3D compass Monterra and smartphones (as an idea)

Already posted in "Questions" but the "Answer" did not bring any solution.

Therefore as an "Idea":

The Monterra has a 3D compass. My smartphone too.

The Locus compass does not support manual nor automatic use of a 3D compass: in vertical position, the arrows on maps and compass move in all directions continuously and is more of a burden than a help.

Someone here suggested to have a possibility to switch to vertical position support for the compass when mounted in a car. But for handheld situations (hiking, geocaching,...) there should be an automatic switch in 3D because it is of no use to have to switch between the positions via a menu setting or button: that is not an option while on the trail.
