OS maps from Viewranger

I'm currently looking at Locus Maps as an alternative to Viewranger now that it's being wound down.

First impressions are favourable, but one thing I would like to be able to do is to use the OS maps that I bought in Viewranger in Locus Maps. I've bought a few of them and it would be a shame to have to pay for them all over again to use them in LM.

Is that possible?

Hi, no as they are proprietary, you didnt buy them from OS, they were bought from viewranger, so you will need to buy again

if you get locus gold, you get 50 coins per month free to put towards buying maps

personally i really like the lomaps, locus own for POI etc, and I like OSM for the colour scheme

Also john thorner maps are worth looking at, they are based on OS maps but with different and improved data and colouring, there is a whole area for free to see the details.

there was a way to get low level OS maps from bing but microsoft stopped that.

and you can of coarse but the individual OS regions as welll from locus store.

main thing missing from locus that viewranger has is 3d view, but can can open a track in google earth

there is an AR addon for augmented reality view.

and there is the equivalent to the live buddy tracking.

syncing is available with gold subscription.

With the Gold Subscription you have all LoMaps for free. There are also very good free maps. I only use maps from Openandromaps and Elevate Theme.

Install Locus Map 4. When you register in the store, you get the first 3 LoMap maps for free. You can take out the subscription after testing. Then download the maps from Openandromaps (OAM) and test them too. It is important to choose the appropriate theme in the app and then your activity in it. Only the theme brings the advantage of OAM.

Hi Adam,

Alistair Parsons and freischneider has right. Thank you, guys.

Try three LoMaps for free and decide later.

Hope it works for you.

There are so many map sources available, theres plenty to chop and change, right map for the right activity, the OSM outdoors maps i think is what viewranger natively uses.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Not really the answer I was hoping for, but at least now I know.

And I have some ideas for some other maps to try :)

Hi Adam,

I understand your concern - we were traveling in Wales last year and used almost only the OS Maps, because the OSM dataset (on which almost all other maps are based - except apparently the above-mentioned John Thorn Maps, but these I don't know) was absolutely insufficient, at least in this area.

You can also use the OS Maps directly via their app or via the Viewranger successor outdooractive in the Pro subscription. However, both are far from being as versatile as Locus.

Best Regards

Martin

I also am looking for a viewranger replacement and am trying locus. I bought a couple of os map tiles but they're much lower quality than in viewranger, at least half resolution, which is very disappointing for the price of them. I've also tried John's map but it's lacking some important details in the base OSM map so neither option are comparable to viewranger :(

Thats weird, according to locus store description, when you buy the map for the area, its the exact same map as used by OS, in both explorer and landranger resolution.

Definitely not full resolution as used by OS. Makes the OS map data look bad. Real shame because otherwise it would have fit my needs.

Could you show side by side example screenshots highlighting for the locus team to perhaps look at.....

I had a closer look and I think the reduced quantity I see is because the maps have been resampled into slippy map tiles, which don't have a 1:1 conversion at the pixel level and that has introduced artifacts. It makes the map look a little fuzzy compared to the original. Not sure how well that will come across in a screen shot by the time jpeg has had it's way with it but I'm try. Note you can't get them to exactly the same scale, but close. If you zoom in a bit the blurring is a bit more obvious. That's running them side by side at the same time.

Hi,

it can be caused by automatic scaling based on the device screen parameters (DPI).

Try to switch it off.

Settings > Maps > Advanced features > Optimize raster map resolution.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it doesn't make any difference to this issue. Just to be clear - the maps are perfectly usable as they are, they're just not as good quality as they should be.

Hi,

it looks like we need a little bit more time to explore this issue. Maybe it could be caused by transformation from original OS maps to Locus. There is some resampling process and there could be a problem that is visible in large zoom.

We try to fix it in the next version.

Thanks, Zdenek.
