Snail trail for live tracking ( users trails )

Michal shared this idea 7 years ago
Completed

Would be great if the live tracking was connecting updates into a trail. This way you can see where someone was, which way travelled.

Hi

I also think that this opportunity will increase Live tracking's usability

What about such variants?:

To show a track of selected user/all users for the last period of time

Ideally, to see other user's track that was recorded from moment when this user (not me) started Live tracking.

To add setting "Allow to see my track"

If this functionality is impossible or complicated for development - display arrow from user's label for showing current direction and speed.

After some testing I'm very happy with buddy tracking. Great(!) feature!

And yes, seeing the track of my buddy (buddies) or at least the latest part (some points) would be VERY useful.

Especially when tracking several buddies.

One buddy you can keep in focus and estimate his/her track. But with several buddies this becomes impossible. I know where they are right now but not where they are moving....

Would appreciate that very, too!

Yes, this would enable more control over my lonely bike trips for my wife!

The requested upgrade is similar to the current behavior of GPSies's live tracking website.

They are similar, but I think these two methods have slightly different goals.

Live tracking is good for quick coordination when traveling a group of people on the route. By this reason it's enough to show only last part of a track.

GPSies website is more suitable for viewing and analyzing recorded tracks. They are not convenient to use in motion and with a slow internet.

Hello,

this feature has been released in our latest beta version, so it would be really great if you could test it and write some feedback if you like (beta version testing instructions).

The snail trail function is currently quite simple and is currently supported only in Locus Map (web live tracking does not display snail trails at the moment). Locus Map now automatically displays the last 10 minutes of movement for each user as a simple non-selectable track. The tracks are only stored locally on the phone, so the tracks start to add up slowly up to 10 minutes which is currently a fixed constant.

And that is really it for now, so please tell us if you find this helpful and what you would like to customize or improve.

Hello,

the basic "snail trail" function for live tracking as described in my previous comment is now available in the latest Locus Map version. I am closing this issue because there hasn't been any feedback yet and the function seems to be working. If there are any problems or improvement suggestions feel free to start new problem/topic regarding this issue.

Sorry to be so late for a comment. But only today I used LT to look for someone else, usually I am the one under control 😎

Today I reported a crash of the pro last version while zooming in during LT. The snail trail is a good tool, I like it and works perfectly.

IMHO the own icon must be the same I did set up 🐷 and not the generic black and white.

I'm sorry to see that just few users use LT it is a useful feature that grant more safety.

Hello Lorenzo,

thank you for testing the feature, I am glad you find it usable.

Regarding the bug, you probably just sent the report to Google Play after the crash, right? You didn't by any chance also created a bug report as described in here? Is the crash happening repeatedly or it was just a one time thing?

Also could you please tell me more about the problem with icons? For each user you should see the icon they have chosen (though currently the choice is limited to the predefined set of icons, custom avatar not yet supported). If this doesn't work, then it is probably also a bug.

Thank you,

Milan

One time, but I enabled the developer option to give you a report next time, if it will happens in future.

For the icon see attached screenshots. 1) pig setting 2) the way I'm represented on my own phone. On the others phone there is the pig, on mine the black and white icon.

Ok, thanks, seems like a bug, I will look into it.

It definitely is not a bug but developers intent. No matter what symbol you set for the active profile, icon visible on the map will be always same - unique. If any other user close to you select the same icon, you will still simply recognize your icon.

Hi,

Great that you realized this feature.

But I would find it much more useful if the visibility of your buddies track (last 10min) would be better visible. Best case would be to configure transparency on your own...

I agree, I think that an arrow pointing from first point to second and so on should be a good idea.

Hello,

thank you for the feedback. Noted, customization of the "snail trail" would be welcome.

Or increasing the transparency with distance from current position.

Beside connecting the successive positions, a nice feature would be to have some information when clicking on a point (time, date, distance from start along track, elevation...). Looking at similar apps like locatoweb, gpsies, real-time gps tracker, none of them are fully satisfying.

Of all the live trackers (and I believe I have tried all of them), I find Route Tracker Pro form rahh.co to be the best by far. Unfortunately, it is only available on IOS and the developer has no intention of porting it to Android. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/raah-tracker/id525298475?mt=8

The live track has various features which enable the viewer to gain a very good understanding of the target's progress. I use it primarily so that my wife can follow my motorcycle journeys.

I think the various features would make an excellent example for Locus to consider.

Thanks for the tips, this extended functionality and full tracking history would definitely be nice. We have been actually discussing this feature at the office lately and we might give it a try now during Q3/2018.

Definitely good to know that there is someone who would use this kind of functionality :) Thanks

That's good news!

Additional features to consider:

- stop/pause and resume a track;

- add comment/picture to a given position;

- keep multiple tracks.

Just found a little known app that does it almost fully right on the essential features!

Hello,

thanks for the tip. We are currently thinking how to extend our live track tracking/logging functionality and we are definitely planning to come up with some more featured solution than current "snail-trail" functionality.

Any news on the improved Live Tracking ? ;-)

Hello,

there haven't been significant functional changes since the completion of this idea. We are launching completely new Live Tracking web this week though.

Best regards

This topic is marked Completed but I only see my single current position on the live tracking web page, not a snail trail?

Hello Andrew,

you are correct, the snail trail feature is implemented only locally in Locus Map for now. Web client does not have this feature yet, sorry.

Best regards

Milan
