Creating maps from your own GIS layers

Hi, I am using Locus with my own GIS data layers, using Maptiler and MOBAC to create these maps. See my blog http://pvanb.wordpress.com/2012/03/19... for a short tutorial. It isn`t a terribly quick way to do things, so I am wondering if there are other better solutions out there.

Hello Paulo,

nice article. I`m not much experienced with creating maps and all these stuff around but for the first sight, the most simple solutions seems to be to make locus handle tiles directly from MapTiler isn`t it?

Hi Menion, it could be one solution. The last time I tried, it was the only way to do this for svSIG mobile, another map viewer for Android.

It does mean that for large maps you may end up having to copy a huge number of files to your phone. This can be fairly slow. I have no idea what it means in terms of speed of file handling on your phone though. One idea is maybe to make Locus handle a zip file with all these files, but that may have consequences for speed of access to the tiles I guess.

Creating (converting) the map isn`t as complicated as it may look at first sight, but I can imagine that people with less experience in this area might get a bit discouraged if they see the steps involved. But then, these might not be the people working with their own data layers to start with?

Since Locus has MBTiles support, there is an easier way. You can use TileMil to create maps for offline use (MBTiles format), see here for more information.

Hmm good, so seems that TileMill cover all your needs and this topic may be closed right? I`m also going to check your info about extended support for MBT, so maybe it will be even better (but I`ll rather not promise anything)

Yes, TileMill covers my needs for creating maps for Locs. If you would manage to add the extended support for MBT, you will have a killer feature.. there is no other app, as far as I know, who supports something like that.

Hi Menion,

First let me wish you a great new year... and, just checking, would be extended support for MBTiles (i.e., support for UTF-8 grid technology) be a good item for your new year To do list ;-)
