No altitude correction with external BT GPS receiver

Torsten Bieder shared this problem 8 years ago
Solved

I have connected an external Bluetooth GPS receiver (Fortuna Clip-on) with Locus Map Pro. Although the receiver is about 10 years old its more precise than the internal GPS modul of my new smartphone (Wiko Lenny 2). Everything works fine but the external GPS receiver transmits the wrong altitude (about 50m more than reality). Unfortunately the altitude correction of Locus Maps Pro does not work with the external GPS receiver. Independent which mode or value I use for the altitude correction, it is not applied the altitude value which is displayed on GPS screen. Is this a bug?

The altitude correction works only with the internal GPS modul as expected ...

Good day Torsten,

this is a surprise for me. As I'm checking Locus source code, this should work as expected.

May you please in Locus settings > GPS > Recorn NMEA enable this settings (Always) and then go out for a short trip (few metres is enough, just to record few points). Locus then creates file with received NMEA messages (information from your BT device) into Locus/data/nmea directory. Send me this file and I'll try to simulate same problem. Thanks.

Many thanks for your quick action. I made the nmea-log and attached it (I don't see the attachment after selecting it, hopefully it reached you...). I tried to find out a bit more about the problem on my own and tested several settings. Maybe it was an accident but one time a saw a corrected altitude on the satellite screen by using my external GPS. Afterwards it was not corrected anymore all day long (I used altitude correction with Offset manual correction with -120.0 as value to be sure). Because of raining the whole day I was not able to compare the behaviour with the internal GPS of the smartphone. But maybe there is a general problem by applying the altitude correction independent of the GPS data source.

Many thanks for your support and developing this great app!

Hello,

I left my comment here: http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/no-altitude-correction-with-external-bt-gps-receiver#comment-23686

But I'm not sure if you have received the attachment. Therefore I sent you as eMail attachment here.

Many thanks

Torsten

Hello Torsten,

thank you, this helped. I though that most of GPS units already return altitude with offset values, but I was wrong.

Because I do not want to change how it works now to all people automatically, in "Offset" tab of Altitude manager will be in next version new checkbox - "Enable also for Bluetooth GPS". So when you enable it, defined settings for offset will be applied also on location from Bluetooth GPS.

Thank you for your report.
