Legends for (Vector) maps

Would be great to have a link to the legend of all the symbols and kind of ways and roads within each map. At least for the vector maps this should be possible.

Thanks very much for your helpful information. Wouldn`t it be nice to have this within the application?

Well, for Locus internal Vector themes it is indirectly there because there is a link to this manual.

For the other two it`s not as they are just 3rd party maps.

I`ve added direct link to this legend on information page of vector maps. Just a shortcut

Hi Menion,

do ypou see any chance to get a more sophisticated solution implemented?

Since I often use one map with different themes, a legend per theme would be great.

Menion, I had two issues with the legend

1) It is not easy to find. I searched in Locus store on the themes page, I searched where I switch themes, but it took a while until I tried the vector map detail page. Do you see chances to make it easier to find?

2) My Andriod 4.0.4 browser does only display an empty page; http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:maps:vector_maps_legend is only readable on my PC.

BTW, the color codes for backcountry skiing track difficulties are black/red/blue in Germany and Austria - is cyan, cyan+yellow and cyan+red usual in CZ? If yes, we'll have to live with different standards, if not, could we make the borders black/red/blue instead of transparent/yellow/red? That would make the display much easier to understand without Legend :)

At 1)

that's the question...from my point of view is legend connected to the map but I understand that legend depends more on themes then on map. Locus store is wrong place because internal themes are not in store and I expect that store contains maps not the legend. I think that current solution is quite suitable.

2)

Unfortunately I'm not able to simulate it. I've tried chrome, default browser, opera mini, dolphin and all browsers show the page correctly

Color codes

Inspiration for me was the http://www.pistes-nordiques.org site that is now the http://www.opensnowmap.org/

Honestly I wanted to remove the difference for backcountry skiing tracks and leave only one general style (the same) for all types of backcountry skiing tracks. But I expect the you would kill me for this :) Can you give me some example of "standardized" style for backcountry skiing tracks?

@1) Oh, yes, the default themes are not in Store > By Usage > Graphic > Themes, but only additional themes... So store is really the wrong position for a legend :) Maybe it's easy to implement a documentation icon in the theme switcher (callable from right button bar) like in other dialogs?

@2) For me, it's not important, as I have the Opera mini option :) As long as not a bigger amount of users say that they have the same issue, it's IMHO not so relevant.

I can't open pistes-nordiques.org Other colors are used e.g. by the OSM based http://www.xctrails.org/map.html?type=xc# or the official German XC portal (by tourist info and ski clubs) http://www.loipenportal.de/schwarzwald use the other color codes (blue/red/black).

You can remove the color codes if you want to, as I can simply use another vector theme ;-) I experience colors for difficulties as helpful, e.g. when going with beginners or when it's icy or when I want a more demanding track.

@1) I'll discuss it with menion...

Old pistes-nordiques.org site is now the: http://www.opensnowmap.org/

There is ont point I've forgot to mention. The downhill slopes are rendered in (blue/red/black) style which seems to be used in whole Europe. So can we use similar colours for backcountry skiing tracks? I mean that it causes similar colors for different type of tracks (even if backcountry skiing track will have green outline)

@2) Here, also with 4.0.4 and stock browser, it works

I tried again and got a plain grey page in Browser, and the expected content in Opera Mini. I printed it as PDF so it works also offline.

As a kind of "proof of concept" the map key could consist of a dummy map drawn using the theme in question, either to provide a rough overview of the appearance, or (with more sophistication) to give detailed legend

That's exactly what we wanted to create when the legend was prepared. I mean to create some "legend" map. There was and unfortunately still is one issue - the text labels. We're not able to ensure that all text/lables in this legend map would be shown on the map.

Honestly the images for legend was prepared from screen-shots of special vector maps that contain only limited elements...

Could you match the dummy map with a dummy overlay to display a legend?

match with dummy overlay? I'm sorry but don't understand?

photo

I just wondered if you could use the "overlay" routine to display a bitmapped legend to match the dummy vector map.

To have a "example vector map" with a legend as bitmap (or characters modeled as streets or the like) sounds great, because it would display a legend for all themes.

Uff it could be probably possible but it's little bit tricky. It's "only" legend and sorry I don't like the suggestion with overlay. We're planing to improve the rendering of the text labels for vector maps in next year. As soon as we'll be able to handle text correctly then we can discuss about dummy vector maps as legend.

Hi, you've just merged my question with this topic. Now there's an unrelated picture pinned to the main post and I didn't get my answer.

I was asking what do the symbols in the picture mean. I'm talking about the colour-marked paths with the colour squares withing a white frame. To my knowledge, these are not Czech waymarks, neither they can be found in the legend.

What are the symbols in the screenshot now attached to the main post?

These symbols should respect the signs used in the field - they don't tell anything about character this track (at least in Czech Rep). Symbols are rendered based on the value osmc:symbol

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:osmc:symbol . Possible values of this OSM tag are shown at http://www.wanderreitkarte.de/symbols_en.html

The rectangle symbol only corresponds the values that are defined in raw OSM data osmc:symbol = blue:white:blue_rectangle . Eq: https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/3182485/history

So the question is: are these paths really marked with color rectangle?

To whom it may interest: PDF files containing the legend of a theme can be opened from where you change the theme, see https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/shortcuts-to-legends#comment-84305
