show vector overlay over raster map

would be nice to have the possibility to show the vector maps together with raster maps (surfaces of vector maps have to be transparent). P.e.: OSM-vector street maps over Ozi-topographic-raster maps or vector streets over satellite view

It would also sometimes be useful to overlay vector maps on satellite images.

what is needed is support for osm.map from software like GPSMapedit or Globbal Mapper. or Locus have the ability to read .mp and .shp type files with the same speed as osm. then transparent layers would be possible.

i would love this feature if the "vector maps" would be in format of .shp. ESRI SHAPE

Seems that it could require a special self made file with information which vector map to overlay to a bitmap map.

I see some similarities to my feature request: https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/top...

Wouldn`t it be a killer feature for locus do something "new" with different maps sources? There are many new possibilities.

"show vector overlay over raster map "

A vector map lacks detail. Besides the format, omitting detail is how the file size is reduced. So often, where I want more detail, I will overlay the vector with a section of Google Hybrid. That way, I don`t have to switch maps. But the opposite, overlaying a detailed raster with a skimpy vector?

Someone is going to have to give a good example why that is a good idea, other than being technoerotic. Just because my name is Starman doesn`t mean I give out stars that easily.

A vector map lacks detail.

-> I don`t think so. You have a very big detail amount on the low zoom levels, better than google maps or others and you can re-render your own vector map with osmosis and mapsforge mapswriter, changing a xml file to set more details available at earlier zoom levels. (So did I and I love it! Even though germany needed 3 days for creation)

Also you could create a vector map with pois only. I think there are more more pois with better quality in OSM in comparison to google maps.

Show the pictures here as "overlay examples" Text doesn`t matter...

In example with mobile atlas creator (mobac) you can define different map sources to be overlayed together. The 1. Map Source is a topologic map, transparent .png, which indicates the height in gray scale, the 2nd map is also bitmap but instead of bitmap the bitmap of a rendered vector map could be used. Altogether creates a completely new map experienece without comex map preparation, in my example with mobac. Mobac only supports bitmap sources creating different output formats.

(I use mobac for my maps on locus to snip the maps together.)

I was talking about the typical OSM Vector maps like those available through Locus Shop. When they create those maps, one way they get the file size down is to leave out huge quantities of detail.

I suppose you could roll your our vector maps with more detail, but then the file size would increase. You can`t have small file size and detail at the same time.

A common complaint when someone downloads their first vector map, enticed by the low file size is, "hey, it doesn`t show my favorite hiking trail."

But complaining that a vector map lacks detail is like complaining to your wife that she is getting heavy, and then when she loses some weight, you decide that you liked her better when she was plump. :-)

I never looked at the locus maps. On a phone with one 480 resoultion is might be enoigh details but with 800 resolution more details are better. In comparison the german mapsforge map has ~700MB and my new created map with a lot of more (and better) details has ~1200GB. Not so much different.

What is big? If thw whole country would have 2GB with much details included, I think size doesn`t matter (unless the size is supported by the filesystem or the map renderer). I would be happier if the online available vector maps would have more instead of less because it tooks many days to re-calc on a desktop system, server system is says to be faster, only hours.

Now, my german map, looks nearly like the http://openstreetmap.de/ mapnik style and with all the same details at each zoom level!!!! (for example forests, crop fields, industrial area). It`s the best solution instead of using bitmap rendered tiles, because OSM doesn`t allow power downloads ;-)

gazoox-

You state that you have never looked at the Locus vector maps that i am referring to. And I have not seen the German vector map that you are referring to. So the only thing that we have established is that neither of us knows what the other is talking about. :)

Well, could be the case :~]

To brint this to an end, a final statement:

I tryied the locus map and the mapsforge maps for download and comparet it with mine.

-> Locus map: less details, mapsforge V3

-> Mapsforge.org map (http://download.mapsforge.org/maps/): mapsforge V3, more details in comparison to the locus map download

->My map: mapsforgeV2, the new V3 library looks better, but must be created with the V3 mapwriter; My detail configuration fits better to me than the other maps.

* As a suggestion for the locus: Offering the map: one with less details and one with more details could be a good thing.

* I think I have to re-render my V2 map to the new mapsforge V3 for better look.

on vectormaps4locus site are I think older maps in V2 version. Directly in locus may be downloaded same maps as are on mapsforge I think. At least in version 3 with mapsforge writter V3, so I expect same details as maps you downloaded and tried

Hello Menion. How couldn`t I see this. I tried an older download form mapsforge and it (nearly) identical. You must be right! thx

topic closed as "completed". In last market version is already implemented this feature. New version will bring ability to remember last selected overlay so you`ll not be forced to start again "Map overlay" feature to set same overlay as in last session
