New one finger zoom method: Double tap and hold

joeloc shared this idea 11 years ago
Completed

Googlemaps recently introduced a new method for zooming the map: double tap but HOLD the second tap (ie dont release finger). Now you can zoom in/out by simply moving your finger up and down. Try it... it works great and feels very intuitive.

This is an excellent idea and adds plenty usability:

* Allows holding the smartphone in one hand and zoom with the thumb.

* Second hand is not needed.

* Second finger is not needed.

* No wasting screen space with + / - buttons.

* No "aiming" for buttons.

* Does not conflict with other Locus tapping actions.

hey... four votes in only 9 hours :).

I like this idea... but do you find logical that down (to me) is zoom out and up (from me) is zoom in?

I feel natural would be just opposite:

down = zoom in

up = zoom out

Just tried it in Maps. Really feels good.

Nice gimmick - but we really need this?

* Allows holding the smartphone in one hand and zoom with the thumb.

* Second hand is not needed.

* Second finger is not needed.

On a bike trip, my phone is on the handlebar -> no second hand needed.

My motor skills are ok - i can use two fingers too.

While hiking, my mobile is in the pocket and if i like to have a look at Locus - i have to use two hands - with - or without this function.

* No wasting screen space with + / - buttons.

I have no extra buttons - so i have no wasting space..

* No "aiming" for buttons.

Thank to my great motor skills, i can handle it with two fingers :)

* Does not conflict with other Locus tapping actions.

maybe - but menion only can answer that.

but hey - as i wrote - it`s a nice gimmick - so why not...

It is logical. Same as all zoom buttons on all multimedia keyboards: up=zoom in, down=zoom out. Also... "logical" in this case simply means to imitate google maps. Thats what most people know and will expect.

Yes we really need this! Think hiking with poles... think gloves... think hiking with one hand on rocks... think being on a sailing boat holding the rudder with one hand and having your smartphone dangling on your neck in a waterproof case... think a bit further than the usual afternoon geocaching stroll in your back yard :-)

Besides... a few dozen highly paid user interface experts working for the Google Maps team already made the decision if this is useful. Who are we to question it? :-)

Hi,

Joeloc’s dreams are sometime (how to say polite) “awesome” but I agree with this idea. This is one of things which can improve user experience without rebuilding of whole GUI. I always control phone only with one hand (thumb) so I’ll welcome this function. I hope that Menion agree with me when I say: we’ll implement it :-)

I’m only little bit afraid that somebody will come with idea to create more and more complex controlling (tap three-times for other maps, tap four times for track record and so on). Please, stay only with zoom function. ;-)

You are funny - you thinking about..:

Newsflash!

"Kirk Mc Cormic conquers the everest - with an Andrioid smartphone and ...Locus!"

"Herold Todd crosses the desert of malawi - with an Andrioid smartphone and ...Locus!"

"Sven Stevenson goes to the North Pole - with an Andrioid smartphone and ...Locus!"

as i say - why not... :-)

I was actually about to add a little extra idea to doubletap&hold, but it will be reasonable :-)

Doubletap&Hold is pretty cool for zooming. The same gesture could also be used, to allow really quick switching to maps of a bigger or smaller scale. This is not that much different from zooming to be confusing I think.

Here`s how it might work:

As soon as the user doubletabs & holds, Locus would automatically fade in a tiny list. It shows the next two maps with a smaller scale and the next two maps with a bigger scale. If the user simply moves up and down, nothing changes. The list simply goes away when the tap is released.

But if the user moves over one of the map names and then lets go, Locus will switch to the chosen map.

This process can be fine tuned in many ways. Locus could eg only show the scale list when user actually does move horizontally. Then it wouldnt get in the way of normal zooming.

In any case, it is important from a usability perspective that the whole action (be it zooming or map scaling) is always handled via doubletap & hold, move around somewhat, release. No extra taps!

Or is this second thingy too much and I`m getting carried away :-)?

As Petr say. ... ;)

`think it`s time for your next mbike trip :D

And there could be even more! Imagine Locus showing buttons for the "next" "closest" maps in the four corners (with proper direction) while doubletap-holding. Then we would have zooming & "scaling" & "near maps" all in one UI, easily reachable with a simple doubletap.

It wouldnt even need complex user documentation or anything because everything is pretty self-explainable:

"To zoom or change maps quickly, double tap and hold anywhere on the map. Move finger up and down to zoom or towards one of the buttons to change maps."

- there is currently need for faster method for zoom. This method

1) has quite a lot of votes ;)

2) allow single hand quick zoom even during some activity

3) seems to be some kind of "Standard" now

implemented

impemented??

Menue/settings/Map-control/The style map control

with selection "locus" there is no reaction

with selection "Google" one and two finger zoom works fin, but 3 fingertab is also no reaction

implemented today at night and today morning ...

sorry menion for question

i found these settings in V 2.14.0

but i will wait patient

settings you wrote about exists in Locus for a few years.

new method with single-point zoom (this topic) was created today, so it`s not available anywhere. You have to wait ton next version

seems I`ll have to post news in moment they`re available for public. For now, keep it mind that when I wrote implemented, it means it`s implemented right now, so it`s need to wait on next version :)

yay... thanks! onefinger zoom is especially nice on monsterphones like galaxy note, when used with one hand. only the thumb is available then.

uf sure, you`re welcome. I`ve finished this feature now, almost day. There were some problems with pinch zoom and also with messing this feature with some other gestures. But now seems that all works perfectly. You`ll see in next test version ... ;)

Double tap and hold works nicely in latest testing version. Now a long standing problem becomes even more annoying however: Zooming out just shows useless BLANK WHITE SPACE instead of real map data. Whats the problem?

Menion, I like this way of zooming, but it`s "too weak" - moving my thumb across the whole screen just zooms 2 levels :-( Please make it faster, so I can really zoom out/in a lot (5-6 levels), this also has nice side-effect that in horizontal screen layout 2-3 levels are possible (currently 1, being quite useless).

For me, the white space / really ugly map display vanished after releasing the thumb, so the map is redrawn on new zoom level.

@Menion: Would be nice if map could already be redrawn when thumb is still on the display but not moved any more for e.g. 1 second, as that is required to make the map "readable". Only care about that if it`s not much work.

This zoom method is superb, but it is still "too weak" (only zooming 1-2 levels when moving thumb across whole screen). I usually need 2-4 levels so I need to zoom 2-3 times -- this shall only be a parameter change, so very very quick.

White areas - all is around CPU usage. Why load with every move map in current zoom? I believe that reloading only necessary map is a lot better (faster). Mainly in case of online maps (and yes, vector maps also).

Amount of scale - I've inspired by Google. It's not probably exact value, but I think it should be close to what they use in Google Play.

Is there more voices, who wants faster/slower zoom by this method?

I believe that for faster scrolling exists method with long click on any of zoom buttons and so it's not necessary to change screen of this 'one finger zoom' method.

The =zoom]manual uses the term tap and draw in two places in can see, but how many others? Shouldn't this be tap and drag?

photo

...or "double tap, hold and move down/up"? ;)

What ever, you are right "tap & draw" is wrong description.

@all

If you found more incorrect parts in new manual, feel free to post in forum thread:
