Turn of selection

I use a kml layer to show land ownership. Each ownership has specific colors and when I move the selection cross over a particular polygon, it will highlight it. Is there a way to have it not do this? If I want to select it, I will tap it but otherwise I don't want my selection cross to highlight it.
