IGN topo map offline

I tried the IGN maps on line, and I stopped that. It's very difficult, may be impossible, to have maps when I'm in hiking. In addition, I use SityTrail France. For 25 € a year, it's very easy to have the IGN 1/25000 maps with all details. Could you have this ? For me, Locus Pro is the more performant and ergonomic of the products that I tested. I am a volonteer hiking guide in France.

Hello Gérard,

would you please give me more information why it is not possible to use IGN maps in Locus? Is it caused because maps works only online or missing some elements on the maps?

Thank you

Petr

On line, it's OK. By hiking, we generally don't have an efficient internet connexion. On line, it's quite impossible to load all the different levels of the map, in order to have them off line. With SityTrail, I can load maps, and use them off line.

I would like to check the current status regarding IGN France online maps. In the Locus shop I found a IGN France maps subscription for 1299 LoCoins/year. This offer tells that this covers unlimited online map usage and unlimited offline map download. May I ask some questions?

1.) Is the statement regarding IGN map download for offline use really true?

2.) What is the highest supported resultion?

3.) Is it possible to download all France easily, or does the user has to deal with lots of separate map tiles?

4.) How much memory is required for all France in high resolution?

Hi Bernard,

thank you for "remind" of this topic. I'm glad to say the IGN offline maps are really available for online and also for offline. But it works in subscription mode. You need to subscribe IGN Online and Offline item in Locus store. You can browse and download maps only in case that subscription is purchased and active. Online browsing and also all downloaded offline maps are disabled when the subscription expires or is canceled by user. To your questions:

1) yes, it's true :)

2) The highest resolution is zoom-level=18 but it's only re-scaled level=17. So we can say that's about 1:5000 - 1:10 000

3) You can download maps (during active subscription) in the same way as any other online map ( http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_download )

4) Difficult to say but it's raster tiled map and the size will be really huge. I expect about 20 - 40 GB maybe more for whole France. Please consider the size of downloaded area and also the range of zooms. It's possible to say that every level is 4 times bigger then previous one.

Thank you

Petr
