TIME TO ARRIVAL at the cursor - Draw it below or above guiding line

elmuSSo shared this idea 12 years ago
Completed

It would be cool to see `time to arrival` instead `bearing` in "Guide On" and "Line to GPS" lines. I don`t need bearing, but time to arrival would be really useful. Instead of looking at time rings, user will have a chance to see predicted time which is left to arrive at the target point (cursor point). Of course the perfect situation would be to make it configurable. User would have a chance to choose which information he wants to see at the end of line.

Remember: Time to arrival would be showed also when there is no Guide On activated. In this case, Time to arrival would be showing the time to arrive at the cursor position.

Since Locus version 2.20.0, Locus has two new parameters in config.cfg

  1. map_items_line_to_gps_value_above
  2. map_items_line_to_gps_value_below

Possible values are now defined in header as:

values above/below lines

nothing: '0', distance: '1', bearing: '2', ETA: '3', elevation: '4'

No one needs an ETA for every pixel on a map.

Instead of:

1. finding desired place on the map,

2. long clicking on it,

3. clicking on the cloud with it`s address,

4. clicking the icon to open submenu

5. clicking Guide On

sometimes 6: clicking on the top panel to change the mode to Guiding (especially that I`m always using Track record panel option)

7. read TIME TO ARRIVAL from there

You will be able to:

1. point to the desired point on the map

2. read TIME TO ARRIVAL from below of guiding line

What if you have many points to check periodically ( because you are going through several points ) ? The first current method is overkill.

You are wrong! This whole procedure is too long to be made during flight for example...while just scrolling will be faster. I`m a pilot and this would be a really interesting feature in order to provide the control towers a real estimate!

Would be interesting to allow more customizable informations to the "Line to GPS" such as the estimated time to reach the point (ex. 10:20h) under the cross cursor to let pilots know immediately estimated time for ATC requests.

Thank You:)

Hopefully our wonderful developer will put this new feature :)

Menion, no chances?

I completely agree on this one. Bearing is not important at all to me... or to anybody else who simply follows trails through mountains. We arent all boaters or pilots or hike through trackless forests. Furthermore, we have a line on screen already that indicates the angle.

Much more useful (for me) would be the VERTICAL distance to the destination, ie the meters that I still have to climb. But Locus doesnt really do much with altitudes yet, unfortunately.

Anyway... make it configurable in the config file and we ll all be happy :-).

Happy to hear that. And vertical distance is also very interesting idea.

Too bad menion lives in a flat place of this world and thus doesnt really give much priority to anything altitude related :-).

Anyway... vertical distance when guiding to a point is very simple of course. Vertical distance when guiding along a track needs a little math to calculate. And maybe actually two values to choose from:

amount to climb to next hill

amount to climb to end of track

Its not rocket science to figure out these values though, so there is still hope :-).

Gynta, come on. Please help me with this idea. It is so simple, it hides here for one year now, and it is still not recognised. At least comment it and please give me your opinion.

So we have a deal now:

you post (bump up) and vote in this topic: https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/top...

..and i vote here ;D

you`re funny guys :) btw. isn`t route planning already implemented? "add new route & measure" works in this way

6 votes after an year isn`t too much. On second side this seems to be tiny work compare to other tasks .. I`ll tomorrow read this topic and look what I can do with this ...

Really happy to hear that. Thanks!

And thanks to Gynta:)

so something like this may be useful?

photo

Yes, useful but it should offer possiblity to tick more than one, no radio button but tick boxes.

Menion, it looks promising! But, Tommi is right, I don`t want to sacrifice Distance to get Time to target. I need both of them, so checkboxes would be perfect.

photo

I hope there is no need to sacrifice any value. There are two places to define as you may see on first screen - "place above line" and "place below line". Both has same list of options

My apology. You are right, I didn`t realise that. In this case - your method is perfect!

Thank you thank you thank you! And I have no idea why altitude-related topics dont get any votes here. There cant be ONLY flatlanders in here can there?

Unfortunately. Menion, your implementation missed the most important part of the idea.

If you read the idea carefully, it says: "Remember: Time to arrival would be showed also when there is no Guide On activated. In this case, Time to arrival would be showing the time to arrive at the cursor position. "

To be honest, my idea was to have Time to arrival at a cursor - always turned on, but not when centered on a GPS position.

When I`m traveling by train, I want often to check how long it will take to the first station (not my final guidance target). So I`m dreaming of just pointing at that station with a cursor to see Time to arrival there (at a cursor).

ah, I though that idea was just to "Guiding line", sorry.

So topic is not yet implemented :)

I think that was also my mistake, because at the time I was writing the idea, I mismatched Line to GPS with Guiding line

It looks if Draw above/below guiding line is what I want but I don`t see it when I have Guide On activated to a POI, just when I Guide On a track. Please add same info for Guide On to POI.

I think this is my oldest and still really-needed feature. And it is sad it was misunderstood and I lost my proper moment for its proper implementation.

Menion, please, is there a chance to consider it again? Now in a proper form?

funny...

I voted again :)

I think quite a long, where to place settings for this. It's usually the worst ...

And most simple solution for now, is our favorite overcomplicated config.cfg file.

So in next version will be two new parameters in config.cfg

  1. map_items_line_to_gps_value_above
  2. map_items_line_to_gps_value_below

Where possible values are now defined in header as:

values above/below lines

nothing: '0', distance: '1', bearing: '2', ETA: '3', elevation: '4'

Hi Menion.

For elevation '4', may I ask to display the elevation value on screen with '+' sign for uphill and '-' sign for downhill? Currently '-' sign is shown for uphill(it's unnatural) and no '+' sign. If 'right-up-arrow' and 'right-down-arrow' character is available, it may be better.

I know it's a off topic but related with the parameters in config.cfg.

Thanks in advance.

Ah problem was that I computed distance/bearing/elevation from map center > to > GPS. It should be opposite, because you stand on GPS location and you are checking places around with "Map center". So in next version it will be opposite, so signs will be correct. (and with '+' in case of possitive value)

thank you! very fast fix as usual :)
