Samsung watch classic (Tizen Ver 5.5.0.2)

Hi,

I'm using Locus Map Classic (3.70.15) on a Samsung Galaxy A51 and I previously had a Sony smart watch 3 but the battery has deteriorated so I bought a Galaxy watch classic which I assumed ran Wear OS 3.0. However it turns out that it still runs Tizen 5.5.0.2. So my question is, does Locus Map work with Tizen 5 and how do I install it? Also are there any issues with Locus Map Classic?

Thanks in advance,

Henry.

Hi Henry,

unfortunately, the Locus Map Watch add-on is only available for Wear OS devices.

I have a Samsung Watch without Wear OS and it works.

Yes, we used to develop the Tizen version but it is no longer available on the Galaxy Store.

Maybe I had gotten them somewhere. Best to search the WEB.

So, there seems to be some confusion about Locus Map on Tizen so I did some investigation. Samsung is indeed stopping support for Tizen this year and may have already done so. However, I connected my Galaxy Watch Classic to WiFi and then to the Samsung Store where I found that both LM Pro Watch and LM Free Watch are still available to download and install. As I'm using LM Classic, I downloaded the LMPW version and installed. This seems to work fine but note that the full LMC app is required on the connected phone for it to work. I will go for a long (ish) bike ride on Thursday to try it out properly.

I don't know how long the Samsung Store will continue to offer these two apps for download, so I guess it would be a good idea to keep a local copy on a backup drive somewhere. As LMC is not being developed further, the LMPW Tizen app (dev also ended) should continue to work as is. Not so sure about a LM4/LMFW combination, as the LM4 phone app will continue development and could diverge from the static LMFW Tizen app. Any advice from the help desk on that would be welcomed by some users I'm sure.

Also, I'm unsure if and how a Tizen watch app can be downloaded, stored and then reinstalled from a location other than the Galaxy Store. Does anyone have any advice on that, it would be very useful?

Cheers H.

Yes, I would expect the LM4/LMFW combination to work at this point in time but in the future LM4 may diverge as development proceeds and LMFW remains static. So it might be worth raising a ticket to get confirmation from the help desk.

I have also done more investigation and the Galaxy Store will stop Tizen support from September 30th 2025. After this point, if you need to reset your smartwatch or change your phone, you will NOT be able to download any Tizen apps from the GS and your smartwatch will be pretty much useless.

The only way I can see around this eventuality is to store copies of all the TPKs you use on a local backup and find a method of installing them on the watch. I don't know if it is even possible to install a TPK on a Tizen watch from any other source than the GS but I will have a look around to see if I can find out. I think the XDA forum will probably be the best bet.

Cheers H.

Hi guys,

we don't see the Locus Map Watch add-on on the web version of the Galaxy Store, and we lost access to the administration of the Store, so we can't check the status of the add-on. Anyway, the Tizen version is no longer maintained, and if it still works and is available for Tizen watches, that would be good for you. However, only the Wear OS version will be maintained in the future.
