Line drawing based on compaas bearing

I would like to be able to enter a compass bearing and draw a straight line from my current location (from GPS chip), on my Personal offline map, with the line following the compass bearing. In other words, draw a straight line from my current location following a compass bearing to a distant point. If at all possible I would like to be able to pinpoint my current GPS location with a hot spot instead of entering latitude and longitude. Is this possible with my latest version of Locus Pro?

This is for pre-flight information for both the balloon pilot and the chase crew. The pilot or a crewmember send aloft a piball (pilot balloon inflated with helium) and take a compass bearing on the piball flight direction( prevailing wind direction). Then based on the compass bearing the line would be drawn from their current location to show the balloon`s probable flight path enabling the pilot and the crew to get an idea of possible landing areas based on the wind speed and direction. Hot air balloons are steered by the wind directions and have limited steering. They are are usually steered by catching different wind directions and varying currents by ascending or descending. The pilot also has a GPS in the balloon so both crew and pilot have radio contact. This makes it easier for the chase crew to follow the balloon. In our particular case the pilot is currently drawing the probable flight path


with grease pencil on an acetate covered map. Both the pilot and crew have android tablets with Locus so the info could be plotted on both tablets.

Hello George,


maybe some additional points:


- Heading Line could be useful for you. So when you send the piball, rotate your table (display) in direction of piball. Then you can check (based on the map) the countryside in front of view from map and headline.


Check also possibility to create new point using projection.


- Go to the Menu > Data > Points > Create new (from top panel).


- Set the name and in field LOCATION choose “Projection” .


- Projection allows to create distant point if you know the bearing of the piball and some approximate distance from your GPS position.


-Then select created point and choose “Guide on”. So you can see the line between your actual position and the distant point.

thanks for your explanation, i am also an hotair pilot ;-))


I practise a little bit different workflow as Petr described.


I create two points by “projection” depending on weather forecast or piball and store them in a POI folder.


After that I follow the steps 3-7 two times, and so I can see possible area for this flight.


Do you know this tool from gynta? Your case crew will be happy ,they allways know the position of the ballon.

Thanks for the info, Wolfgang and Petr. I think Petr`s info and Wolfgang`s suggestions are both workable solutions. I will try them out. We are getting ready for a long jump balloon flight sometime in the near future( the next month or two). We are waiting for the right winds from an Arctic front. The flight may be as long as several hundred miles depending on the wind speed so I will need to project a long flight path.
