Make the Bottom Panel more customisable

Brody Payne shared this idea 10 years ago

I would like to be able to hide the lock screen button and zoom buttons but retain the locate button.

Alternative is to allow place bottom buttons to functions panel.

I would allow even a same customization as other menus.

I don't use any of those button often. I zoom with hardware buttons, locking is not necessary and I don't use the button to show direction often.

So for me is this panel just wasted space which could be used for the map.

Hopefully it is possible to auto-hide it.

I have only "sound volume" and "on-off" buttons" What hardware buttons do you talk about ?

Menu - settings - map controls and panels - use hardware buttons

There are currently various and may means to customize the buttons around the 4 edges of the screen. Some buttons are customized by long-tap then select the default (along top and bottom edges), some buttons are customized via Menu > More > Show/hide. The number of buttons along the top edge is set in another place Menu > Settings > Map - controls > Buttons at top. Some buttons can't be changed (zoom in/ out). Some people ask for an Exit button. Everyone likes something different, everything is a compromise.

What if there was a button manager mode where every position around the edge of the screen could be assigned a button, or no button, and some "buttons" may be wider such as the "info" at the top/left where any of map name/ GPS coord/ battery/ date-time can be set. One user may hide every button because small phone - his/ her choice. Another user may use every possible position around the edge for as many buttons as possible because large tablet. Another user may have buttons just on one edge. One user could have the zoom in/ out buttons on the right side. One user (as discussed in topic for special Exit button) could add this into position of their choosing.

From another topic - a while ago people debated whether the new Zoom In/Out buttons were better or worse. Of course - some thought better, some thought worse. So in this new scheme the user is free to decide which style of zoom button they like - from the button manager they select from the list of all buttons - there could be four items in the list - Zoom Out Simple, Zoom Out With Slider, Zoom In Simple, Zoom In With Slider.

Don't forget "return to factory settings". Otherwise discussions on this forum will be difficult.

ALL functions should be available as button ANYwhere. Of course the default can be the status quo, so nobody is surprised or concerned. But users can adapt to their own priorities. All the ingredience exist in Locus already. Well, except a "double width" switch for buttons (currently +/- zoom), which is a piece of cake.

I hate that button because I keep hitting it by accident. Anywhere other than the current location would have me hitting it, and spewing profanities, much more often.

If implemented, it should be entirely optional.

(I've long ago asked for a second press of that button to undo your transcontinental shift - a disaster when trip planning - but haven't heard back yet.)

This would be great! Either the possibility to customize the bottom panel or add the "current location" button to the functions panel.

yeah, still haven`t given up hope... drives me mad trying to hit that button with gloves on...

After 2 months of everyday use I can say that this is one of the most wanted features.

1. Never used zoom buttons, double tap+hold works perfectly even in gloves and with protection case in wet conditions.

2. Don't really need screen lock/lens button in the most reachable and convenient place on the screen.

3. I'd rather have the Location button in that bottom right corner, even though I use the phone with my left hand predominantly. Because I have the Map content left panel enabled, I keep hitting it instead of the Location button in field situations.

4. I have the View sight always on, so it's more of an option than an on/off function for me.

5. I use a big 5,5" screen phone for Locus (as lot's of users do, I assume) and bottom of the screen is far more reachable and useful than the top. So it would be super nice to be able to put the most used functions in the bottom panel instead of those zoom buttons.

Good day guys,

just to give you small idea what will probably come this year 2018: layout used in new Route planner & track recording screens will be with some modifications used also in main application map screen. Of course with some possible customizations as is common in Locus Map.

That is great news, Menion. Especially love the Map rotation merged with Location button. Also, maybe, consider this idea. http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/multifunction-show-view-button

I agree with standalone floating locate button, but for such a design the GMaps-like behaviour would be more logical, ie. onpress locate button, Locus centers map to position and keeps center snapped to it till map is manually moved. The button colouring also should indicate if map is snapped to GPS or free position.

For button mode inside bottom toolbar, Locus-like behaviour is better.

To me, it seems to be solved in v4

  • Bottom bar can be customized in the same way as side panel (now, it's one function list, you just choose where one panel ends and the other starts)
  • locate button is extracted from buttom panel and knows short tap & long tap & toggling between modes, so Bucky Kid's agim is reached just using a slightly different approach

Do you agree and we can close?

Thank you for bringing this topic up. And fully agree, that with the new Locus Map 4 bottom panel, most of the customization needs are covered.
