Grey band across Ordnance Survey UK maps

Hi, I have a grey band across my maps containing the message Map of this area is not available. It plainly is available as it can be seen greyly beneath. The band moves as I scroll to always be across some of the screen. Is happening on both my phone and tablet. Looks like a bug of some kind? Example att. Thanks.

Hi Mark,

it seems you have some map overlay turned on - either through the map overlay feature or via WMS/WMTS. Please check it and turn it off if applicable.

Hi Michal, I have just downloaded some new OS maps. The first one seemed fine but adding contiguous further maps has brought the same problem. I have no overlays as far as I can see, see screen shot att. Same problem on both my tablet and phone. Not resolved unfortunately. Thx Mark.

Hi Mark,

what about WMS or WMTS map? Is there this button in the top left corner?

Next option, a KML file. Please check that the "Active items" is also empty. More info: https://docs.locusmap.app/doku.php/manual:user_guide:mainscr_lpanel#active_items

Hi Michal, thanks for your reply. Answers are no though - see attached. NB I have no problem at very high levels of zoom-in. ?? The problem might be across the different layers of OS mapping somehow.

As I switch around maps, the problem is changing before my eyes: I now have grey dropped tiles rather than greyed mapping. E.g. on the third file the whole screen area should be available, as it was earlier today. Evidently it is struggling to retrieve the mapping. Some OS maps seem problematic and some not. The boundary seen is between two maps.

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Michal asked me to help with this issue. I tested the Maidstone & the Medway Towns sheet (which should cover the missing area) and the map appears to be correct on our side.

Could you please try the following steps:
- Open Menu > Settings > Maps > Offline maps > Raster maps and set No map auto‑load.
- Go to Menu > Map manager > Offline tab > Maps.
- Open the three‑dot menu for Ordnance Survey and choose Center map.
- Check whether Maidstone & the Medway Towns is listed among the maps. If it is, what happens when you select it to center the map on that sheet?

Thank you for checking this.
Petr

Hi Petr, I have now selected No map autoload as you request, though I can't see that it makes a difference to the outcome: all OS remains active.

When I select Maidstone map and autocentre I get it, looks fine. But when I scroll left towards Sevenoaks map, as soon as that starts to appear, the Maidstone map on right of screen disappears giving grey area. I can recover the Maidstone mapping by scrolling right away from Sevenoaks map: middle of Maidstone map is there and I can scroll left again to repeat the effect. If I dither around the boundary, grey blocks appear and shift around.

The program is evidently struggling with the map sheet boundary: can't see two map sheets at once. I bought Sevenoaks first in this part of UK, and it seems to be the reliable one.

It's not a problem confined to one OS map: I can get similar problems elsewhere in UK.

Thanks,

Mark

Dear Mark,

I’m sorry for the late reply. I wanted to discuss the issue with our main developer first. It appears that there is an unspecified problem with loading all OS maps on your device. We tested Maidstone, Sevenoaks, and several neighbouring map sheets, and they all load correctly on our side. This suggests that one of the map files on your device may be causing the app’s background logic to fail when deciding which sheet to load. A corrupted or incomplete map file could block the loading of others. Unfortunately, this is quite a rare and specific situation.

May I kindly ask for your help so we can identify the problematic file?

Please follow these steps:

  1. Delete all OS maps from your device (You may back them up if you wish, but all purchased OS maps can be re-downloaded from the Locus Store for free.)
Open Menu > Map manager > Offline > Maps > Ordnance SurveyDelete all listed maps.
  2. Re-download two test maps
Open Menu > Locus Store, search for Maidstone and Sevenoaks, and download them.Check whether both maps load correctly, especially along their shared edges.
  3. Re-download your remaining OS maps
You can find all your purchased OS maps in Menu > User profile > Purchase History > Purchases.

I’m sorry for asking you to go through these steps, but at the moment this is the most reliable way to identify the source of the issue and ensure your maps work correctly again.

Thank you
Petr

Hi Petr, thanks for your reply. I have done as you said, deleting all OS and reintroducing them gradually. This starts okay and then starts getting the problem again. I suspected Bradford map but I can still get a problem without it: perhaps discontiguous maps trigger it but it seems mysterious to me. See load sequences below. Happily I get exactly the same outcomes on my phone and tablet so maybe you can get them too ??

Tests: loading in order:

Dorking

Maidstone

Sevenoaks

Ashdown

- all okay

---

Dorking

Maidstone

Sevenoaks

Ashdown

Bradford & Huddersfield

- Ashdown grey at north border

---

Dorking

Maidstone

Sevenoaks

Ashdown

Wolverhampton

Stratford-upon-Avon

Coventry

Birmingham

- Coventry grey at south border

Screen cuts att.

In the short term I can use Locus on next weekends LDWA100 by restricting to only the maps I need, which helps, but it remains a general problem particularly for planning.

Note: I removed other raster maps and set to not look for them also. But before I did this, Bradford sat over John Thorn map North, which at-edge reproduced semi-grey with the not available watermark. This used to show normally. I'm not too worried about this but it's information.

I hope you can reproduce the problem!

Thanks

Mark

Dear Mark,

thank you for your time and for the detailed testing. I’ll forward your steps to our development team. I believe that with your findings they will be able to reproduce the issue and improve the auto‑loading feature.

Thank you,

Petr
