Nothing displayed when opening a gpx for viewing from gmail app in Android

Hi, I very much like locus Map v 3.10.3) but I want a very simple method for viewing gpx files that have been shared with me.

The simplest method seems to be to receive a gpx by email and to press on the attachment in gmail app. At this point I get the Android "Complete Action using" dialog and for me it lists: Orux Maps, Maverick and now Locus Maps. When I select Locus Map, the app is launched but the gpx file that I was sent is not displayed. Instead Locus Map displays whatever track has previously been displayed.

Good day James,

I'm just testing method you describe (by default Google Mail application) and it works correctly for me on Android 5.1. Are you using official GMail application or any other? Also is your GPX file valid, did you tried it to import/display directly? Maybe you may attach your gpx file here, so I may test it.

Yes - am using the default gmail app on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1Try this gpx. Displayed ok when importing manually as a local file for display only. Would not display when Long Pressing from gmail app. if I go into My Files (file manager) the share function does not list Locus. If I select an "Open With" app that I have just found then it will switch to Locus and display the gpx.

The above comment should have a file attached but it doesn't seem to want to upload. Where can I email it?

Hello James,

I'm just testing it with colleagues on four different devices and on all of them it works correctly. I'll try it later at home on older Motorola Xoom device also with 4.1 tablet, but I'm worried it will be some temporary problem on your device. Because of rarity of this issue and ability to do it by other method, I won't be able to help here (in case it will work also on mentioned Xoom device).

Ok - that's wierd - No probs - thanks for checking. I am delighted to hear that it has been designed to work as I expected it to. let me know whether it also works on the Xoom.

I'm sorry James. I've tested it on Android 4.1.2 with GMail application version 4.2.2 and it just works as expected - tap on file display Locus import dialog.

So I have no idea how to simply help here. Usually solution is creating a log right after some problem happen by this method: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:faq:how_to_create_debug_log . I'm worried it won't help here as it is not a typical crash of application. But if you have a time, you may try it ...

OK I haven't previouslyhad to debug Andriod like that. Even though I am running 4.12, and developer options is enables, the I do not have the option to "Take Bug Report". So I sent have you a catlog but I suspect I need to root the device before that will work and I am reluctant to to that on this device.

That said, I am please to report that I have now made some progress and have now got it to work. Basically, all my testing so far has been with Locus already running in the background. When I closed Locus from the task manager and then went to gmail it launch Locus and immediately displayed the gpx as I want it too. This may be why you have not been seeing the same issue. If you send another gpx to your email and open that first with this method and then open a second with this method without closing Locus between times, does it open the second for viewing as you would expect? For me, this fails (silently) every time.

Hello James,

hmm thanks for testing, you pointed me on interesting news for me. I was able to simulate this problem once, twice, but it is quite random. Anyway problem is, from developer points of view, describe here: http://stackoverflow.com/a/27161685/836138 and I pointed to last answer.

I personally do not use such feature often so I never noticed any problems. Unfortunately I have no idea why it sometimes works for me and sometimes not.

As NSouth mentioned in his last post, I may now only do same solution - notify user to close Locus and try to open attachment again. Sorry to say this ...
