Best practice with Locus in Desert Rallies

fschuhm shared this thanks 6 years ago

Just back from a Sahara desert rallye, where i tested Locus pro as my main system for outdoor navigation during the races. This Software enabled me to replace my heavy Windows as well as my Garmin devices and software in the car through a smart mobile device. This will be the future. So I will use it again in December for travelling Namibia and Botswana. I hope, the sales volume of this project allows the developper-team to ensure further maintenance and support. The main issue for me was the fact, that i didn`t find a way to convert the existing powerful free maps (such as Tunisia V13 ...), which are garmin-formated by tradition) to the .map format.

hello gynta

... Where can i see an orig. example?

look f.e. at "gps.4x4travel.org/" for tunisia v13, which is actually the best vector map for tunisia.

you need a Vectormap?

yes, i think so, because this map covers main roads down to camel paths.

okay, okay, maybe i`m not the best-joke maker. There are "special ways" through dune regions, you never think, that a car can succeed (also not a 4x4). But with some efforts and a shovel, it could work finally. So I call them "camel path". If you look for "khsar ghilane", a small oasis, you will see them.

Yes Sir, it would be very helpful to to convert the Tunesia map from travel.org

.

See my Camel Pathes here!

sorry, "ksar ghilane" is the name of the oasis (instead of "khsar ghilane")

- you use a blank map

- load https://www.dropbox.com/s/df8iawgg9b8... in Locus

- use "Guide on"

- and start your engine :o)

ok ok - my jokes are not better...

a similar shot with vectormap and the great Volatile_Cycle_Hike-theme from jusc

We are back to the topic:

"How can i convert a garmin *. Img - to a locus compatible map?"

And i must say...

all my experiments have brought a bad result.

But maybe Menion has good (new) hints.
