Geocaching - app does not recognize cache owner

Solved

In settings there is an option to set the cache owner. In geocaching there are two data fiels: "owned by" and "placed by". When I do geocaching maintenance and I want to enter maintenance entry the app does not recognize me as cache owner. Only when I change owned by to the value of placed by it recognizes me. Locus Map does this wrong and it is annoying when I do geocaching maintenance.

Hi, sorry for the inconvenience. Locus Map only verifies the cache owner, not the one who placed the cache. Is it wrong? Should it take both persons as one?

@Twentse Mug: Please tell the GC-code of the Cache you are talking, as well as your Geocaching Nickname.

There's only 1 owner of a Cache who's able to post maintenance logs, even if the Cache has been hidden by different Cachers named in the "placed by" field.

An example.

My geocaching name = Twentse Mug and I own GC5A7X0 (Bicycle Parking). This geocache is adopted from another geocacher with the name Sean J. Allen. So this geocache has:

placed by = Sean J. Allen

owned by = Twentse Mug.

In the Locus Map I have put my name Twentse Mug as owner in Settings. When I go there to do maintenance I wanted to write an Owner Maintenance log. However, the app does not recognize my name and I have no option for this type of log. I can write logs as a geocacher but not as an owner. When I write found log the app crashes.

When I put the name Sean J. Allen in settings as owner I have different options in the logging menu and I see the owner options like Owner Maintenance and I can write a maintenance log. However: Sean J. Allen is not the owner!

Then I go to another geocache where I have Placed by and Owned by as Twentse Mug, for example this is GCAPQ1A. I do maintenance here also. But now I have to change settings and put Twentse Mug as owner in settings to write a Owner Maintenance log.

This is annoying. What I want is that the field Owned By has the cache owner as entry and not the Placed By because that is very confusing.

Oh and by the way: I am a very very big fan of the app Locus Map, I could not do geocaching without it!

Hi,

thanks for detailed description. I see the main problem here:

3da4fea2e4fe4f86156dc92164dde13c

There is still the name of the original owner. When I click on this name, it opens your profile, correctly. But over geocaching API I use to download cache details, this "Sean J. Allen" text is returned. Are you able to modify it somehow?

@Menion: The "Owner" (here: "Twentse Mug") of a Cache should not to be confused with the "Placed by" (here: "Sean J. Allen") of a Cache. Both are different data fields which both are separately delivered by Groundspeaks' API I guess. In almost all cases just "Owner" is important:

- "Owner" listed in a GC's main site in Locus, including who is addressed by "Show user profile" and "Send a message"
- Recognizing Locus if the user is allowed to post maintenance entry and disable/enable logs
- distinguish between owned and other men's Caches e.g. for statistics, filter, or map icons.

"Placed by" should also be noted somewhere for info, maybe on the GC's main site as well or on top of the "Listing"-site. But not relevant for anything else. "Placed by" could be freely choosen by the "Owner" of a Cache. In most cases its identical to "Owner"-field, but sometimes its different: If a team hidden a Cache ("Team Gigaevent Prague"), or a Cache got adopted ("Thomas, originally by Sepp"), or just giving some fantasy names which are part of the Cache story ("Darth Vader" for a Starwars-Cache).

And finally an additional problem right now: If I'm contacting nowadays faulty Cacheowner, I'm either contacting a former owner, or a owner who quit Geocaching, or even an name which doensn't exist on Geocaching.com (fantasy names, Team names)

Hello.... after about 5 years I really had to log in and write here just a short sigh.

I reported this problem in August 2016! So hopefully it will be fixed on the 10th anniversary of my announcement.

Thank you and I wish you all the best.

@Sonny

I'm still sure, there is no problem on the Locus Map side. Here is a object returned by the Groundspeak API

7f8c561e138c8c8e7794ad0fd32118cb

As you may see, "ownerAlias" value is really set to "Sean". Based on documentation, here should be: "ownerAlias = Display name of owner for geocache."

So, from my point of view, the issue is on the Groundspeak side!

Anyway, seems there is another option to retrieve the owner's name, and it returns a valid value. So consider as fixed in the next Locus Map 4 version.

@Condor

I do not know what exactly you reported 10 years ago, but Locus Map support direct download of caches over API for last two years and definitely not for 10!!

Problem with alias owner. The correct value should be "placed by" (if it exists). If not, then return the value not "text" alias owner, but the value with the link where this value points - the real owner.

https://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=5321.msg44642#msg44642

edit:

Now it occurred to me.... the correct value is returned by {co}, so this is where it needs to be fixed and the "text" value alias owner should be {co} is correct.

You can fix that right away too ;)

P.S.: This fix will also fix all other problems with other features that depend on the correct owner name.

@Menion: I checked the cache by loading it with GSAK using groundspeak-API as well. GSAK fields "Owner Name" = "Twentse Mug" and "Placed By" = "Sean J. Allen". So everything ok with API reply. I also looked at GSAK's API-log, maybe it could help you with Locus detecting correct API fields:

"ownerCode":"PR2VWH1",
"ownerAlias":"Sean J. Allen",
"owner":{"membershipLevelId":3,"findCount":14784,"hideCount":49,"username":"Twentse Mug"},
