IGN maps "unknown error"

Hello,

I'm using locus for years but still have an issue with french ign maps downloaded from the store. Despite the latest version of locus and a valid subscription I have the "unknown error" message on the maps.

This issue has been kind of ongoing for years now. Multiple devices, app reinstalls, new maps downloads ... It's always working for a while and then it stops. Since it's taking forever to redownload the maps I would like to find a proper solution.

Thanks

Hello,

I'm sorry for complications. Could I kindly ask you to test the online IGN Map - would you please open Menu > Map Manager > Online > IGN > and select Cartes IGN. Can you see the map, please ?

Thanks,Petr

Hello,

Well, I just made it work again. I downloaded a tiny piece of map, just to see if it would display or not (the online IGN maps always work btw).

Then I restarted the app and I think it updated the whole thing and now all my downloaded ign maps are working.

Now I realise that when it's working, ign maps have an ign icon and a green font in the map manager. When I get the issue, the ign icon disappear and is replaced by the same icon as the opentopo maps with "SQL" mention if I remember correctly.

If it can help.

Sadly I don't have a screenshot of the map manager before the issue was solved. But here is what I mean:
From what I remember the icon "données IGN" was replaced by the black / white / blue map icon (like the others below) and the text was something like SQL (as VEC or MBT on the others). The green text "IGN - cartes IGN" was also missing probably.

As soon as I downloaded that one additional tile (the one called saint lary) and restarted the app, it worked.

Cheers

I have the same problem.

The problem hapen regularly when I activate IGN maps on Map overlays.

To solve it I have to activate main map in IGN map online, and/or offline, and to play several time around these settings until it work on Maps overlays. It is frustating each time to do it and a lot worst for somebody new with Locu map.

Another subject about download of offline IGN maps : If big number of tulles, there is no message explaining that maximum of tulles number par day is reached and it will be continuied next day.
I understood the maximum download per day because I have read a lot about this, but few peaople know it.

Rafael, I'm not using overlays at all. I have the problem on the main maps.

IGN tiles are very annoying to download, since it takes forever (a night?) to get a mere gigabyte of data. I wish it were possible to download an entire region or country as a single file.

Remy,

An entire region or country can be a very (very) big size of map and I understood it can take a very long time because maximum tiles downloaded par day from IGN.

In order to reduce the size :

- I download only areas where I live, or where I will go or along a route.

- I only download zoom 16. Nothing above nor below.

It's not even a big file that's the problem. I have the IGN map of the Pyrenees, and it's only 1.3 GB. It should be downloaded in a minute if it was one file instead of thousands.

Hi,
That’s a very strange behavior. Are you able to reproduce it every time, please?
Could we ask for your help in investigating this issue? We'd create a temporary debug version with detailed logging, which would help us identify the cause (we can’t reproduce it on our devices).

To explain slow downloading: The map is downloaded as small image tiles, similar to how online maps work. To prevent overloading the IGN map server, the app limits the number of download threads. Please consider the maximum detail (zoom level), as each additional zoom level roughly quadruples the map size and therefore the download time.
Thans, Petr

Hello,

Sadly, I can’t reproduce the issue yet. It’s working now, and I don’t know how to make it “not work”. Usually, it works well for a few months or even a year before the issue appears.

But if / when the problem comes back, I will definitely help on this topic.

About the tiles, I need 1:25,000 detail. I think that corresponds to zoom level 17 in the app. Higher zoom levels don’t add anything.

Thank you

Remy,

If I remember well, zoom 16 is the level where IGN map is graphicaly drawn as Topo 25 IGN map. Above (zoom 17, 18) the graphical drawn is a lot different. This is why I only download IGM offline map at zoom level 16.

Are you sure ? When I go to download manager, if I don't select level 17, the preview is clearly not 1/25000 quality. See screenshots below.

I see… Feel free to contact us if the issue occurs again.
@Rafael – you’re correct, the Topo 25 map is available up to zoom level 16.

Thanks, Petr
