Support for new MyMaps (Google Maps Engine)

aka_paulo shared this idea 10 years ago

Hello! My friend created a custom map on Google and shared it with me. I installed the Pro version of Locus and tried to download this map via Menu-More-MyMaps. The problem is that I can only see the customs maps created by me long time ago on Google. But I do not see the newly shared or even newly created by me maps. Probably, it`s all about new Google Maps Engine. But I bought Locus only for this purpose: I need to use custom Google maps offline. Please help. BR, Pavel

Hello Pavel,

I`m sorry to bring you bad news, but Locus currently handle only older "My Maps" system from Google, not a new "Maps Engine". This is something we plan to support, but due to a lot of work, it is not in current short-therm list.

If you just purchased Locus and really just because of this, simply write us on support.locus@asamm.com your order number and we will refund your order, it is not a problem.

Currently it is still possible to use the old My Maps functionality, but it seems that Google will shut that down in favour of the new system. I also hope Locus will support Maps Engine at least when My Maps is offline.

I expect this "shutdown" since they inform that My Maps ends. It was anyway two yeard before and service still works. Anyway even that here on forum seems to be no topic as a request for new Maps Engine, I want to add support for this, so it is planned.

Hi Menion, as a User from the first days I would like to support the request to add the new MyMaps. Thanks, Sven

Oki guys, I've changed this question to idea, so you may vote if you are interested.

As new google Maps PRO user I´ll join the request :-)

AFAIK the new MyMaps replacement requires 'Google Play Services' if the SDK is used at least.

This 'service' does more than handle maps; it will update itself, and any google app it chooses...silently, without user consent. This results in inexplicable new bugs (google 'google play services' 'battery drain' for one bug where google forced a new version of it's music app down everyone's throat, resulting in a globally synchronized 'wtf is draining my battery' issue). Beyond this, google 'upgrades' are frequently downgrades that remove functionality or implement UI refactoring (remember how nice the old Maps was?), and such behavior is an insecure blatant violation of privacy. For this reason, many do not wish to install such a 'service' on their device.

If support for the new api is implemented, please don't make Locus require it to run!

Don't worry. I have personally also bad feeling from Google Play services, so when any feature in Locus will need it, this feature will be optional and Google Play services won't be needed for basic function of Locus. I promise :)

I also need this feature with the new "Map Engine". Please make it happen.

Slightly off topic but I want to mention that I would be happy with any (free) online service to manage map data and be able to import/sync it with Locus.

In fact I think such a service could be better than Google Maps but unfortunately I haven't found such a service yet.

Hi since this week my maps is broken by google so I suggest to increase the priority of this request.

It's a pity the functionality is lost in locus.

It's time to join this request :-)

I used old My maps with Locus and now after Google "upgrade" to new MyMaps I miss this feature. Thanks for this

Google doesn't offer an API for new MyMaps...

Or am I wrong here?

Google just anounced, that they will shut down Maps Engine in 2016.

Check the notification when go to Maps Engine user page:

https://mapsengine.google.com/admin/

photo

hmm I'm always forwarded to this page https://www.google.com/work/mapsearth/ and there is no notification. They really wants to shut down this service? Crazy ... I'm checking there blog and Google+, but also no information...

hmm here at bottom: http://www.zdnet.com/article/google-maps-engine-quietly-coming-to-a-halt-as-sign-up-window-shutters/ - so it should mean "no custom maps"? Interesting

You can have custom maps on Google:

mymaps.google.com

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.m4b

But there's no API to access it. ;)

Ok guys, thanks for opening my eyes.

So if I understand correctly, older My Maps that were in Locus were removed few years ago and "new" Maps Engine ends next year together with API for access data. And remains only some, also called MyMaps, where is no way to access data, right? If so, this topic may be closed ...

You could implement the "wish" via https://developers.google.com/maps-engine/.

However this service will stop working in January 2016.

At the moment there is no long-time view for this "wish". So it might be better to close it. But expect new topics popping up, asking for support to read and write from/to the "new" MyMaps:

https://mymaps.google.com

Thanks understand.

Stability of features around "My own maps" from Google is quite bad. I can clearly remember how much time I spend on implementing old My Maps system (few weeks all together). After few months that My Maps will be removed. Nice.

Situation seems to be same here.

Looks like, that as usually is best create own solution. Hmm ..

Agree.

It might come very handy to manage your points and tracks on some desktop computer with bigger screen and fully working keyboard.

Hi.

Just to confirm that I was using up to a few months the my maps option in Locus to update the my maps in Google. It was something that I used until the api was discontinued by google. I since installed the My Maps Engine app by google to edit the maps.

Best regards,

Luis Franco

So based on above discussion, I have to say that this topic is "declined". Thanks to changes Google plan on year 2016, Google Maps Engine API will be completely disabled so there will be no method for developers to access your data.

Question is, are there any alternative solutions? Also what is main purpose why you wants to use this service?

photo

The main purpose for me is to plan business trips on the Google map

(airports, hotels, meeting places, etc.). Then - few clicks and I have

it in Locus...

Well, for me it's all about syncing with other devices, or even friends (but not the most important thing). This is described here: http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/cloud_map_and_data_storage_sync

photo
1

Yes I wanted to mention exactly this topic. It's very close from my point of view. To make "sync" possible, we need to create web server where will be stored in some clear database system all users points/tracks. And from there is only a small step to use some existing UI tool like Leaflet to allow edit of these points/tracks directly in web browser.

photo
1

Yes, that sounds good. Me personally I can do without edit in web browser, but I can imagine that feature will be appreciated by many.

One thing I would really love to see is that you could provide different logins on a folder basis. That way, I could sync my travel POIs and routes with my girlfriend while syncing mountain hikes with my hiking colleagues, using different logins/accounts.

Do you think that's reasonable or too much additional effort?

photo
1

A server for storing Data sounds good.

This should allow to combine functions the APP Glympse with showing tracks.

I´m searching for so long for an App that will shows a track AND shares location on that track....

photo
1

@Ingo: Because we currently have nothing done, hard to say. Usually when I start some new feature, I start with basics and based on user response, I improve this feature. And I believe that when we start with this huge part - sync - it will be same. So we will see :).

photo
1

Fair enough.

Anyway, perhaps we should tnow take this discussion where it started - I'll make a post in http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/cloud_map_and_data_storage_sync to bump that thread up...

Recently, google added My Maps support to their Google Maps app for Android. So may be they changed their plans about Maps Engine, or they designed some new API to access My Maps

photo

Hello,

unfortunately I'm not aware of any official announcement about some public, for longer time valid, API.

photo

Hello,

Is it, 3 years later possible to import them in locus maps?

photo

Good day Nico,

Google Maps Engine is deprecated for many years. I'm aware there is some simple tool for creating own maps from Google itself, but I'm sorry, this is currently not and very probably won't be, supported. Thanks for understanding.
