Pebble e-paper watch companion-app to Locus

Gathering feedback

I`ve just backed the Pebble e-paper watch on Kickstarter, and reckon it could be an awesome GPS navigation & geocaching aid for smart-phone users.

Just imagine you`ve setup a waypoint (or you`re heading to the closest geocache), and you`ve stashed the phone in the top pocket of your rucksack (probably connected to an extended battery). The Pebble on your wrist would then be able to show a compass (based on GPS movement not magnetic), with direction arrow and distance to waypoint (or geocache).

I`m sure there are lots of other ideas can come up with data they`d like to see from Locus pushed through to the app on the watch.

Here`s one of the concept screens they`ve thought about for running.

Nice idea. These functions would be really nice. I also pre-ordered this pebble watch.

There are news updates:

The watch has now a magnetometer. So a magnetic compass will work. This would be optimal to have the direction, while you are make a guide on on a waypoint.

Other updates you can read here:

Pebble starts shipping in Januar the 23rd. It would be nice, if this watch would be compatible with Locus.

Pebble pre-orders have started shipping!

Is nobody interested?

Sounds promising.

Now the SDK 2.0 with the Pebble App-Store is available. A small co-app that shows the direction and distance to a waypoint would be nice: https://blog.getpebble.com/2014/03/07/the-pebble-appstore-now-with-android-support-and-more-partners/

Here is an example how this works with c:geo: http://youtu.be/cyZ7th0ZMN0

It would be nice, if there would be a similar app for Locus.

Not only waypoint navigation would be nice, what about being able to control tracking (start, pause/resume, stop) and displaying different values (speed, pace, height, HR). I use Locus also for tracking my runs and rides and this would be a killer feature! :-)

Would like to see a GPX track that is loaded on your phone so you can follow it on your new bike trail or whatever :)

would be a realy nice feature..

With the new firmware 2.5 of the pebble and the new SDK the built in compass of the pebble is available for interesting apps: https://blog.getpebble.com/2014/09/18/fw-2-5/

There now is a app for pebble which is supported by locus. Bit not very integrated.

You have to share the gps coordinate and then the watch app calcualtes the distance from GPS data. So no data from locus is used.

It would be awesome when you turn on the guidance from a gps track the distance is shown in this app. But i dont know if locus or the app developer has to do this.

Maybe contact him? With c:geo this works better at the moment.

But I hate cgeo and like locus ;)

This developer has no time to develop this app at the moment, because he is writing his master thesis. It would be also nice, if this app could use the magnetometer for the compass function.

I like using the navigation pebble app with locus but I would love for some pebble integration especially for track recording. I just tried Maverick since it was in the Pebble appstore and Pebble My tracks doesn't work anymore. Surprisingly, Maverick doesn't even need a pebble app (doesn't occupy space on pebble). When you start track recording an additional watchface appears which displays time distance and speed. No controls just displays stats. Same is true for other apps like runkeeper and strava. Not sure but it might just be the way Maverick uses the notification and pebble has built in capabilities of displaying track stats. Love locus so much and just a little annoyed that I have to use another app for recording tracks just because it has some pebble support.

Bought a Pebble, but am a little confused, that Locus doesn't support Pebble. Mirroring a turn-by-turn navigation guidance on Pebble should be a standart option in Locus. I hope it will be.

I'm using the pebble since the beginning and love the navigation on the watch. So, locus is my favorite navigation-tool for hiking, biking, navigate in cities etc. . To use a navigation on the pebble i have to install another app. I hope in the near future there will be a solution to bring locus and pebble together.

Maybe support for the Pebble Time?: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/597507018/pebble-time-awesome-smartwatch-no-compromises

A new SDK with emulator is available.

I have found a nice co-app for Pebble, which also works with Locus: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.barees.android.skinkgps

  • You can send waypoints from Locus to this app and then you can navigate to this WP.
  • You see the satellites and the gps accuracy.
  • You can track a route.
  • You can also manage your whole waypoints. You can import GPX.
  • And you also have an trip computer.

Works so far really great. Such an an app I wished from Locus. But maybe there is an official support from Locus sometime?

A direct companion support or Locus native app would be really appreciated.

So compass-direction and speed (kp/h and nauticle miles) for boating purpose are my most important whishes :)

Additionally a navigation like this would be a cool feature.

The sinkgps-app in my eyes is not very user-friendly due to you can only send one specific waypoint out of locus.

What app is on the screenshot, you're linking to?

don't know, just google-pictured it :)

but here's a better example -> Nav Me for Android, but this works only for Google Navigation App.

Most important information are already shown on Locus navigation (turn left/right in X meters, time, distance). So i'd just convert this information to pebble-format. Additionally you could e.g. let the pebble vibrate once for turn left and twice for turn right signal.

Hi,

I make a simple addon for personal use, that show the track recording information on pebble smartwatch.

- recording time

- duration

- average speed

- actual altitude

- heart rate

Hi Zigzag, the link isnt working, whats the status of the app?

i think this would be a main reason for me to get a pebble.

Thanks
