LoMaps - use of colours and lines for foot paths PTC

I using the low Maps online downloaded to my phone. The maps are good except I think the choice use of colours and lines for foot paths etc could be much improved. For example, if you look at maps on online street map, the footpaths are very clear as red dotted Lines whereas on the low Maps, sometimes you have footpaths which are dashed lines and then there are tracks which have longer dashed lines and some of these are actually Farm tracks and you can't walk on them so this is very confusing when the map is supposed to be for walking. Therefore I think the colour usage should be changed to be much closer to the colour usage of applications like online street maps. I use another map application called map Navigator and in this application, which isn't as good for walking generally, the foot paths and the farm tracks are distinguished very clearly and so I sometimes have to switch to that one to enable me to see which are actually the footpaths in which of the farm tracks which may not be accessible

Thank you for your detailed feedback. To help me better understand and address the issues you've mentioned, could you please share a few screenshots highlighting the specific problems? This would allow me to locate the problematic areas and check if there is a chance to improve it.

You also mentioned red dotted lines on an online street map. Since there are several online maps available, I’d appreciate it if you could include a screenshot of the map —just to ensure we're referring to the same one.

Thank you
Petr

Hi

Thanks for your response. Here is an example. Notice how the green dotted line from the Open Streetmap is very clear and different from the farm track - 2 parallel dotted lines. On the LoMap, you see 2 similar dashed lines - the only difference between the length/spacing of the dashes. Very difficult to distinguish - especially if you would normally wear reading glasses (like me). OSM simply has blue dashes for bike track, red dashes for footpath and green dashes for bridleway. Something similar is needed on LoMap. Also, the bold red lines for main footpaths seems too overpowering - this should be changed really too. At the moment, it's inconsistent because other footpaths are grey dashed lines on LoMaps, not red.

There are many different designs. Some people want it the way it is, while others want it different. That's why there is the option to use different themes. There are several in the forum. Always make sure that the theme works with the map. For example, a theme that works with LoMap. I use maps from Openandromaps. Their theme (which is installed at the same time) is called Elevate. Since I'm not completely satisfied with it yet, I've customized the theme a bit. But it's not that easy. Information can be found in the Locus forum or Openandromaps forum.

Thanks for your reply - can you direct me to that forum please? Is there any way I can use this theme on my own LocusMap/LoMap installation please? i.e. is it possible to change my LoMap theme and if so, how? :-)

The Elevate theme is not fully compatible with LoMaps.

For example, the colour of the route type and style of the trails is lost.

Yes, that's why I use OAM maps and LoMap. OAM for the map and LoMap for offline POIs and addresses.

In the OAM maps or Elevate Theme, you can also show and hide a lot of things.

I saw the need to start creating my own theme because the Locus theme confuses me like my colleague, and I don't like Elevate.

Thanks very much for the info. I didn't know how the themes work and I think it took me about an hour to find out how to change the Map theme - as access to the option seems quite deep in the menus and the "Settings Search" does not reveal the map themes setting - I had to go through several menus to find it. I've now added a shortcut on the panel, so it's great to be able to switch themes easily!

@freischneider - thank you for pointing the different themes.

Locus Map is highly customizable, and I hope the alternative theme provides a better experience for you. The default internal theme uses a slightly different color scheme than OSM Carto style.

In LoMaps default theme:
- The original track or path is always displayed.
- The trail type (e.g., hiking or biking) is indicated by a colored line with a slight offset, so the underlying "source" track remains visible.

Trail highlighting:

- Bike trails are marked in pink and include a cyclist symbol.
- Hiking trails use a variety of colors, depending on the main trail definition (red is commonly used).
- Bridleways are not highlighted

As I understand it, bridleways can be considered more like paths rather than tracks, so we'll slightly adjust their styling to reflect that

Thanks, Petr
