Reduce screen area used by UI

Carl Mascott shared this idea 12 years ago

1. Most important thing on the screen is the map.

2. All mobile devices have screens smaller than optimum for map viewing.

3. Program UI should use as little screen area as possible to maximize area for map.

Concrete suggestion:

1. Move information panel from top panel to bottom panel. Reduce size of zoom buttons in the bottom panel to make room for information panel.

2. Eliminate top panel: all remaining functions are duplicates of those in the Main menu obtained by pressing the Android Menu button.

Related suggestion for Custom Screen:

Eliminate the Custom Screen toolbar. Move all functions in toolbar to pop-up menu activated by Android Menu button.

Both of these suggestions are practical on my tablet (7" 1024x600 screen). I have no idea if they are practical on a smartphone, though: I don`t have one to try Locus on.

You can hide the panels. look at global settings.

You can hide the topInfo

You can use custonscreens http://forum.asamm.cz/viewforum.php?f=41

RE hiding top panel:

Text in Settings->Map->control says "Hide top panel if inactive for a while".

I can`t test yet (waiting for GPS I ordered to arrive), but that seems to mean that panel will be unhidden whenever there is updated GPS info to show in information panel. Correct me if I`m wrong. Thus the top panel will not STAY hidden, will it?

RE custom screen:

The trouble with current implementation is that using ANY custom screen puts the custom screen toolbar at top of screen, which I don`t want.

This thread is BS.

Any panel can be hidden, and when visible, the buttons, at least on a cell phone screen the size of an HTC EVO 4G, are already at the absolutely minimum size. If you want bigger buttons or more map area, the only practical solution is to buy a bigger device.

Also, when you are moving, nice options are to rotate and displace the map so that your GPS position is lower in the screen. That gives you more map area ahead of you, as you shouldn`t care as much about what is behind you.

I`m now thoroughly confused on custom screen toolbars. Don`t want to clutter up this thread, though. If you have time please see:

thanks all for support!

So Carl,

we may continue in discussion here, that`s fine, anyway I`m marking this topic as "Not planned". As many people suggest you, all this can be very simply done by Custom Screen system (ok not so simply but for example skin from Gynta is nice example that can be simply modified).

Current Locus panel contain all main buttons you may quickly need. If you don`t like them, hide them. If you don`t like main map screen, play with Custom Screens

OK, questions resolved, custom screen toolbar can be hidden. I withdraw my original suggestion RE custom screen toolbar. Thanks!

Now that I know that custom screen toolbar can be hidden I see that I can get what I want with a custom screen.

I still think it would be good to replace top panel with a pop-up menu as I originally proposed, but if I`m the only one who thinks so I wouldn`t expect you to implement it, Menion.

Thanks to all for the help.
