Storage on external SD card. How?

Volker Helmers shared this question 6 years ago

Hi,

I purchased and installed the pro version!

During installation I was asked to confirm GPS and other data access. So far so good. I was also asked to confirm storage place for maps in external SD card. I confirmed. However, after downloading the first map, I realized it was NOT stored on SD card, but in the memory of the phone (Sony Xperia M5 with Android 6.0).

Now the map (Italy) occupies more than 1 GB of my precious memory. That was not the plan!

How can I transfer the map file to external SD card? Any ideas?

In the phone there is a feature to transfer files from internal memory to external SD card, but only for music, videos and picture files. :(

Hi Volker,

it depends what kind of map you downloaded - raster or vector? Instructions are here: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=de:manual:faq:how_to_maps_sdcard

EDIT: before I sent the message Wolfgang was quicker :) Thanks @balloni55!

Hey, balloni and Hi Michal,

that sounds good, thank you very much!

For the moment, I'll leave my map (the first one I downloaded) in the internal memory. Reason is I'm going to use Locus next week for a hiking tour and presently everything is working fine. :-)

Never change a winning team, you know. ;-)

Later, when I'm back from the tour, I'll try your solution. Hope everything will be fine.

Anyway, I'll report back.

It 's not so complicated as it seems and there's a lot of time till next week for testing :)

OK, Michal, you were right, it was not complicated.

Anyway, I did move the map files to SD card now (after my hiking trip!) I also re-defined the path in Locus settings. So far so good. But now I have a big drawback: I re-opend Locus, but the maps came up in a completely different appearance. Everything is kind of pale. The colours are different, the contrast is not good. Roads are yellow, but hiking trails can hardly be distinguished. Before, they showed in a clear red, but now, after moving the maps to SD card, they are in a pale grey, or only as a dotted line, kind of blurry, and very hard to distinguish.

How can that be? I mean, at least I just MOVED the files in the new directory. I didn't change them. Here are the two file names:

italy.osm.db - 397,1 MB and

italy.osm.map - 1,0 GB

I attach a screenshot of the "new" map. Unfortunately, I haven't got the old version anymore, but believe me, it was much better. (BTW the blue line is a track, downloaded and imported in Locus map).

You moved the map themes to the SD card ? They are responsible for visualization. You can also choose different themes.

http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_locusmaps

You can change the language for Help in the upper left corner of the page.

Section: Map Themes (DE: Karten Themen http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_locusmaps#map_themes)

You can get more topics on the Internet. Openandromap. Or search in the formum for Hilo

Hi Wolker,

there is another map on the screenshot - it looks like an online OSM map. Go to Menu > Maps > Offline tab, open Europe folder and tap Italy.

@freischneider

Map theme is set to "hiking and cycling" (Wandern und Radfahren). I can change themes, but that doesn't solve the problem. Map themes can be selected in the normal way. I did not specifically "move" them to SD card.

@Micha

No, it's not an online map. It is the original offline vector map, downloaded from Locus. There is only this one in my Maps/Europe folder. I have no other maps.

Still very confusing that colours have changed, hiking trails are not in red anymore etc .

Wolker, could you please tap the topbar of you Locus main screen and select "Map" and make another screenshot of the same area? Thanks

Hi Michal, Thank you.

OK, here we go: new screenshot.

Volker, have a thorough look at your two screenshots - do you still claim it's the same map? At least, look at the map attribution - in the first case it's Thunderforest, which is a server with online OSM map tiles. The second one is just Openstreetmap as the source of data, which is used for rendering LoMaps. The map drawing and colors are LoMaps in the second case... so where's the trouble?

Hi Michal,

sorry, but yes, both screenshots are from the same map. I never loaded any other map. Only this only one: Europe/Italy vector map from Locus maps.

I don't know where Thunderforest came from in the first place. Very confusing.

In the second screenshot, colours and markings appear in better focus, that's right. The trouble still is, that the colours have changed, hiking trails are not in red (as before), some markings of trails are missing (Kirchsteig, Besinnungsweg).

Map theme is set to "hike and bike", so the hiking trails should be marked more clearly, right?

Actually, before moving the map to SD card, the whole appearance was much better.

Volker, go to the map theme switch, tap the hike&bike theme - a new menu appears - check if marked hiking trails are selected

Dear Michal,

yes, I checked that already before. All four options have check marks:

Radwege (bike trails)

MTB trails

Wanderwege (hiking trails)

Essen & Trinken (food and drink)

One more thing:

Actually, when I switch on / switch off the check marks at "Hiking trails" there is no difference to be seen on the map. There are trails (e.g. dotted lines) but they are not marked red when check marked "ON".

Only MTB trails are shown in magenta when check marked "ON". And in "OFF" the magenta colour disappears.

Unfortunately, I'm not a moutain biker. ;-)

Strange.....

Wolker, LoMaps are rendered from OSM data - when the OSM dataset doesn't contain marked hiking paths, they are not displayed on screen - move your map to some other place than Mittelstrich and you'll see there are marked hiking paths that can be switched on/off in map theme switch.

Oops! Michal, you're right. In that section of the map (my screenshot) there seem to be no designated hiking trails. I followed your advice and enlarged the scale - and yes, there are marked hiking trails in other parts of the map. - Sorry, I should have checked that myself before. - So, we can close this thread - and I'll have to live with the changed colours. ;-)

Anyway, thank you very much for your help - and also for your patience!

Hi Volker,

no problem :) When you are not sure about the accuracy of LoMaps, refer to other OSM sources that display the same content, e.g. https://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/#?map=14!46.466!11.5464. OSM data are quite good in Austria or Germany for instance but in Italy it's a bit worse. Enjoy Locus!
