Locus Pro vector maps issues

Hi,

I`m Locus Pro user and have some questions about vector maps. The last weeks I had the opportunity to test some maps and navigation apps and my remaining favorites are Locus and Osmand. Locus has so much possibilities I really like but there are some severe restrictions concerning vector maps:

1. The rendering of the vector maps (on vectormaps4locus.eu) may be good for driving by car, but surely not for hiking or biking. The smaller roads and paths are hardly to be seen (and are sometimes suddenly interrupted) and polygons like forests seems sometimes not to be visible. Osmand offers three beautiful renderings which seems to be similar to the Mapnik-style or something like that which is much better for hiking and cycling. Maybe you could provide such rendering styles or give a manual for this (but please for Dummies).

2. I couldn`t find SRTM-contourline-data for Locus vector maps. I find this absolutely necessary for hiking or biking. Those contourline data is provided for Osmand on www.pistes-nordiques.org, but this .obf-format is not compatible with Locus. Is there any source for contourline data for Locus?

3. I can load only one vector map at once. This restriction makes it impossible to route over country borders without changing the map. And even if there are vector contourline maps I couldn`t use it together with a map. Why not give the possibility to choose more than one map to be displayed? Osmand displays every map which is in the vector maps folder and you can deactivate those you don`t want to be displayed.

O.k. it`s these three vector data issues which prevent me from Locus becoming my absolute favorite. But maybe these problems can be solved? I wouldn`t mind if this costs some Euros.

Thanks Joachim

Hi,

on all your question is one and quite simple answer.

I personally do not have enough time to write own Vector map renderer. Because of this, I use quite well working library from http://code.google.com/p/mapsforge/ called MapsForge. So all improvements that touch Vector maps (rendering, offline routing, address search, ...) depend on this library!

And now some positive news.

ad 1. They`re still quite active in developing. New version of this library is coming and it will allow use custom rendering styles, more here http://code.google.com/p/mapsforge/wi...

ad 2. don`t know anything about it. You may suggest it n their site

ad 3. known issue. I also hope, it will be solved soon ...

Thank you Menion, now I understand, but although it`s kind of disappointing. I`ve read many, many internet sites and I`ve now learned that making own maps and rendering own maps is something for absolute (Linux-) Experts and nothing for normal Windows and Android users. The mapsforge Osmarender-style is - as I see - nohing that is to be changed in short terms. And I don`t know how the Osmand people have solved the problem (because they have a very good rendering) and they probably won`t tell me and even if they would I wouldn`t unterstand it.

So maybe time will bring new rendering styles which are more suited for hikers and bikers.

about rendering .. don`t worry. As I see it, when this will work ... I or someone in community will create some styles and allow to downloaded them directly in Locus, so it`ll be possible to switch different styles on the fly ...

Menion, I don`t understand why you don`t tell anything regarding SRTM support (no. 2 in Joachim`s questions) in Locus in near future.

because compute of altitude for some points is quite different compare to display contour lines in map. Compute contour lines "on the fly" from SRTM files is almost impossible task for me now so it do not answer on his question

please, don`t make it too academic. I don`t mind if contour lines are computed "on the fly" or not. I want to see contour lines on my device, no matter how they are computed or displayed, that`s all (certainly I was asking for contour line maps).

In the meantime I learned from the mapsforge forum, too that there is ongoing in this matter, so I`ll be patient.

Today I was cycling and the tracking was so excellent, I never had this with my old Garmin device. So the smartphone can completely replace an ordinary GPS, but maps, especially vector maps have still to be improved (for Garmin devices I had the excellent openmtbmap).

Sorry, that I am only asking for this and that, unfortunately I haven`t the knowledge to help in the development of maps and else, I`m just a busy OSM logger, that`s my way to help.

Thanks Joachim

It was my comment on mapsforge forum, though be careful what you believe ;-)
