Pre-projection of waypoints for compass-course driving in rallye raids

Andreas Pflug shared this idea 9 years ago

This is a very common request to all GPS devices, but no one has done it yet. Would be perfect for Locus Maps. It is usual to have one or more "compass courses" in offroad rallye racing. This means, you arrive on a unknown point somewhere (guided by the roadbook) and start from there into a waypoint-projection, which is defined in the roadbook. "Go 1200m on course 330°". Normally, people have to stop the car and start programming this point (because a straight line is mostly not possible), which takes a while. Would be better to pre-programm this course before the race and just press the button "start course #3 from here" - So no need to stop anymore. Would be very happy to find a solution.

Thx,

Andreas

Hi Andreas,

i am not familiar with rally racing, i hope i understand your question.

At the moment i see only following solution,

run locus with satfix during the race, if you are close to the "unknown point" your copilot use Geocaching Tools/Projection and add "distance" and "azimuth" value.

If you reach the unknown point he tap on the "targeticon" (behind the coords) and select "from map" and confirm two times. Now he tap on new icon on map and select "guide on"

If you need the projection precisely you have to stop for a short time.

I hope it help a little

Hi,

If I understand correctly, you want to have pre-defined course and distance values for projection right? So instead of filling values during ride, you just tap on one of predefined values and that's all ...

Hmm, except your specific use-case, I personally do not see any reason for this. And because Locus is mainly focused on hike & bike and not on a rally races, I think such feature do not belong to this app.

Alternative is as balloni wrote or your copilot may use Menu > Settings > Maps - objects & styles > Line to GPS and project your distance & angle visually directly on the map.

Hi Balloni and Menion,

thanks for the replys. You understand this absolutely right and yes, it`s a bit specific. The idea of just creating this visual on the map, is very good and I`m going to give it a try. Otherwise I may have a look into the Locus Android Api, which may lead to an small app, calculating waypoints on the fly and sending it to Locus. Is there a way, to set an imported waypoint as active navigation target via Api?

Kind regards,

Andreas

If you will try to create small app as private extension for Locus, then it should be definitely possible. And expect my help if needed.

You may use Locus API, which offer quite a lot of possibilities. I started to write some docs for this, but 95% of descriptions is still missing so best is to use "Sample app"

http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:locus_api

Anyway what you need should be possible. If you'll miss anything, feel free to write me, I'll help or add this feature (if possible) to API

Yes, I saw your name in the source folder :-)

My first try, importing the sample app into the new Android studio, failt last night. So I decided to use good old eclipse - Where you have documented the way to do it. Anyway - Thanks for providing an api to Locus maps. This gives so much possibilities to play with.

Oh, I missed your new HowTo. Maybe I`ll try again with Android Studio. Last night I visted the site on Google code, which exlains it for Eclipse. Yes, I am a bit new to Android development. :-)

Understand. I fight with Android studio also. It took me almost three days till I moved whole Locus from Eclipse. But it's recommended method for now so I suggest to use it also. Compare to Eclipse, Android Studio has bright future in Android developing.

As I wrote, If you'll miss something (even in How-to), let me know (or improve it by your own ;) )

Thats good to hear and I will continue with Android Studio. Will try by myself, before I come up with next questions. You know, solving a problem make more fun, when you use your own solution. Even good for lerning and multiple failing is for free included :-)

So hopefully I will report back, when there is something working to see.
