zoom in/out several levels at once

stebu shared this idea 10 years ago
Completed

Very often I need to see a bigger picture e.g. to locate geocaches in a rural area.

Once I see a geocache I need to zoom in several levels to see the details.

Zooming one level at a time is slow!

So I need a way to zoom several levels at once.

One solution would be to use long click on +/- buttons to "jump" in or out a predefined number of levels. The number of levels could even be configurable (config.cfg)

This idea has my support. We already discuss this on other place and I agree, that some better way for a fast zoom should be very usable

a config.cfg file is absolute not user-friendly...

...but i like it ;D

better config.cfg parameter than fixed

hmm so what about something like this

That looks nice but how to activate it?

I would expect such a kind of little triangle in the lower right of the button which I can activate by long press and choose a step size.

And what about sync with others (Google Maps, Mapy.cz etc.). Doubleclick and hold anywhere activates zooming just by moving finger up or down in realtime.

What about to allow exchange zoom buttons by another fuction? E. g. with hw buttons for zooming activated they have no sense. I think all the buttons should be reconfigurable.

Look on new mapy.cz - they did really well centering when the position is outside the screen.

I know, you`re right.

This feature has some problems in current version. It was just too fast step. I`ll try to think more about and create to next version some better working solution.

About configurable bottom panel ... best should be completely remove this panel :) anyway as I wrote, I`ll think about it

btw. method of zoom you talk about is already here https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/top...

Yes, best panel is NO panel:) Mapy.cz with their 3 buttons is optimal.

They could also remove the top bar with sign mapy.cz – everybody recognize it is a map and copyright is at the bottom:) - and I would call it ideal.

it works great for me

It works great, really appreciate it. Makes work with Locus much faster.

But I have doubts regarding design:

1) I would like to see the currently selected zoom level on the slider

2) A white slider and dark panels. This doesn`t look nice. Please decide to either go for a light theme or a dark theme or better offer both as many apps do it (see also https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/top...) but do not mix them.

all lucky people with Android 4.1.2+ should enjoy this feature, rest has to wait :)

Anyway I`m still not sure about this. Some like it, some not. Design is one side, but usability is second.

I`ve just finished this feature https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/top... which is an another way for zoom. It`s not so fast, but also very usable.

Has this feature really sense? And also is this solution really fast? because there is need some time to display this popup and also some time to slide and to hide. On other side it allow to "choose" zoom level manually and return back to previous almost immediately ... I`m still little bit confused

already wrote my perspective, can again confirm it.

Fine, I`ll keep it in my mind ...

meanwhile I`ll try attempt for some public discussion about specific topic. If it will be successful, I`ll try it more often.

Nice, just improve design (suggestions below)

below what?

ah I firstly had this poll on old forum, but then I decided to put it on homepage, ehm and this is result :) ... so below means "Suggestions on GetSatisfaction"

(I cannot change it now)

yes - grey is better then white

It seems a full list of map zoom 00-22 is too much.

maybe max zoom - current zoom - min zomm ?

photo

why not just print the number of the zoom level at the upper end of the bar?

photo

While I agree with having an indication of zoom level would be nice,

This is anyhow a GREAT feature and works well! Thanjs!

photo

yes, ok but why is lowest zoom 8? Should be 0 instead according to definition of zoom levels.

photo

my "demomap" has only zoom 8-17 ;)

and the old zoomlevel was 14

oki, seems that main question - keep this feature or not is also not clear. Mainly because gynta vote for "remove it, it do not have any sense" http://www.locusmap.eu/system_fast_zoom/ :)

anyway if I decide to keep this feature, about color and zoom indicator, I have better idea now. But what about place?

It starts with question - "Why you use this feature?" - to zoom out, look on map while this popup is still visible and then zoom back to old zoom? Because then make sense to keep this popup window on side, not to disturb on map. Otherwise it doesn`t matter and window should be in the middle of map as now (it`s partially on side, but not most)

My point was. There are more important task to do.

It was difficult to vote.

Leave it? Yes - right now

It waste your time? Yes

Nice gimmick? Yes

Improve it? Yes - later

Understand

this was anyway not a too complicated task and I also felt a need for some quick zooming

So latest improvements

question for me remain just a size and position. But this will show time ...

Stebu, is this usable solution for you, or you still think that zoom by defined number of levels on long click is much better then this?

Menion, from the handling point of view this is still as the first approach, right?

Don`t know if this is possible:

Long press + or - which then lets these buttons temporarily be replaced by the horizontal ruler as long as I leave my finger on the ruler. After removing the finger the slider is again replaced by + and - buttons.

It seems that Locus on Android 2.3.6 just crashes when trying to long-press zoom buttons.... (Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000)

photo

Vitalii, please read few lines above where Menion wrote that it`s currently only working for 4.1.2+.

Hi Menion!

This works very well for me. If you release this with zoom level number displayed, I`m happy to consider my proposal implemented with this.

photo

tommi, I understand if it just did not work, but not crash :)

photo

I guess Menion will fix it, simply don`t long press the zoom buttons until then, please.

photo
0

yes, it`s still same approach.

I think everything is possible, it just depend on time :). What you ask seems to be quite a complicated, sorry.

Then it would not be hidden by the thumb :)

It`s quite new so I can only guess what I use it for ;-) Mainly zoom out, move far away (often >500km), zoom in there or call the weather forecast. Seldom to get an overview, so zoom out without changing map center and zoom in again, because 1 finger zoom is much nicer for that as I can zoom in & out as long as I hold my thumb tapped.

photo

yes, one-finger zoom is nicer, on second side it`s not solution on this problem. Task was to create a quick zoom. I wanted to follow Google style (which in this case has sense) so one-finger zoom isn`t so fast as this method.

Anyway it`s quite hidden, so I`m sure it do not disturb if anyone do not want to use this
