KISS protocol radio integration

Completed

Grazie dell'attenzione !

I would suggest implementing the KISS protocol to display and transmit the geographical locations of various users via APRS. This can be very useful in search and rescue, hiking, safety, and other contexts. Integrating this protocol would ensure compatibility with many—and eventually all—RTX radios currently on the market. Thank you for your attention!

Hello Alberto,

in the "Sensors manager" is already available under "Others > NMEA reader" device, that should already read transmitted NMEA messages and display data on the screen. Give it a try and let me know, if it works as expected.

I'm glad to read it, perfect.

If there will be something to improve, feel free to write to me. If you attach a sample NMEA message(s), it will be useful.

Try this.

Locus map 4 > Settings > Expert settings > Points.

- Set.

Default point icon | Default waypoint icon | Default via point icon.

Hello Alberto,
to move this further (and to help with the "custom icons" idea), could you tell me a bit more about your setup?

  • Which radio model and firmware are you using?
  • If possible, can you record a short sample of what your radio sends to Locus? (in "Sensors manager > ⋯ > Raw data recorder", ~30 seconds is enough or record as NMEA over app settings)
  • What does "custom icons" mean for you exactly — pick the closest:
    a) just replace the default pin with one icon I choose,
    b) different icons by station type (car / house / weather …),
    c) different icons by callsign (my friends vs. others),
    d) my own position should look different from received stations.
  • Should the icon rotate to show direction of movement?
  • Should the callsign be shown as a label below each icon?

Thanks!

La radio che utilizzo e' la VGC VR-N76 Fw 0.9.2

Scelta A:

I dati nmea ho capito dove trovarki x il raw x o ho qualche problema..

Attendo tue, grazie !!!

Hello Alberto,
a couple of APRS-related improvements landed in the upcoming Locus Map 4.33.1 based on your screenshots and the discussion above:

  • Received Kenwood radio waypoints ($PKWDWPL) are now plotted at the correct position — there was a latitude/longitude swap that placed them on the wrong continent.
  • The default rendering for received APRS stations is now a discreet Locus dot instead of the loud Garmin red flag.
  • You can now pick a custom icon per APRS sensor in Sensors manager > (your APRS sensor) > Settings > Waypoint icon. Tap to choose, long-press to reset to the default dot.
  • Timestamps on received waypoints now use the date carried in the message itself, fixing ±24-hour jumps around UTC midnight.

The wider KISS-protocol integration (decoding raw AX.25 from any TNC, not just Kenwood-style radios) is a much bigger piece of work.

Try the next beta when it lands and let us know how it works for your setup.
