Downloads of vector maps have to be started from scratch due to network failure and may consume additional credit

moravcovi.ova shared this problem 11 years ago
Solved

Hello, unlike "pausing" the download, when the WiFi gets disconnected from the AP in current version of Locus, all already downloaded vector map data gets lost and one has to restart the download from scratch.

Since there is already a pre-existing framework for continuing the downloads, the correct solution should be to keep the already downloaded part and continue with the download (unless a new version of the map has been uploaded, but I think it has to be already solved with the Pause/resume code).

I have already lost at least 150 MB of the credit because of this behaviour.

Hi,

I`ll also try in english :)

I`ll check mentioned problems with missing auto-pause when connection is lost. This is probably missing, you`re correct.

Anyway reducing credit after should not happen. Credit is reduced only in the moment, you completely download map and Locus validate that map has correct downloaded size. Are you sure that Locus reduced your credit?

I`ll anyway check it, thanks for report

Hi, I am NOT 100% sure for that, I thought that this was the way downloads worked (paying per MB of transmitted data because of your Amazon servers, as was the original idea), but I will try to recalculate the amount.

OK, the problem is it`s hard to check because I don`t know the sizes of previous transfers and the displayed credit is rounded to 100MB, so after checking it may be both ways, but you are probably right, sorry for the assumption.

If you do it this way (only reducing the credit once the transfer has finished), then the fix should reduce your expenses for traffic anyway.

If your credit will be reduced for not completely downloaded map, let me know, it`s an issue! We pay all transmitted data anyway you pay a small amount above what I pay for amazon and also not everyone downloaded exactly all what they purchase, so I count with some losses.

Anyway I`m taking this as an issue report. I plan improvements in download mechanism, because most crash reports I receive are just during vector maps downloading.

So let me know if your credit will be reduce if should not be and I`m writting into TODO list - "correct handling of download when internet connection is interrupted"

No you are right the download must be completed to reduce the credit.

1. I have tested this by downloading ~102MB of Austria and the credit remained the same as before (1,2GB), if there was a reduction for potential download, it would have been 1,1GB, but it was not.

2. Next I have downloaded the whole Austria (224 MB) and once the unzipping stopped and it was possible to check - please note, that Android has shown the "Application is not responding message" twice during the unzipping - the credit dropped to 1000MB as it should.

Sorry for the false alarm regarding the credit.

Last thing, is it possible to change the topic name to not confuse other people? There should have been originaly and may consume..., but since it has been solved, everything from the and ... in the label can be removed. Unfortunately I can edit only the additional posts, not the original one :-(
