"Unknown problem" when trying to export to Dropbox

Solved

Hi all- When I initially setup Locus Pro it linked perfectly to my Dropbox. Then, I believe through Dropbox itself, I denied permission for Locus to have access to my Dropbox. I don't recall specifically how that came up, but I believe Dropbox asked me whether I wanted Locus to have access, and I clicked "No" or "Deny". Now, I want to correct that mistake but I can't figure out how. When I try to, for example, export a track and I edit the Export Path, the Dropbox tab appears at the top of the screen but has an "Unknown problem" message. How can I fix this? Thanks in advance.

Hello Chris,

truth is, that I probably never tried answer "no" :). Anyway usually when some online service offer access to third party app like Locus, results of these questions are also stored directly in settings of your online service. So check dropbox settings in your web browsers. It should be on similar address: https://www.dropbox.com/account#security . At the bottom are "linked apps". Seems that Locus has there some problems with icons :). Let me know if this helps.

I also use dropbox a lot from Locus (for uploading backups), so I never click on 'No'. But I reckon the OAuth protocol is used and maybe the answer is here somewhere: https://www.dropbox.com/developers/reference/oauthguide.

Hey, thanks for your quick response. Yes, on my Dropbox Security page there are no linked apps listed, but I don't see a way to allow access for Locus Pro or any other app. I would really like to have Locus access only my Maps folder in Dropbox if that were possible. I also don't see any help tickets on the Dropbox page that provide any clarity on the issue. Thanks for checking on this.

Also-I tried opening Dropbox in a different browser (IE instead of Chrome) and I didn't see any difference with my options on the Security page.

Hmm I'm trying to simulate it and maybe I've got it.

Try to open Dropbox tab and in top toolbar is "logout" button. Do it and login again, it should work then.

Tried it but I get the same "Unknown problem" message. I just forwarded you the error code via email from the app. Thanks again

Hello Chris,

thanks for email. I'm anyway unable to find a real reason why this may happen. I've at least update Dropbox library to next version and also did small modifications in code, so now should be error message clearer (probably).

So please try next version and if result will be same, I'll need an log created by this method: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:faq:how_to_create_debug_log

Thanks and sorry for a troubles!

Will do.

As a small thanks for your responsiveness, I've given you a shout-out on the blog for my bicycle touring project (http://www.conversationswithus.com):

  • you may have assumed that you'll be fine with your smartphone navigation app (I did). You're right for the most part, but consider that most mapping apps, like Google, don't work in areas without cell service. If you really want to be prepared, get an app via which you can download map files, store them to your phone, and run your navigation entirely off of GPS signal alone. I use Locus PRO. The developer of that app has actually been very responsive and helpful in working with me to fix bugs and tune my setup. It can also record your tracks to look at later, and log other types of data some cyclists like to see. Apps like this work well but really take a while to get the hang of so download them weeks before your tour and practice with them lots on training rides.

IT WORKED! I can now upload to dropbox once again. Thanks so much for your help.

My next step is to get live tracking working. The online user manual for that service seems to be empty. My ideal would be to allow my family to ping my phone and find me from the internet even if my Locus app isn't running. This would avoid the battery drain associated with regular broadcasts of my location from my phone. Is there an easy way to do something like that?

I promise that's my last request, and I completely understand if you need to help other users instead of continuing to help me! Thanks for your work on the dropbox issue.

Hmm it now works? But I've not yet released a new version of Locus :). Funny.

So some changes you did helped to restore functionality, fine.

"Live tracking" in Locus is currently in phase, where You as an user, needs to create your own server side solution, to make it work. Which is little bit complicated. We wants to start work on own integrated solution for much easier usage of live tracking during next months, but it will take some time ...

Probably best options for now are

Maybe someone has also some suggestion, so feel free to add it here. So no better solution for now.

About reducing battery usage ... check "GPS auto-off" feature. Little bit complicated sometimes, but may helps a lot!, manual: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:settings:gps#internal_gps_auto-off

EDIT: I've just found a new topic with same question and even better answer from gynta, maybe it will be useful for you:http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/how-to-use-live-tracking
