Better "Increase Map Resolution" for vector maps

"Increase Map Resolution" is useful, but I rarely use it for long because the resulting map is blurry; it apparently just multiplies pixels.

With vector maps, could this be improved to scale all elements while rendering? Similar to the existing "Text Size" feature, but for all elements. This would produce a crisp, sharp map, but with larger elements (eg for quick readability in the field) as needed.

This would also give new life to some themes I currently can't use, because the features are just so darn tiny.

Hi,

thank you for an idea. I talked about it with the main developer and we decided to reject it.

Locus and the themes are able to respect the resolution of device and to change the size of the elements based on resolution. Please see for example the default build-in themes (I hope that readability of the default themes is acceptable). But the theme has to be prepared for this feature.

I can understand that with some old themes is result different but it should be fixed by the themes. Because the theme defines the appearance of the map. Please try to contact the developer of problematic theme and ask him for new version that would respect the resolution of device.

Thank you for understanding

Ah okay, thanks.

I use this feature more for temporary changes, so I'd need to find a pair of themes, one "normal", one "chunky", or find a theme with normal- and chunky settings as overlays.

When I say "chunky", I mean larger features, such as thicker roads and large labels, suitable for reading outdoors without putting on glasses.

I haven't yet found a good "chunky" theme - and I've tried every one I can find - and editing themes is truly painful as you might appreciate.

But I understand if you don't want to implement this. Thanks for considering.

Hi,

I can understand your needs but I really think that current system is usable. I tried the default Locus Hike&Bike theme with "Increase Map Resolution" = 200% From my opinion are the elements quite huge and map is still sharp (please see attached image). Together with "Quick settings" and right panel you can change resolution in two clicks. I would suggest to use theme where is the size of elements defined in "dp" units that respects the resolution of device and combine it with "Increase Map Resolution"

Thank you for understanding

I'll respectfully disagree. That image isn't "sharp", it's "not too bad". At 800% it's obviously pixellated.

But I understand, you can't work on every feature that people suggest. Thanks anyway.

Honestly I think that Locus is developed based on the suggestions of our users (this is probably reason of all various features that are available in Locus) However back to your idea. Do you really need the 800% - would you please send me screenshot of your vector map with default themes and 800% resolution?

Thank you

Best regards

I'm willing to let the matter die (it doesn't seem right arguing a case after the judge bangs the gavel), but since you asked...

800% is extreme of course (unless you're vision-impared); I mentioned it only to emphasize the point.

Here are two shots of a recent LoMap with default City theme. One is normal resolution, the other is 200%. I have then magnified both by 200% in a paint program, but the crosshair demonstrates the native resolution. Clearly the non-text elements (railroad, streets) on the second image are pixellated, whereas - in an ideal world - they would be sharp.

No big deal, but it would be nice.

I can not remain unresponsive.

After switching to a new device 5.0 inches, 1080 x 1920 pixels, I had to change text and elements to 150-200% to make the offline vector maps at least partially legible.

Online maps do not have this option and I do not use them for this reason. On an old device of 4.3 inches, 480 x 800 pixels, all maps and elements of the ideal size were all. It's sad... Sometimes the online map would be needed for me.
