not. And new simplified terms of use talk clearly: https://developers.google.com/places/web-service/policies#map . You will hardly search for the sentence with more times mentioned "Google Maps" :).

Thanks for understanding.

Sure, absolutely! I'll just miss the ability to search for some generic term like the name of a store chain and then getting a list of results that I can display on the map. From my tests, no other provider available in Locus allows something like this now... :(

Thanks,

And did you tried to use points that come with LoMaps (available under menu > more > Points of interest)? They usually contain quite a lot of useful information.

photo

Yeah, true, I realized after I wrote my post. But now it's not very intuitive, because it's differenty entry points. Would it be possible to integrate the Search for LoMaps POIs into the Search menu? Usually, searching for stuff involves some trying out different sources, so having it all in one search menu would be much easier. And I'm sure many users don't even realize they have access to all these POIs, because they just use the search function...

Sure .. as I wrote here, LoPoints will be full-time work for Milan (our third developer) most probably since the start of the year. So, expect some nice news ;).

Hello.

The idea how to deal with images sounds very nice. Concerning about text info, I usually want to clear or edit them when the info is wrong. If the text(html I guess) can be copied into clipboard, I'll paste it into description section and modify it. Then original text info is possible to clear, it's perfect.

I just returned from holiday and stumbled over this big time again, at least the missing "Update info"

What happened:

I researched some POIs for holidays in fall/winter. Now when I went (in spring), I had a lot of wrong opening times for museums, zoos, etc. - off-season, they closed much earlier. I had to look up the correct times on their websites. In this case, no harm done - but the other way round (expecting some place to be open until 6pm, when it closes at 4pm) but have been a big nuisance, at best.

So apart from the "Update info" button, I propose that it should also be stored and displayed when the info was last updated. Then I immediately see "Uh, that could be a tad out-of-date...
