Automatic creation of wayponit names and quick navigation

Uli shared this idea 12 years ago

I miss a function where I can qickly create waypoints without typing a name. The name field should automatically be predefined with something like wpt1, wpt2, wpt3,... A additional checkbox "guide on" near the name field should start a quick navigation.

Im using locus for biking and there is not enough time to look an tap many times to create and follow a waypoint. Perhaps this could be combines with "grins" idea, which is already very popular.

Another idea: instead of having lots of wpt1, wpt2,... if you mark the first waypoint, name it once and all the next ones have same name+counter (auto count up: 01,02,03..) untill you overwrite the wpt then it holds the next name and starts counting from 01.

Another idea:

When the waypoint creation dialog box opens, NAME field is prefilled with Date/Time stamp. You can overwrite it, or accept as is.

Time permitting, entry can be made in DESCRIPTION field, or accept as is.

A Date/Time stamp is unique, and in a folder they automatically sort in chronological order.

Waypoints can be renamed later, if desired.

Good Idea !

Question: when exporting waypoints, description is sent also ?

Which format is to use for export?

and

This should also work for FotoPois !

Hi Rob-

Good questions. I created a test poi with a description, and exported in both GPX and KML. Then sent to my laptop and opened both GPX and KML files with my favorite text program, Editpad Pro. In both cases, the description is embedded.

I totally agree! Recently I was on bike trip in forest and I was adding a lot of point+photos. I wasn`t alone so I didn`t have tim to manually write point names. espacially on a bike, sometimes with dirty hands. I just wanted to take a photo and save the point with default name. But it wasn`t possible. So I just typed a random letter to give the point any name. :/ Annoying.

In my opinion, the best idea is to have already filled name field with time + date values AND (this is a must) this text should be marked, ready to be deleted with one button and then overwritten. This small feature should be also introduced in the Track naming dialog. The default text should be already marked, so the user will decide to

1. I don`t have time to name it, i just need to save it with default name.

2. Ok. I will change the name, and he is starting to type.

Now the option is that the user need to erase the whole default name (eg. with clicking on the Name field and then pressing backspace) to start typing the name. This small feature will really increase time saving in many critical situations. I had a lot of them, eg. I was getting by car to my target location and I wanted to stop and save the track. But I didnt have time, because I had to get out of the car. Any additional time saving features are greatly appreciated in those moments:)

damn I discovered this topic as one of most wanted and this brings me back to stupid issue that is for almost infinity in Locus

current system:

tapping on "Add new point" display dialog with POI edit. Name is pre-filled with date & time, keyboard is hidden. Tapping on name field, DESELECT text and display keyboard. OK and Cancel buttons are below keyboard!

after some playing:

tapping on "Add new point" display dialog with POI edit. Name is pre-filled with date & time, keyboard is visible and OK & Cancel button are above keyboard. It`s possible to start writing (that will overwrite current selected text) ...

same done for tracks

to "quick guide" - if you want start guide really quickly, it was already discuss here https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/top...
