Backroad Mapbooks Canada

I have been using Backroad Mapbooks Canada GPS maps for several on my now old Garmin Nuvi. I absolutely love the maps but not my old Garmin Nuvi. I also use Locus on my phone to create tracks and have recently been notified recently by BRMB that their maps are now available in Locus..... BUT.... They are just static maps with no real zoom function like a normal gps. BRMB tells me that if I want to use their maps with a full functioning gps to use Backcountry Navigator XE android app(still in development and completely useless atm) or GAIA app(which is nowhere near the quality of an app that Locus is).

So my question is..... Can BRMB Canada become a full functioning gps map within the Locus app?.... I would gladly pay a fee or a reasonable subscription.

Dear Patrick,

thank you for the question but what exactly mean the "Real zoom function?" Do you mean for example possibility to click on POI and show more info about POI? Because the you can zoom-in / out the BRMB map but you can't click on map to get additional info.

Thanks, Petr

I have not tried BRMB in Locus.... But I did try it in another android app called Avenza. I purchased BRMB within the app and quickly realized that it was not what I wanted. When I tried zooming in to a location, the quality of map started to deteriate as of it where just a jpeg image being blown up.... The map did not re-render(if that is a word).

So before buying BRMB in Locus I emailed BRMB about my concerns and was given this reply....

"Locus only supports the static maps similar to avenza, for a GPS style map you would need to use GAIA or the Backcountry Navigator XE."

I have since bought a subscription to GAIA and it seems to meet my needs so far.... But have not really put it the test in the outdoors yet. Locus is my favorite app though.... and I would be much more comfortable using it over GAIA.

Hi Patrick,

the BRMB maps in Locus are raster base map so the result can be similar as you described. But I have to say that we reflect the BRMB map scale that can be 1:500 000 - 1:200 000. The map is really static and you can not select any point as I mentioned. You can zoom-in/out, the max zoom-level should be sharp but more detailed zoom-levels only re-scale the map and it become "pixelized". You can probably noticed the same behavior with any online map. Please see attached screenshot from the app where are shown official zoom-levels.

Thanks, Petr
