ANT manager with Locus Map Pro on Cell phones and tablet

I am able to use this software on an Alcatel OneTouch A564C cellphone running Android 4.4.2 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T350 running Android 6.0.1 but not on a Samsung Galaxy Express Prime (SAMSUNG-SM-J320A), also running Android 6.0.1. The tablet and the Galaxy Express Prime both have the same Quad Core ARMv7 Processor (VFPv4, NEON). When I attempt to connect to an ANT device that works with the Alcatel and the Samsung tablet I receive the "Process aborted" ("Sensor disconnected") messages - continuously, until I turn off the 'search' slider.

The ANT devices that work are: the Garmin Tempe (thermometer) and the VivoActiveHR (when 'broadcast' is enabled). I have two old Garmin chest strap heart rate monitors that cannot be detected. They work with Garmin products - the VivoActiveHR and a Fennix 2. First priority is to just get the ANT manager working on the Galaxy Express Prime.

Any suggestions?

Good day Steven,

when there are any troubles with ANT+ devices, best what I may suggest to start, is download sample testing application from ANT+ manufactures from Google Play and test your devices there. May you try it please: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dsi.ant.antplus.pluginsampler , thank you!

Good morning Menion,

The PluginSampler didn't work but it told me what to do. I plugged a Garmin ANT transmitter / receiver into the serial port of the cell phone and everything worked. Setting a Proximity value MAY be required to actually connect to a device. I've only tried a Garmin Tempe thermometer. After I connected once using a Proximity setting, I turned it off and tried again. It connected once but then not again until I re-enabled Proximity.

So does this mean there is hardware in some but not all cell phones and tablets supporting ANT? I was surprised it worked on an older cell phone but not on the Samsung cell phone with hardware very similar to the Sansung tablet on which it DID work.

EXCELLENT software - and support - by the way!! Do you do this all yourself or supervise thousands of employees? Also, I showed this to a devoted Apple I-phone friend. Any chance an Apple version will be coming soon?

Hi,

So may I understand that you try to use ANT+ sensor on device aithout hardware support? Well yes, hardware support is needed. Older devices ( more then cca 2 years, here usually only Sony supported ANT+), now also most of Samsung devices and HTC but best is to check specification of your device.

And we are four people for now, but just me who work on Locus Map itself. Also because of this, iOS version has maybe 1% chance to ever happen. Say sorry to your friend ;).

Is there some specific piece of circuitry we should look for? I am all but certain that nowhere in the documentation for either of the two devices the ANT+ Manager worked without the Garmin USB ANT device was there any mention of support for Garmin. That it ran on the Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T350 running Android 6.0.1 but not on a Samsung

Galaxy Express Prime (SAMSUNG-SM-J320A), also running Android 6.0.1.

The tablet and the Galaxy Express Prime, both with the same Quad Core

ARMv7 Processor (VFPv4, NEON) suggests support for Garmin with the tablet wasn't intentional, just the use of some circuitry that wasn't included for the Samsung cell phone.

I also suspect that even though ANT+ Manager works on the Alcatel OneTouch A564C cellphone, this wasn't the result of a conscious decision by Alcatel to support Garmin. This is not terribly important because I suspect with a Garmin ANT+ USB adapter the ANT+ Manager will work on just about anything. It would just be nice to not have to carry the adapter and cable around with the phone.

Hmm the best place I found to check if your device has ANT+ support seems to be on official page of ANT manuactures here: https://www.thisisant.com/consumer/ant-101/ant-in-phones . Scroll down to section called "ANT+ manufacturer enabled devices" and there is a section with Samsung, Sony etc. so there you may check it.

And yes, with USB stick, it will work with every device, but I absolutely agree it's not a confort to take care about another tiny device. I has same experience, mainly because of full USB slow and inability to connect Powerbank during a trip/ride.

And last one ... I think it really do not depend on processor, but manufacturer has to device to put hardware support for ANT+ into their device. I have quite old Sony device with single core processor and even this was able to connect without ANT stick.

Hope I helped you at least little bit.

"Hope I helped you at least little bit." - You've got to be kidding! Everything I wanted to know about ANT and a lot more besides!!

One last question - where do I find the log files for ANT+ devices I successfully connect to Locus Maps Pro? It is probably in your great documentation somewhere but it is easier to just ask you. Speaking of which if the link you provided in your last response isn't already in it, it should be in my humble opinion. Also speaking of which I have a fairly complete Acrobat PDF version produced from your web-based documentation I can send you if you are interested (and there isn't a better PDF file already?)

It was helpful, glad to hear it :).

What you mean by a "log"? You mean a recorded values from your sensor? Common use-case is to start track recording and all sensor values will be recorded in a track. You may see them during recording on a dashboard or latech in track details screen. Or later export them to GPX/CSV files.

I'm currently on small vacation so it is harder on mobile to copy&paste correct links in manual, so if something is not clear, I'll give you precise link into manual a week later, if this is not a problem. Thanks for understanding.
