Online LoPoints with automatic offline fallback

Hi awesome Locus team!

I would like to bring an older suggestion back to your attention, as I think it would be a really useful improvement to LoPoints.

I normally have LoPoints set to "Online only", because I like having the most up-to-date POI data from OSM. However, when hiking I regularly end up in areas with poor or no mobile coverage.

In that situation it would be extremely useful if Locus could automatically fall back to the offline LoPoints that are already available on the device.

I found that this has been discussed before, for example here:

https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/38438-no-offline-pois-in-4-30-for-how-long

In that discussion, Menion suggested improving "Online only" into something like:

"Automatic with online preference and offline fallback"

That sounds like the perfect solution to me:

Internet available -> use the latest online LoPoints

No internet -> automatically fall back to the available offline LoPoints

Internet available again -> switch back to online LoPoints

As far as I can tell, this has not yet been implemented for displaying LoPoints on the map. I also couldn't find a separate active idea for this functionality, and the discussion above is now archived, so I thought it might be worthwhile to bring the suggestion back as an idea of its own.

I would really, really appreciate this functionality. For hiking and other outdoor use, mobile coverage simply can't be relied upon everywhere. Having to choose beforehand between the most up-to-date LoPoints and LoPoints that remain available without a connection feels a little unnecessary when both sources are already available to Locus.

Ideally, I wouldn't have to think about this setting at all: use online data whenever possible, and quietly fall back to offline data whenever necessary.

Is this still something you are considering for the future?

Just a friendly little nudge for a feature that would make LoPoints even more useful outdoors. 🙂

Thanks for considering it, and thanks for all the work you put into Locus!

That's exactly what I'd like, too. I prefer to use the online version because that's where I have the most up-to-date information.

But if the internet goes down briefly and I'm searching at that moment, I don't get any results even though there are some available.

Then I don't know if there really aren't any or if it was just that I didn't have internet access at that moment.
