Maps with altitude lines like topographical maps

druki shared this idea 12 years ago

We have maps in Locus. We recently got altitude informations by STRM (online and offline). Could it be possible to combine this in locus so it can display altitude lines like in Top50 maps? How exact could be this look with the resolution of the 3°STRM of europe? I`m a fan of topographical maps and would apreciate it using it with vectormaps (less memory than topo-pixel-maps).

This could be very usefull and nice. I was also thinking about "rendering" (3d with shadows) the terrain over the map. Of course it will eat a lot of CPU, but maybe in the future, and in the OpenGL times...

Maybe I`m confused, but isn`t this already possible? - see this thread:

http://forum.locusmap.eu/viewtopic.ph...

It is also possible to combine these with a (raster) hillshade overlay - look in online maps, overlays, hike&bike hillshade. Takes a lot of memory to store all zoom levels offline though, which is why this idea would be useful:

Now we have `auto-zoom-lock`, maybe its only a matter of time before this can work independently on different layers.

Obvious 3d rendering performed by locus is a completely different thing, and would be fantastic, but I think my slow phone might just give up and refuse to work anymore if this becomes possible.

@Skids, thanks for pointing that out. I just tested and it works like a charm. I downloaded the modified germany.map and installed the hiking theme.

However, it looks like the vector maps from locus shop do not include the contour information (yet).

yes yet (work in progress). So till this will not be ready, this topic will be open ...

I know this will anyway will not be exact solution that druki wrote about. I was searching and checking some altitude lines algorithms and even if getting offline altitudes is quite fast (on average phone around 4000 points per sec), compute of altitude lines itself is very complicated. Too much for now.

Until you`ll find a way how to effectively display altitude lines what about to show hill-shading like http://hikebikemap.de/?

It is less performance greedy and altitude lines are usefull just in detailed scales anyway.

I was using the Vector Maps (contours only style) workaround for adding Contours as an overlay over a regular map. For some reason this stopped working a while ago. Sorry I cannot say when, I must have been within the last 3 months.

It still works with Online Maps as an overlay, just Vector with the contours only style seems to be broken. I only see white screen with the contours...

Hi,

I don’t know if I understand correctly your issue but from my point of view this is expected behavior. "Contours only" style shows from vector map file only contour lines. So when you want to show vector map which contain contour-lines simple choose different style (for example built-in hiking theme) and turn-off the map overlay function.

Of course it depends which vector map do you use. I assume that you have vector map from Locus store.

I used to use the "contour_only" layer as an OVERLAY of a regular map (without contours). I think it was the "Multiply" setting. It used to work, but now it doesn`t.

The great thing about this solution was that I could use ANY online or offline map and add countours, even offline. I want that back :-)

I’m sorry, I didn’t understand correctly the previous message. It seems that vector map as overlay is not transparent. We’ll check it.

I`m closing this topic as "Implemented"

Currently available vector maps from Locus Store (and probably also from other sources) already contain contour lines. Also in latest version of Locus was introduced shading for vector maps, so It`s deadly combination.

Generating contour lines for personal maps is not possible now and not even planned.
